Ignore vulnerable Milan nonsense

742

The stats tell an enticing story, Milan have played thirteen competitive games since beating Celtic and won only two, but you can forget about them right now.  Celtic are good enough to take three points tomorrow but it will require a perfect match plan if they are to do so.

This fixture will hold no fears for Celtic, who have been over similar ground many times before, but they face players vastly more experienced at playing the intensity of football which will be on display tomorrow evening.  If we are to get anything from the game, we will have to subvert a team who will enjoy the majority of possession and territorial advantage, with impeccable defending and expert finishing.

We got it spectacularly wrong against Italian opposition last season, who were considerably weaker than the Spanish opponents who left Celtic Park empty handed, overwhelmingly as a consequence of diverging from the game plan which left Barcelona scrambling for a consolation goal. This is football at a remarkably unforgiving level, as Juventus let us know; you’re not in the SPFL now, Dorothy.

Did you get to speak to the CQN Girls handing out Annuals at the Superstore on Saturday?  We’ve got budget to bring them along for one last time ahead of the Milan game tomorrow.  See the video below for a glimpse of what we were up to on Saturday and thanks to everyone who has bought an Annual!

saw your post about the stranger-than-fiction possible genesis of the Tooting Popular Front earlier…have been following the story agape, agog and aghast.

    Just reading back.

Philbhoy, thx for your concern. All good my friend. Well, not quite ALL, but very minor complications which a couple of op’s will put right. First one on Dec 6th and one hopefully soon after but as I say, not anything I’m overly concerned about.

Again, thanks for your kind words.

Aye, I agree. I see our development structure as very good up to the point of fruition, then it falls off the end of a cliff.

We’ve got a great structure up to under-19 then, when the under-19s win everything, they get disbanded. No progression.

I know the Huns stymied the Scottish reserve league for their own reasons but maybe it is time to reinstate it, now that they are dead and PL is on the SFA board?

    …………………………………………………………….

no progression to the first team is the result of no opportunity for academy players. if they are not given an opportunity how do they progress?

and its worth remembering that the young celtic teams and players are more than a match for the other academy bhoys in Scotland

we need our manager to be brave and give some of the bhoys an extended run in the team. if we done that I am sure we would see far more players progressing, but to be fair lenny has certainty given youth more of a chance than most other celtic managers in recent time.

  6. Heading home from work, quick pack and ready for flight to Glasgow tomorrow. Can’t wait, feel strangely confident about this one.

Dreams are important. But too many kids blow their education on a 20:1 shot that’s all over before they’ve got hair on their chest, but regrettably after they’ve missed their education.

    Looking at your list:

Darren Fletcher is a top player. He’s 29 years old now. We missed him before the turn of the millennium.

Stephen Fletcher, now 26 years old, is coming along. Plays for Sunderland. With Ki. Who’s 2 years younger than him.

McCarthy I wanted and we (under BTM) elected to spend the money on Fortuné, Fox, and Hooiveld. Shame.

Fox and Hooiveld play in the EPL now for Southampton alongside Victor Wanyama. Fortuné was also an EPL player before he was relegated in the summer with Wigan, alongside perhaps our most talented home developed player, Shaun Maloney.

Young McCarthy was also relegated with Wigan, but got a move to Everton when his manager Martinez jumped ship in the summer.

Only Darren Fletcher (fingers crossed) has sustained a career at a top club. We got Shaun Maloney from his cohort. Fag paper margins of judgement.

We missed Stephen Fletcher, but got Aiden McGeady, same age.

We missed McCarthy by our own hand. BTM wanted to spend his money elsewhere. Them’s the breaks. We got James Forrest.

Genuinely, looking at the very short list of those who have come out of Scotland in the past 10 years to play at a high level, who are the better footballers? Snodgrass appeared late in the day. Who else? Naismith? Hutton? Berra?

Two years ago it was all about David Goodwillie. Before that, John Fleck. Now, it’s GMS or young Gauld. The distance between early promise and mature performance is as wide as the gap between dream and reality.

We can only sign a limited number of young players. Most don’t make it despite their and their clubs’ best efforts. Of those from Scotland who have made it in recent years, which ones have we really missed out on?

    Genuine question.

    TBB

  8. Quite staggering that many think we will spend serious money on a 17 year old, more chance of the fplg being the next Celtic manager.

The boy Gauld is a good prospect granted, but 1 mill plus, not a hope from our club.

We have just bought a 20 YO from Iceland, 100K, that is what we will spend on projects, unless you name is Amido that is, who will sell for a huge profit, mark my words.

Never confident on champions league games.

Excited yes but we are playing meeelan (c) Joe Jordan.

Looking forward to pre match meet and build up…

    I really love these nights..

  10. Claims of 700% increase in average attendance due to Scotland’s newest club doesn’t quite tell the story.

    1. The figures are grossly skewed as most of that increase is from the hoardes attending the Sevco Lodge.

If Sevco home gates are excluded, what do the figures say?

    2. What are the COSTS associated with hosting a Sevco visit?

Increased security and not forgetting the never reported damage repair bill.

Quoting only the 700% increase in average gate paints a rosy picture. Good news all around. All due to Sevco’s benevolence and their friendly fans.

    But, is this reality?

The MSM will have you believe Yes.

The truth lies in another dimension altogether.

The Sevconians actually view their presence in the lower league (it’s actually upper league for them given that they’ve never been in such a lofty position before) as sort of a charitable act. A financial blessing to the other wee clubs in Scotland.

Myth, legend and fairy tales. The Sevco world.

  11. TeT

Any idea how Yoker got on?

They could be challenging Sevco next year, to get into the Junior Premier League. :)

  12. TBB

You are correct, we can’t sign everyone, but , with Swindon and Ross County being over- loaded with our youth players , I think we have got it very wrong.

Who have we missed out on ?

    McCarthy

    McArthur

    Snodgrass

    Craig Gordon

    Dorrans

    Naismith

    Brown

    Fletcher

    Fletcher

I am sure there is a very good reason why we missed out on each of those, but the facts speak for themselves, and tomorrow night , we are likely to have one player starting who came through the ranks, with probably another two on the bench .

We can dress this up whatever way we want , but 9% starting is not a great success rate, and my key point is we need to find another process , as our £3m a season in youth devt isn’t paying back.

  13. Win, lose or draw tomorrow, delighted we are playing against the cream of europe.

Getting there was a dream, and getting there from now on, an even bigger money spinner for the club, take note PL, and extra 7 mill a year just for getting to the groups.

Must be worth investing in a striker and a quality middy, just to be sure, to be sure.
