Ignore vulnerable Milan nonsense

742

The stats tell an enticing story, Milan have played thirteen competitive games since beating Celtic and won only two, but you can forget about them right now.  Celtic are good enough to take three points tomorrow but it will require a perfect match plan if they are to do so.

This fixture will hold no fears for Celtic, who have been over similar ground many times before, but they face players vastly more experienced at playing the intensity of football which will be on display tomorrow evening.  If we are to get anything from the game, we will have to subvert a team who will enjoy the majority of possession and territorial advantage, with impeccable defending and expert finishing.

We got it spectacularly wrong against Italian opposition last season, who were considerably weaker than the Spanish opponents who left Celtic Park empty handed, overwhelmingly as a consequence of diverging from the game plan which left Barcelona scrambling for a consolation goal. This is football at a remarkably unforgiving level, as Juventus let us know; you’re not in the SPFL now, Dorothy.

Did you get to speak to the CQN Girls handing out Annuals at the Superstore on Saturday?  We’ve got budget to bring them along for one last time ahead of the Milan game tomorrow.  See the video below for a glimpse of what we were up to on Saturday and thanks to everyone who has bought an Annual!

Do you think Lenny would start him against Milan?

    The Battered Bunnet and others,

an interesting debate about Scottish players tonight.

Many excellent contributions pointing out how other local stars have shone brightly and perhaps not continued their development at the hoped for pace.

    Gauld may well join these.

What seems different about RG is he is a 17-year old lad playing in a central position, dictating play, in a team of talented young men.

Not a pacey wingman or full-back but the fulcrum of a team of men.

  5. Just watched Saturdays highlights. Wee McGinn body checks big Fraser as he comes for ball at their goal.

Not so in the McArthy case, James old man Willie asked PL to have a word with Strachen on the the chances that Jamie had on starting in the first team, Willie was told, (in Jan.) Strachen will not be here after this season, Willie and his son walked, and trust me, it was with heavy hearts, I was with Willie two hours after he left Celtic park. I have known the man since we where boys.

RG v Milan – no chance!

I really hope the lad makes it – our game (in Scotland) really needs a few to make it to the top (even if that means the Championship). If they make it WGS will play them.

CFC need to provide a ‘shop window’ for our signings. The hope being – that if the likes of ; VW, Ki, Hooper can make a mark in the EPL then hopefully others will be less reluctant to join us.

We get to enjoy their development/ CL input and we replenish – hopefully with the same or better – maybe a few less projects!

  10. Your head will be fecked after reading this. Interesting one is scenario 2 which would mean we could qualify for CL last 16 with 6 points. Main thing is if we win tomorrow as long as Ajax don’t beat Barca we will have European football after Christmas. Full scenarios outlined but reading that will give you a headache.

    1. If we win v Milan and Ajax draw with Barca we are guaranteed Europa League

    2. If we win v Milan and Ajax draw with Barca then we can still qualify for CL by losing at Nou Camp assuming Milan and Ajax draw in last game. Eg. all 3 teams would be on 6 points after 6 games and we would go through as we would have gained the most points in the games between the 3 tied teams.

    3. If we win v milan and Ajax draw v Barca and the Ajax-Milan game is not a draw then we would need to win in Nou Camp to qualify for CL. We would still qualify for Europa League.

    4. If we win v Milan and Ajax lose with Barca we are guaranteed Europa League.

    5. if we win v Milan and Ajax lose with Barca and then Milan and Ajax draw in last game we will need a point in Nou Camp to qualify for CL (unless we have beaten Milan by 3 goals or more in that case we could lose in nou camp and qualify CL.)

    6. If we win v Milan and Ajax lose with Barca and the Ajax-milan game is not a draw then we would need to win in Nou Camp to qualify for CL. we would still qualify for Europa League.

    7. if we win v Milan and Ajax beat Barca then we can only qualify for CL by winning in Nou Camp regardless of score in Milan-Ajax game.

    8. If we win v milan and Ajax beat Barca and milan V Ajax draw in last game we still need a draw in Nou Camp to qualify for Europa League (unless we have beaten Milan by 3 goals or more in that case we could lose in Nou camp and still qualify for Europa League.)

    9. If we win v milan and Ajax beat Barca and Ajax beat Milan in last game we will qualify for Europa League regardless of our result in Nou Camp. We cannot qualify for CL if Ajax win their next 2 games even if we win against Milan and in Nou Camp!!!

    10. If we win v Milan and Ajax beat Barca and Milan beat Ajax in last game we will be out of Europe unless we win in Nou Camp. Even a draw in Nou Camp would see us out of Europe (but as described in scenario 7 a win in Nou Camp sees us qualify for CL)

    11. If we draw v Milan then we cannot qualify for CL regardless of outcome of last game results.

    12. If we draw with Milan and Ajax win v Barca we will be out of Europe entirely.

    13. If we draw with Milan and Ajax draw with Barca we would need to win at Nou Camp to qualify AND Milan to beat Ajax in last game to qualify for Europa League.

    14. If we draw with Milan and Ajax lose to Barca and Ajax lose to Milan we would need a draw in Nou Camp to qualify for Europa League.

    15. If we draw with Milan and Ajax lose To Barca and Ajax draw with Milan we would need to win in Nou Camp to qualify for Europa League.

    16. If we draw with Milan and Ajax lose to Barca and Ajax win in Milan we will be out of Europe regardless how would do in Nou Camp.

    17. if we lose v Milan and Ajax beat Barca we are out of Europe entirely.

    18. if we lose v Milan and Ajax lose to Barca we need to win in Nou Camp and hope Ajax do not win in Milan to qualify for Europa League.

    19. if we lose to Milan and Ajax draw v Barca we need to win In Nou Camp and hope Ajax lose in Milan for us to qualify for Europa League…………………..AND BREATHE.

I’ve always thought that was the reason we lost the league that year (cheatin aside), the players knew WGS was leaving and they stopped playing for him. Hard to understand, but I believe there is a switch in players minds.

On Gauld, was there not a young Hibbee, Harris I think he was called, that came to the fore last season, I’ve not heard about him since.

  15. How did Ryan Gauld do against us in the 1-1 draw earlier this month? Was his warm up great? Jackie Macnamara knows he needs to protect him. He’s doing well just now, but let’s see if he plays for the rest of the season or not.

  17. Bhoys,

I think we should play 5 in midfield with Pukki as a lone striker.

I also think we should approach Barca about a swap deal- Bangura for Messi.

And I also think that you can’t liquidate a club’s history.

In Fleck’s case, I saw the signs. The Bucky, hash and ching appealed to an amazing talent. John was the best player to come out of this area since Danny McGrain or John Wark. They were athletes though.

The week before we beat Hibs 6-3 in the League Cup Final….

One broke one’s leg and ankle… end of story but, even with broken bones etc. etc.

  23. Immediately after the victory over Aberdeen on Saturday I came into CQN and praised the contribution of Derk Boerrigter and said his introduction had completely changed Celtic’s momentum. I finished my comment by saying I hope he starts against Milan.

From what I am reading it would appear that Neil Lennon agrees. Derk has the ability to cause havoc in the Milan defence and after Saturday, thoroughly deserves his chance.

I was pessimistic going into the game at the Amsterdam ArenA, but this time I expect 3 points from the game against the Italians. We need fear nobody at home, and Milan are no Barcelona.

    1-0 will do for me.
