Ill-equipped strikers, King ramblings and a league without Celtic

545

A week into preseason Celtic play their first 90 minutes of the campaign tomorrow afternoon away to Linz in Austria. It will be great to see the team play (CelticTV) but tomorrow is all about getting the legs moving without injury. Thereafter expectations will ramp up quickly.

‘News’ that Nadir Ciftci has been told he can find a new club will have shocked you, I know. You and I had many opportunities to watch Nadir at Dundee United, while Ronny Deila considered his purchase. The player’s languid interpretation of the game made him a surprising signing at the time.

Maybe Ronny knows something we don’t? Was the hope. He didn’t. It was a rank bad signing, one of several strikers acquired during Ronny’s tenure who didn’t look like Celtic players on paper and looked even less equipped in hoops.

Ronny, of course, did try to sign Moussa Dembele in January 2016, so it would be wrong to conclude he had a blind spot for strikers, but you will struggle to name some who ‘passed through Parkhead’s gates’ in recent seasons.

I only caught up with Dave King’s ramblings yesterday evening. He fancies Newco to reach 10-in-a-row before Celtic do so. They stand a far better chance if we leave Scottish football.  Remember when Charles Green promised Newco would never compete in the Scottish Premier League, knowing fine well the league were committed to an imminent rebrand?  Not laughing so much now, are you?

Celtic are always looking at this, always working on one or other strategy.

I’ve sat in the Rangers end at Ibrox twice. Once in 82 when they were playing Aberdeen and my mate and I were on instruction from the girls not to get pished.

I had an exam that morning,so the only way to kill time was to go to the game and hope Aberdeen got beat.

    Aye…

Right in front of us,clear as day,Paterson the heifer centre half stuck out an arm-guess who shouted “Penalty, ref!”

Next one was due to a misunderstanding about who was meant to get the tickets for me,aforementioned mate and my Dad. A quick few phone calls,we got them via Cross Keys bus in Stevenston.

On condition we travelled on the bus!

We got beat 3-0 and we got off at Barrhead on the way back, had enough.

Good friends, aye, but ffs that was torture. Gave us seats right behind the goals anaw, the sods..

I think the point the GB and CT were making was not that Celtic hadn’t consulted them, but that they hadn’t consulted with any fans’ representative groups before deciding not to take tickets.

It does seem a bit high handed and patronising.

  6. Have to say,I think BR is living in a wee cocoon regards NI.This about sport uniting people, and Belfast not being the same City.Maybe I am imagining the bonfire piles with efigies wearing Celtic strips hanging from them. The sheer naked hatred for another religion that will be on display at Drumcree once again this year, and all across the Catholic enclaves.

Might be a good idea for Brendan to go onto Munter Media for an hour or two,or FF,to see the joyful coming together they envisage.

I am with TD on this one.Maybe the fans from The Falls will be fine, but the road from Larne to Belfast will be fraught with danger. One Celtic fan injured,or worse is a price too high for such a nonentity of a game.

  7. Hello team, a wee aside for emdy interested…

I’m working in Qatar again for the moment. I haven’t been there for a while as I’ve been otherwise engaged in Kazakhstan, Dubai and Turkey up until 3-4 months ago, but I’ve been here again since after a break from here of a couple of years-ish.

Anyway, there’s quite a bit going on here at the moment with fall-outs between arab neighbours as everybody knows I’m sure, but it has a few interesting side issues. The KSA border, which is the only land border that Qatar has, is closed for now and has been for a few weeks. Neither KSA nor UAE is allowing exports to Qatar via land, sea or air, even if it’s just goods transiting through there to here, and it’s leading to some interesting situations. There’s also a ban in effect that precludes those countries exporting their own produce directly to here.

As a linked in aside to that, Qatar is still friendly with Turkey who sent troops here a couple of weeks ago, there’s a separate history to that also, but I mention it just as part of the next thing…

I didn’t notice much in the way of shortages in the shops here up until a couple of days ago, because although the selection of produce to what you normally see here has been available in the shops, the last thing I expected to see was Saudi produce, because what importers have been doing here is sourcing foodstuffs and other commodities from other locations than they normally do. Hence the predominance of Turkish goods on the shelves here, right next to Saudi produce. I’m thinking that Turkey has been re-routing whatever they import from KSA to here along with whatever they are sending directly too.

Pretty weird over here so it is, funny kind of atmosphere too. Anyway, I’m not making any big point, just thought I’d share in case anyone has an interest.

    Hail Hail,

    KevinBhoy.
