Illusive focus should return to Celtic

287

Highlights from Easter Road on Saturday suggest Hibs are very much in the hunt for second place.  Aberdeen have the experience to finish Best of the Rest, but it is disappointing performances like that against Hibs which have given Celtic carte blanche to experiment with the squad so regularly in the league this season.

While Brendan Rodgers will only have thoughts for Zenit right now, Derek McInnes will be planning how to deploy against Celtic on Sunday.  The Aberdeen manager has tried and failed many times to get the better of Celtic in recent seasons, which is not the inhibitor it might seem to be.  He knows what does not work and what not to try.  This week’s discussion matter at Pittodrie will be whether Aberdeen can do what half the teams in the league have already done and take points from Celtic.

As far as the Champions are concerned, stacking big games back-to-back will bring out the best in them.  An away game at St Petersburg before heading marginally south to Aberdeen will bring a focus to the club which has been elusive recently.

    —————————

obert Pires believes the Europa League final will be between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid as long as both teams avoid Celtic in the competition.

The retired midfielder, who won the World Cup with France in 1998, named the Gunners and Atletico Madrid as his favourites to win the tournament but warned them about Celtic.

“Atletico and Arsenal are the favourites, for me this is the final in Lyon,” said Pires, as quoted by The Sun.

“They both have a lot of experience, especially in the Champions League.

“They just need to avoid each other and Celtic if they want to face each other in the final.”

The Bhoys are set to play Zenit St Petersburg in the second leg of their Europa League tie on Thursday, and go into the game 1-0 up on aggregate.

Callum McGregor scored the only game of the goal to secure Celtic a memorable 1-0 victory over the Russian giants last Thursday at Celtic Park.

Pires continued praising the Hoops and revealed that he thought the “amazing” atmosphere at Celtic Park made the Hoops difficult to beat in the Europa League this season.

“I love Celtic, it is not easy for any team, especially in Celtic Park, the atmosphere is amazing,” stated the 44-year-old.

“When you are a player, inside, playing against Celtic, it is a great atmosphere, it is still very close to the pitch, maybe only Liverpool has a similar atmosphere.”

“That’s why it is very difficult to win in Celtic Park.”

    OPINION

Pires may have only played at Celtic Park once he was retired, in Stiliyan Petrov’s charity mach in 2013, but Arsenal and Atletico Madrid should take notice of his advice. The Bhoys weren’t expected to beat Zenit at Celtic Park, but that’s exactly what they did. Brendan Rodgers’ side may face a difficult task getting a result in Russia but with them having a 1-0 lead from their first meeting, then they’ve given themselves a good chance. Rodgers knows that his performance as Hoops boss will be judged on how his side perform in the Europa League in the second half of the season, and will no doubt have a plan for the game in Russia.

If he is fit, I am sure Brendan will go with Mikel. I don`t think he(ML) is the player he was but is still probably the safer choice this evening.

Tonight is a big game for the hoops and unfortunately I am not to confident our away record over the years has been very poor I cling on to the fact that no Russian team has beaten us over two legs.However.with the money Zenit have spent on players they will be a very different team to the one we beat at Parkhead I will watch the match and hope for the best. I went to see the Clapton biopic ‘A Life In 12 bars’ recently. Some great unseen, by me at least, musical footage in the film, including when he was with Mayall, and a stunner when he was sitting in on an Aretha Franklin session, and was asked to play.

The childhood/ early adulthood family experiences he had, no wonder that white boy could play the blues. At one point he says he wished he had just stayed with the Bluesbreakers.

Personally, glad he didn’t, being a Cream fan.

  21. Zenits Stadium is reportedly the most expensive in the world costing one billion pounds.Add to that the cost of their squad and their Trillion pound backers Gazprom you begin to realise the monumental size of the task we face tonight. Its like one David versus eleven Goliath’s.

If we pull this off tonight we will have a hard job hanging on to BR for next season. Mancini will get the chop and take the Italy job. Zenit will be looking for a replacement, they wont look far.

Defeat might not be all bad.
