Impact of new signings already evident

153

The impact of our new signings is already evident.  Kieran Tierney did what Kieran Tierney does: knocked the ball beyond his defender, beat him in the sprint and threw in a dangerous cross.  Benjamin Nygren found space inside the box and made no mistake when he met Kieran’s cross.

Benji turned provider for Reo Hatate to double the lead midway through the second half as Celtic eased to the win with no sign of the trouble they had last time against Aberdeen.

Despite the control they had in the game, Celtic still looked rusty.  Daizen Maeda was unusually quiet, then he was oh-so-usually wasteful when clean through with only the keeper to beat.

Whatever the plan is to get the ball to Adam Idah, it is clearly not working.  The big striker cannot be singled out for blame on this point.  This term has started with Brendan Rodgers benching two of last summer’s expensive signings, the manager will be reluctant to sit Adam alongside Auston Trusty and Arne Engels.

Declining the opportunity to postpone our next league fixture (home to Livingston) now looks like a good call.  We have the incentive to put clear blue water between us and others.  The season may only be two games old, but it already has the juices flowing.

  1. Very composed performance yesterday, but Aberdeen is a poor side, so lets not get too carried away.

Some great showings as well from CCV, Kt Reo and Nygren , promising.

My main concern though is we must hold on to Reo and Daizen, because the club will go the same way as when Dembele and Eduard left, and that is why BR departed, typical.

Why does the club not reward Brendan for the great work he has done, offer the guy a new contract please.

Make no mistake, BR is a real top manager

    Pretty fair summation Paul.

    Nygren: 1 goal, 1 assist

Tierney: 1 assist out of nothing. Defensive discipline (for which he gets almost zero credit) is excellent.

Auston not selected ahead of Liam. Wouldn’t be my call but hey ho.

I expect Auston to be utilised copiously this season.

Arne situation is even easier to figure out.

Nygren joined Celtic with two weeks further preseason under his belt. He is sharp and being used early as a result.

Arne is young and here for years. He’ll feature heavily for us in Europe.

Adam’s situation is the easiest to fathom.

We’re two wingers light, so Daizen is deployed wide.

    Ergo, Adam has to start.

  6. I hope I am not reading too much into BR comments at the weekend…when he said he was more concerned about getting players IN than out he said there have been no movements for Rio and that ?

But obviously he didn’t say anything about Maeda who I think is THE most important forward we have either as a central striker or a winger

All this talk about how much we spent on Engels, Trusty etc but the FACT is we made a PROFIT on our transfer dealings last season and again this year so they cost us NOTHING thanks to O’Riley & Kuhn.

Surely if the club sells Maeda it will be the final nail in the coffin for BR even if we do bring in a replacement..the words that Yamada is faster than Maeda will be put to the test.

BR called it right the team will improve as AJ – KT – CCV missed most of pre-season, Bernardo ditto, Maeda was also late in joining up I think. Sharpness will come with more game time.

Unlike some I don’t feel we have the right balance in midfield yet, CalMac is never a defensive minded player for me. Why don’t we revisit Diawara (19) who Lyon apparently quoted us £9m for last year, put him out on loan and now are hugely impacted financially – Surely even Nicholson could secure a bargain.

Panic on signings, Trusty & Engels joined on 30th Aug last year so we should be ahead of schedule is we can add a couple of quality players in the next few days. This is the time to make a statement Celtic, show our intent loud & clear….2-3 new signings and a new contract do Maeda – It might wellbe BR last season with us so go out with a bang !

  7. I think the criticism of Engels is a bit over the top, made a good contribution last season, shows a good attitude and looks well liked within the group, I’ve said before to give him a dozen games in his best position of right midfield, to give him more confidence.

  8. I always roll my eyes when I read about ‘Rodgers sending messages to the board’ with his team sheets and substitutions. He has to be one of the most second guessed managers in the game right now.

Brendan wants to win games and he will play what he believes is his best side in order to get results. Brendan will continue to start Idah because Idah is the best striker at the club right now. He will not hesitate to make the call if that situation changes – as he already has demonstrated with Engels and Nygren.

    True story, honestly.

My wife’s uncle Lou made his fortune as a young man having moved from Lebanon to Livonia, Michigan, an affluent suburb of Detroit. By their later years he and his brother were both millionaires and could’ve eaten in the finest restaurants without fear of the final bill. Instead for many years they competed with each other to identify the cheapest spot for their weekly lunch date. Lou was jubilant one day when he had gazumped his brother with a $5 po’ boy (the famous poor boy’s sandwich from New Orleans food culture). To Uncle Lou and his brother the challenge was in minimising cost even though they didn’t have to. A crap po’ boy brought infintely more joy than a decent lunch they could easily afford.

I see the same pathology in the Celtic Board. They could afford the decent lunch but prefer the crap po’ boy. It’s the joy the cheap brings that’s the whole point. So this notion that they’ll spend once we have enough cash-in-bank is a myth. Their outlook is unchanging irrespective of their financial context – if we have £10 or £100M in the bank it’s the same story.

Rodgers would prefer the quality 3 course lunch but he can’t prise the Board away from the dozen po’ boys. It’s why he’s worried the team will fade away from malnutrition and plans not to be here to see it. Don’t blame him.

Lennon Miller is a terrific young footballer with a fine career in front of him. I wish him well. It’s good to see young Scottish players emerge. But I’m not bovvered at all that he’s not signing for Celtic. We need a CalMac apprentice and he’s not it.

Elsewhere, thought the McGowan article posted by BSR is uncomfortably close to the bone.

  14. Maeda was at his best after Kyogo left when he moved inside and couldn’t stop scoring. He was helped, of course, by having Jota and Kuhn playing alongside him.

He is a better CF than Idah, Of that there can be little doubt. BR put him there in preferente to Idah and had Jota out left.

Without Jota, Who is a better winger than Maeda, BR once again prefers him out wide which would be great if we had a clinical CF knocking in the goals.

At the moment, we have no Kuhn or Jota and Tillio and Yang are seen as surplus to requirements. So there is no chance of Maeda been given the CF role. And with his three most recent chances to score when through one on one being squandered, he is not putting up a great counter arguement.

Regarding his dip in form, a couple of observations:

    1. I believe it was reported in Japan in the summer that he said he wanted to play through the middle more to give him the best preparation for the World Cup next summer. So signing a new contract may hinge on that.

    2. His role has changed with the replacement of GT with KT. Looks to me like he is not needed or expected to track back so much as KT is more likely to be where he is supposed to be.

Like everyone else, I hope he stays. Our MVP last season by a country mile.

  15. We are slow to sign players, that’s true and it’s frustrating, but BR’s departure, when it comes, will be as much to do with his success and the offers that flow from it as it will be to do with the ambition of the club. I don’t doubt for a minute he wants to return to the PL fairly soon. Fair enough. But we should not beat ourselves up about that. If e.g. a side like West Ham or Everton, come calling – not impossible – I’d imagine he’d be off. I refuse to blame the Board or Brendan or anyone else for the unpleasant facts of football life.

If the majority of the present day Timdom reflect your view, and it looks liked they do, then when the Huns FC steal Hundreds of £millions from HMRC and use it to cheat Celtic, and its supporters, and the Celtic PLC say that it is none of our business, and get away with saying that, then Timdom died in 2012 along with the Hun FC, but not Huns fans or Hunnism.

What we have seen since 2012 is:

Aberdeen fans holding up a banner inside Parkhead after the PLC sh#t it with their “We’re Surpised” response to the LNS whitewashing of Hun crimes and stolen trophy stripping, the banner saying:

“CELTIC FC YOUR SILENCE IS DEAFENING.”

The Huns won promotion in 2016 and Celtic PLC put Rangers 2012 £49 prices onto [new club] Sevco tickets which Celtic fans bought and sang Rangers are dead, just after cementing the same club lie, through the purchase of these £49 tickets, [which KEVJUNGLE is the only Tim in Timdom to mention this PLC cheating of Celtic fans] I was waiting for “Only An Excuse” doing a sketch on it with Celtic fans wearing simple Simon t-Shirts singing “Your not Rangers Anymore” how apt that would have been, but that would have revealed the big cover up then wouldn’t it.

Our fans, The Green Brigade, get kettled whilst our so called other fans stand filming it on their phones, then the cops kneel on Celtic fans necks outside Fir Park and so called other fans walk past filming it on their phones.

Celtic fans since 2012 have proved Thatcher correct when she said “THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SOCIETY” and seating football stadiums cut Societies balls off, unless you are a Hun fighting off planted creeps from foreign countries attacking wee lassies in Ballymena, the next week Irish Republicans from the 6 counties were out on the streets pleading for more creeps to be brought in. lol

The Huns haven’t changed in Scotland, or the 6 counties, whereas Tims in the all seated Thatcherite era have become unrecognisable, to the pre all seated, Jungle Rebels era, falling for the woke krankie grifter, grassing up the resistance to the krankie covid vaccine genocide, and keeping schtum as the Green Brigade were banned for protesting against the Palestine genocide.

Celtic fans, manager, captain, or any other player, said fk all as the GB were banned, and the team lost 7 points straight away, then sneakily brought the GB back in again as, £60,000+ per week Tory Rodgers couldn’t get a tune out of his hugely expensive playing squad without the anti Parkhead library GB.

Then Tims said FK all as the PLC tried to since day one, throw the CBC abuse victims under the bus, treating them like lepers, falling for the CBC abuse case reborn scam after wee hero Fergus said he’d dealt with this? Well did he really?

Why did these new CBC abuse cases emerge as the horrible krankie mob got control of the Scottish Parliament?

Did Celtic PLC and their lawyers ask for irrefutable video evidence of these “new” crimes? If not, why not?

Did Celtic PLC fall for a he said-she, said scam?

Jeez, just look at the lies that the evil krankie regime told about, Alex Salmond, to remove any competition out of the all parties working for the lobby groups, fake Scottish Parliament.

Rigging election, after election, to keep Salmond and of course, George Galloway, out of the fake Holyrood shithouse covered in masonic H & W crane images like the builders, stone masons etc, and GG who’s truth bombs would have reduced the fake Parliament to a pile of burning ashes.

How will we ever know the real truth if Celtic fans don’t vote for WPB and ALBA Parties in next years Scottish election?

Only these parties will [Open the books] were you can click online at any minute of the day and see where all of Scottish Parliament and Government’s money has gone to, like how many genocides are they really supporting, whilst pouring austerity onto innocent Scottish people, and saying a big bad Tory fae London did it and ran away?!

Who would be stupid enough to trust a Tim, who 2twice plunged their knives into Jeremy Corbyn’s back, going along with the Krankie/Greens/Lab/Lib/Tory/etc smear campaign calling Corbyn an anti semite?

Welcome to the who would trust a Tim era.

Does that mean Celtic are going to keep paying Maeda the same money for another couple of years?

Or am I thinking too logically there?

  20. According to website we currently have 27 players plus 4 on loan in the 1st team squad. We have a further 13 plus 3 on loan in B Squad. We also have 20 u18 Academy players.

How many players do we need? World cup and Europa cup tournaments limited teams to 23 players. I think UEFA limit players list for Champions League.

Now I know we appear to be light in wingers partly due to Jota long term injured but just how many do we need. Probably 2 with 1 permanent and 1 on loan.

This begs the question of how many players we sign each window. there are 2 windows per year so what is a good number to bring in each year. 31 say a third every year. Say10 players on average per year. We have signed 7 so far in this window. Surely we cannot be signing many more. Other than the 2 wingers of course.

During the close season Media including Bloggers have little to report and have only transfer stories real or imagined to fill their columns. The hype excites supporters and produces illogical expectations. We now have raging supporters calling for boycotts and all sorts of shit. Its illogical and stupid.

I am sure the club will bring in the wingers and 1 or 2 will leave

  21. A striker who needs competition to perform well. That does not speak well to his professionalism. On Sportsound yesterday, Pat Bonnar said he had personally told Idah to up his training to obtain peak sharpness. Again, not a good look.

  22. McGowan saying he thinks Celtic will bring in FOUR players…so by that rational we will release 4 x players Tillio – Welsh – Yang & ?????? I absolutely hope it is not Maeda but the signs are not promising, we bring in a player who is “faster” rumours of an additional Japanese players..

Surely the board can’t think we will stand it forever..We are +£66M in the last 8 years of transfer dealings

Yet the manager has a Budget to spend which hasn’t been touched for years. Speculate to accumulate, we SHOULD be a bigger force in Europe than Bruges – Ajax – Porto etc but we lack true visionaries

Sadly it’s about being old and using tech I am afraid. I have similar issues in business etc on a daily basis.

  26. PLB

It’s not about anyone settling for the cheap sandwich.

It’s about the manager identifying and suggesting which caviar or even decent steak or quality mushroom wellington that will actually want to be here.

The risk is if we don’t actually have options re £20m signings interested in coming now then in 3 weeks those options left may well not be representative of value as they will be ‘what’s left’.

The money is there. Hard for a manager to sell a player the dream in year 3 of his fixed term.

Not saying it is anyone’s fault but it is where we are. Weirdly almost easier for a team with upside like the other lot who are at the start of yet another project and clearly have potential to grow vs one with potential to fall from a positon of unrelenting dominance.

It is tough to just pick up those players we might all think could enhance the team. Tough for the manager to identify and entice them. Tough for everyone involved to get it over the line. Even though the money is there.

Sadly wrong choices are gifts we will keep on paying for after BR leaves.

Massive respect and credit to the family and all involved with the funeral service for John Fallon today at St Joseph’s Blantyre. Really lovely respectful and appropriate for a great man of faith and a great Celtic man. What a fitting turnout also.
