Imperious Celic win with gears to spare

244

Despite a good result at Easter Road, Celtic were unable to put any distance between themselves and nearest challengers, Aberdeen, who matched their two-goal win at home to St Mirren.

It took less than three minutes for Nicolas Kuhn to open the scoring against Hibernian with a peach of a goal.  Kyogo’s shot was spilled by Bursik in the Hibs goal, James Forrest was first to react and smashed the ball low across the face of goal.  The ever-alert Kuhn was on his toes and slid the ball into the empty net at the far post.

Callum McGregor doubled the advantage with what will surely be goal of the month in 19 minutes with a thunderous shot from 26 yards.  The main surprise by halftime was that Celtic’s advantage was not greater.  Hibs only consolation was that they were facing Celtic, not Dundee.

The second half was largely a different story.  Poor distribution by both central defenders, and on one occasion by Kasper Schmeichel, and a drop-off in movement in the middle of the park, allowed Hibs some time on the ball inside the Celtic half.  They threatened and (if they were any better) could have narrowed the gap, but Celtic always had a few gears to move up.

It is early days but the three-in-a-row champions are already looking imperious.

  1. Monday so soon.

Yet to conceded a goal and the ghost goalie has only had to work with his feet.

    HH!

  2. I feel a few early this week new signings including our young Finnish keeper should be starting on Sunday.

Wrap Kyogo upcin cotton wool until a couple of weeks also is a must.

Yes I was on the windup. But your point still stands, what is happening here, no communication on it since those drawings were shared. I get that a project like that is complicated and not only involves contractors to build it but also a company to run the hotel. We’ve also had Brexit etc. in the intervening years but still no update or even a communication which states, ‘no plans to progress this in the short/medium term’. I assume planning permission has/will run out soon?

I agree with you regarding Hatate. Man of the Match last week and poor yesterday. Looked knackered just before he was subbed. Although he had a long injury last season, he was very poor in the matches beforehand. I think he wanted the move to Brighton. I’d accept a decent offer for him too.

Totally agree. Likewise, it is a shame that the main stand is has not been rebuilt if not totally upgraded, as Celtic Park could then host more Uefa Finals etc. I am just being a bit too much of a dreamer, and I take the point about the impact of reduced capacity etc.

  6. Nice and fresh in Ireland southwest this morning after 4 hours of thunder and lightning last night.

Our season is off to a flying start with the Bhoys playing beautiful football and then controlling the games.

The centre back pairing of CV and Scales is working a treat, with Scales dictating forward play as much as the midfielders do. Thankfully Brendan Rodgers grasp of the game is superior to those fans who like to pick on an individual and highlight any tiny incidence whilst ignoring the incisive tackles and defence splitting passes. Yes indeed, I tend to concur with our successful managers conclusions re. Liam Scales.

Likewise, James Forrest is not, nor ever has been, invisible.

Yep re Reo… so much natural talent, sporadically marred by mercurial performances: If he really wants to graduate to the EPL or La Liga he’d do well to up his consistency in the Hoops first.

    MadraRua on 12th August 2024 12:31 pm

I’m a Scalesy fan anaw – and his continual foraging forward requires huge reserves of stamina; he and Greg T may not be the team’s fancy Dans but Geez they (and Callum) put in some shift yesterday. As did Matty O (whose book Reo could take a leaf out of).

    HH

  8. Reo had one great game v Killie and then a poor 2nd half but Brendan did not sub him until the 75th minute mark. I for his defects are being exaggerated a bit.

As for getting him transferred- that would likely be leaving us with only an ageing Callum from our established midfield.

I think we should aim to lose no more than 1 from any department, full back, centre back, midfielder or Striker. We might be able to cope with 2 wingers leaving as Brendan has accumulated Mullyins of them or they’ve been foisted on him.

Another fun filled week in the CQN public comments echo chamber.

Who would have predicted a ‘Kyogo shoulder pop’? or more perceived off the radar, Celtic parsimony, and a continuing myth that there are no ‘quality’ volunteers for Brendan Rodgers . We cross the same junction where we left the league cup this time last season, and the extent of weaker than last, is highly debatable at best. BR without question is upholding his coaching end of the bargain and ‘a head of recruitment’ continues to sell, players that reach a valuation price, whilst Matt O’Riley our biggest asset, gets closer to his.

Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo were both supposed to be in the USA with us, but only the Portuguese midfielder made it to the bench in Edinburgh, two games in. The game itself was a widely predicted no contest, that was gift wrapped early doors for the reduced number travelling Celtic support. The second half was crying out for a Celtic centre forward to endorse the scoreline and our superiority. Shot shy? Kuhn, had an otherwise great game but flinches on pulling the trigger. Maeda qualifies as a striker for Japan at the expense Kyogo, ( the other way round at Celtic ) only because he’s a willing horse, and all there is. Mikey Johnston has toiled as a winger, and was a fill in ‘centre’ in a game at IBrokes too long ago, to mention.

As if rammed with excuses the Bernardo and Idah saga’s prevent progress, the weaker than last year argument loses ground, because Celtic are infinitely better and fitter to watch, so far, with the same or similar team to last year. The Idah proposed signing is a symptom of a previous failed regime ( we hope ) instead of negotiating with Norwich or Benfica , we should be strengthening the squad elsewhere, and a manager having to sit down with directors to tell them what is needed, is not a good sign.

When we do sign Adam Idah this week or next, the dry bedders and ‘it’ll be fines ‘ may rejoice and say ‘great window’, when the valuation of Matt O’Riley is eventually met, the rest will see others lack of vision. Sorry we were so poor for all those years, now we’re sorry for being so rich, you could only get it in the Celtic Story.

  10. “Imperious”?

Yes, they do and so they should. We’ve got a bank balance that could buy every other club in Scotland combined.

We’ve also got a settled side as we’ve done very little to change it or improve upon it thus far.

Realistically, we will bring in probably one or two first xi players and maybe one or two squad players and we will lose our POTY. It won’t be enough for anything other than continued embarrassment in Europe.

Brendan took the job, he will increase his wealth and will have an excuse for failure in Europe. Blame the board. It would be good to see if a manager showed integrity and resigned when he wasn’t given what he expected in the market.

Liam Scales is a good pro, similar to a Stephen Mcmanus and is a back up (or squad player if being kind). To think we can’t improve on him is utter nonsense.

A step up in quality would make us so much stronger for the CL. Taylor is mote than good enough for the Spfl and is an intelligent player but the opposition know his weakness.

Offensively we lack two game changers. A left sided or number 10 of a higher standard than we are used to would.be really positive.

    Another striker has become urgent.

The Hibs Cup game would have been sold out within an hour had we strengthened the squad from last season.

Spend the money on a new Main stand if we are only going to sit on it. Or get the owners to sell up and let somebody else have a shot.

  11. SFTB re Reo…

No doubt his swivelling and pass-spraying qualities but his inconsistency is to my eyes, em, pretty consistent.

Last year – after BR hooked him and called him out for being ‘sloppy – I started closely watching Reo to see how much influence he was having in games (albeit on telly from downunder). To me he gets dispossessed often, gets railroaded by bigger players – esp Huns – which compounds the errors in his overall play.

I said before he’s a bit Ntcham-like in having lovely feet and movement, but patchy application.

In my prev post, I said it’d be ideal to keep Matty for the ECL and play him w Calum and Bernardo who’s quite suited to Euro ties IMO. I can see Holm coming good too. In short, if we have to see a middy, I’d rather sacrifice Reo than Matt.

If I had to sacrifice a defender it’d be Welshy, not Maik or Lagers. Forwards, it’d be Yang and Mikey.

All academic blether, as I’d stuff the team proper if I ever got anywhere near akshul selection.

  12. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

We have been excellent albeit Hibs and Kilmarnock have been spanked in their other games too and don’t have a goal let alone a point between them.

Our bench is bare and anyone who thought Lawwell’s Babes from last summer’s window would come good after a year of Brendan’s coaching should pay attention to his selection decisions. Clue -they’re largely mince. Expensive mince at that.

So I for one applaud Nicholson and Lawwell Sr for keeping their short hands in their long pockets. They know they’re not competent to recruit new players, so best to keep it in the bank and pay themselves fat bonuses instead,

Look forward to celebrating that cash-in-bank statement in September after the Frimpong, Mikey J, Lawal and of course O’Riley money comes rolling in. Along with the money for being Champions League punchbags too.

Maybe we’ll even get our ‘free’ cup game back. As if!

  13. CCV Needs to clear his lines ,few times yesterday he was hesitant and nearly let Hibs score ,he to needs competition,

  14. Regarding the main stand ,in old photos I noticed there wasn’t any girders at each end ,in fact it looked better than the present stand ,maybe they should go back to that design I imagine it wouldn’t cost a lot ,

  15. theBHOYfromU.N.C.L.E on

So the huns have ditched ‘simply the best’ whilst at Hampden for ‘we shall not be moved’…

  16. I think our defenders, get a bit caught up in playing out from the back all the time, sometimes we just need to clear our lines, and launch it

  17. gossip.

    ———-

Liverpool are open to loaning out Ben Doak with the option of a permanent sale next summer should the offer be attractive enough and would be open to an outright sale in the current transfer window should the right offer come in for the 18-year-old Scotland Under-21 winger. (Daveockop)

  18. saint stivs

Ok Doaky choose his own path

It’s not working out at Liverpool

Good luck to him wherever he ends up

  19. SFTB,

CCV has not yet reached his pre injury level and is depending on his co defenders for support. Scales has been the dominant CH so far this season and he is only going to get better.

Unfortunately, he has inherited the Tommy Callaghan mantle, possibly delivered by the offspring of TC’s abusers.

In Tommy’s case, it drove him to request a transfer, which fortunately Jock refused.

“Liverpool linked with O’Riley last week, £20 million plus Beck and Doak……”

Add in a 1 year loan back of Matt O’Reilly and I would reluctantly accept that.

Beck looked a decent option at LB, though I am also a fan of Taylor.

  23. Unless we do some business soon, we’re one thug away from having no recognised centre forward.

Plenty of willing thugs and plenty of compliant MIBS.

And, even the thought of all that is an absolute disgrace!

  24. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Quadbhoy from previous thread – cheers.

Yes the Hibs fans had a go at Mikey for coming back onto the pitch … but they also jeered after he tried immediately to get up while wobbly then sat back down.

And yes – coming back onto the pitch and promptly sitting down is a common time wasting tactic which I think should be punished (see my previous comments)

That doesn’t apply to yesterday IMHO.

Earlier in the game Kuhn half challenged a defender in the box who went down holding his coupon.

    Walsh immediately stopped play.

Replay (available to the VAR) CLEARLY showed Kuhn was nowhere near his head.

Guy was at it. He abused the ref’s concerns for his safety.

I believe this is coached behaviour.

    My suggested solution?

Send him off for 90 seconds or 2 minutes after game restarts.

It’ll take a while but once even the dumbest coaches realise their cheating won’t be rewarded they’ll change their ways.

By contrast I found the Mikey incident quite disturbing.

The replay showed a significant impact to the head.

The VAR checked it for a penalty.

Why couldn’t the VAR have said

“Nick. No pen … but the guy took a bang. Give him time”.

To the observation that Mikey came back on then went down again I would enquire …

“Who sent him off the field after treatment and why?”

    Hmm.
