Imperious Celic win with gears to spare

244

Despite a good result at Easter Road, Celtic were unable to put any distance between themselves and nearest challengers, Aberdeen, who matched their two-goal win at home to St Mirren.

It took less than three minutes for Nicolas Kuhn to open the scoring against Hibernian with a peach of a goal.  Kyogo’s shot was spilled by Bursik in the Hibs goal, James Forrest was first to react and smashed the ball low across the face of goal.  The ever-alert Kuhn was on his toes and slid the ball into the empty net at the far post.

Callum McGregor doubled the advantage with what will surely be goal of the month in 19 minutes with a thunderous shot from 26 yards.  The main surprise by halftime was that Celtic’s advantage was not greater.  Hibs only consolation was that they were facing Celtic, not Dundee.

The second half was largely a different story.  Poor distribution by both central defenders, and on one occasion by Kasper Schmeichel, and a drop-off in movement in the middle of the park, allowed Hibs some time on the ball inside the Celtic half.  They threatened and (if they were any better) could have narrowed the gap, but Celtic always had a few gears to move up.

It is early days but the three-in-a-row champions are already looking imperious.

  1. Celtic are treating punters like mugs, have all sorts of worries and concerns about spending money and increasing players wages, but 66% increase for board members was just dandy last season. No worries about increasing my season ticket season on season either.

Regardless of how well the team are doing there are large gaps in capable leftba k, centreback and centre forward areas with question marks o er the wide areas and a gaping hole if/when o’reily goes.

Scales is a reasonable defending and does have scope to improve but his back of pace and continual poor and so passing, decision making is still a worry. Also if he or ccv are out we are looking at 3 players who for one reason or another are not at it.

” `I was talking to a well connected Sevco fan,who was due a ticket for CP, seems the police have said if we need to go to Hampden for a League game, they don’t want Celtic fans there,so sounds like the huns back at Ibrox in September is nonsense.`

Celtic are not scheduled to go to Ibrox until 2nd January.”

I took Bada`s post to mean that Ibrox would STILL not be available by January 2nd !!

“To the observation that Mikey came back on then went down again I would enquire …

“Who sent him off the field after treatment and why?”

    Hmm.”

Good question. I didn’t notice him leave the field / re-enter but if the ref asked him to leave the field and he came back on without the ref’s say so then that is a booking regardless. If he became dizzy after legally coming back on then anyone having seen the replay or the blood / swelling should know better; fans often wont see this though.

I do recall Hibs getting a FK when a defender faked an injury though – I’d support a sin bin for fakery around that as it is annoying as f@@k and often just abused to ease pressure being fairly applied by an attacking team – something you can’t accuse MJ of doing given we were attacking. I did initially think he was milking it a little to give VAR time to review for a penalty though as it did look a good shout, as did the one where Khun was fouled by two CBs after CalMac hit the post – though there is a hint of offside it looked on to me.

I know we didn’t score as many goals as we deserved to yesterday, but some of the the fitba was a joy to watch. Calmac was brilliant and the space he always creates to get on the ball is something all young aspiring center mids should look at. I watched the Dundee mini Huns game and I have always liked the way that Luke McCowan plays. Would I take a punt on him?, tough one as I remember watching Scott Allan at Hibs and really glad we beat the Huns to him signing but it didnt work out for him for some reason. I was getting a wee bit frustrated with some of Scalesy’s passes as a few were hospital balls, but I think Hibs did a much better job second half, closing down the space for our mids. The way we are playing right now is night and day compared to the start of last season. LOng may it continue. Hope everyone is having a wonderful day wherever you are.

Just started my 25th first day of School last week…as a teacher, wisnae held back or anything, good St Aidan’s high school edumacation back in the day. A few more years to go before I can retire and let my kids look after me then….yeah right!!!!

Liverpool linked with O’Riley last week, £20 million plus Beck and Doak……

I’d take Beck and ask the Scousers to up the fee , as young Doak will not be allowed back on the premises… setting a precedent and all that ….

  6. Am I right then, Brendan was talking for yonks about getting in Quality. Kasper, great stuff, Bernardo and possibly Idah.

Because I am hard of thinking, just how does that add quality from last year exactly, doesnt, does it.

  7. I think paul67 said it – KS ‘s passing could make a big difference to us in european games –

To be honest, I’m not expecting much despite the fact we’ve played amazing football in the last couple of seasons during some games in european ties.

I hope we can make the break to

    -not being walloped

-not playing better than the opposition but losing in the last ten minutes

-not hoping we get some points so we’re better than the worst team there’s ever been in the CL

-not having a feeling of anger at the use of the celtic brand by roaster debt ridden cnut teams who can go forth etc.

BR can max out our football so we can create goalscoring chances (even with the normal escape goats on the park) and hopefully get some via KF.

But KS can do something just as important – stop the opposition thinking

    -it’s celtic

-they’re shite from a shite league

-chase and press high ‘n they’ll panic

    – we’ll shut the crowd up and chances will come

come to think of it that’ll KS will be very useful against the huff and puff in RAACland.

  8. HS- The guy who told me the possibility of no tickets for CP- said the directive came from the polis, speculation re when they are back in Poundland, but one end of September Bennett said, looks like a stretch. He said they dont want to try and segregate 2,300 Celtic fans at Hampden, if they don’t get tickets in a couple of weeks, the decision would need to be made soon, and we will obviously get the blame.

I would be surprised if our club didn’t ask a simple question ” can you guarantee our 2,300 ticket for the Derby in January “.

If the answer is they can’t, then I would expect the club to withdraw their allocation!

Celtic have apparently done the preparatory work for accommodating Sevco supporters in September, there is no guarantee when Sevco will be playing at IBrokes full stop. They haven’t finished their own area, let alone started the preparations for the segregated Celtic supporters due to be there in January.

If withdrawing the Sevco allocation isn’t already a topic for Celtic bosses, it should be IMO

I’ll state again- Reo was getting plaudits for the way he stood up to the Killie hardmen last week and there were queries of whether he’d bulked up (he hasn’t; he’s just got cuter in learning how to play against the agricultural tackles that are allowed in Scotland but never seen in Japan). Yes he lost a few jousts this week but Brendan did not feel the need to criticise him or sub him until the 75th minute.

So, we are talking of transferring him after one great game and one middling game because of a perceived historical problem. The wee man was hitting great passes to disturb the high line of Man City and Chelsea. He had a great game in week 1 of the SPFL and we are about to lose Matt, possibly. We should not be selling Reo until we’ve seen him thrive in our CL campaign and raise his profile at least. Unless someone is willing to pay MOR type money and I don’t see that happening.

  13. Tom McLaughlin on

So what if Rangers say the January fixture will definitely be played at Ibrox and Celtic allow their fans access on 1st September, then come November say, Rangers announce that Ibrox won’t be ready in January?

I can’t see Celtic excluding Rangers supporters on the basis that Ibrox MIGHT NOT be available in January.

Did I miss anything off his CV ?

Regardless … IMHO … the story is recycled tosh.

    “CQN Echo chamber?”

    Really???.

    ———————————–

“Adam and Paolo were supposed to be in the USA”

    – I missed that one- who supposed it?

    ————————————–

“It IS debatable whether we are weaker or better than last year but you are attributing that to Brendan making some of the previous projects and not good enoughs more serviceable for the Celtic team.

Dare I say that the recruitment team (which in my world, includes Brendan; despite the Soap Opera conflict view) that brought these dismissed projects have been vindicated too in seeing the development potential in them even if they don’t crack the team in their first 6 months with us.

    ————————————–

“The Kyogo injury and the Celtic Parsimony” were well trailed on here and elsewhere”

But only one of those has been vindicated and we don’t know how bad the shoulder pop is yet. We, certainly, have no idea, unless we are conducting the negotiations, if “parsimony” and “low-balling” are the reasons behind Norwich being unwilling to sell Idah at all, far less early on in the window, or whether Bernardo not being here was down to us being penny pinching or Benfica or Paolo’s agents raising “leetle problems” that caused the transfer to slow down for a while.

Either way, we have gone from forecasting doom, misery, embarrassment & disgrace on our USA tour, to forecasting doom, misery, embarrassment & disgrace in our early league and LC campaign. And when none of that comes to pass, it just gets turned to “Well, now Kyogo’s out- the predicted shit is definitely gonna hit the fan this time.”

I would have thought that the Post Seville Downsizing Slow Lane Doom Predictors, an act that was regularly booed off at the old Burns Howff, would have become a little less confident in displaying their “End is Nigh” placards. They still have the memory of the 2020/21 season where their prediction came up in spades, to keep them warm. But that lead them to double down and say it would be 2-3 years before we’d win a title back, thus getting back onto their usual Michael Fish level of predictive accuracy.

    ——————————-

“The Idah proposed signing is a symptom of a previous failed regime (we hope)”

Is it? I thought the prolonged Idah pursuit was an indication that this was the guy Brendan wanted and he did not yet want to turn to back up options on the B list or C list just yet. But it’s just a thought on my part. A thought that fits the facts a little bit better than the view that the suits are just wasting time and annoying Brendan by still talking to Norwich when Brendan wants them desperately to look elsewhere. I’ve no idea if that’s right or wrong as I’m not close pals with BR and, even if I was, I’d expect him to be a bit more reticent in discussing delicate transfer issues with punters who are just being nosy.

    —————————-

If we sign Adam Idah next week or tomorrow or the last day, I won’t be saying all is fine, especially if Matt goes and I’ve never heard anyone in this “echo chamber” state that view. It’s an invented straw-man argument.

If Adam & Paolo is all it is and Matt and several others leave without replacement, I will state now – that is an inadequate window- no question of it. I’d see us light in left back cover, defensive midfield cover, Centre back cover (if Lagerbielke, Kobayashi & Nawrocki all leave, or even if just 2 depart.) We might even still be weak at striker cover as Adam can be out at the same time as Kyogo (if Kyogo is indeed out currently).

So, I fully expect there will be more warm bodies incoming than just Schmeichel, Sinisalo, Bernardo & , possibly, Adam Idah.

Are the Doom and Gloom Echo Chamber Collective willing to bet otherwise?

Admittedly on the basis of a single moderately successful season at Admira Wacker plus preseason friendlies …..

… young Anderson looks like he might have something?

If so, get a sturdy type on loan at LB for a season and gradually promote Anderson as the third left back this season or get him a half season loan.

If Greg Taylor signs a new deal (my preference) send the loanee home at end of 24/25 season.

If Greg leaves convert the loan.

In either case promote Anderson fully for 25/26 and we have competition at LB.

Easy on paper. Difficult in reality.

  23. Watching the Hoops for many decades now and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game where our goalie went through a full ninety minutes without having to make any kind of a save. Kasper did all his work in the States a few weeks ago but yesterday he could have sent some obliging fan to the Hibs bar and bring him a nice cool pint of stout that he could sip happily in his goal area.

Good team performance, defence was apart from a minor slip was flawless and Calmac with that cracker of a goal, Reo and Jamsie up to their usual trickery and Khun and Kyogo putting in a good shift for another three points.

A weekend with some surprise results- Saint Johnstone sweetie rustlers winning at Kilmarnock, Hearts gifting goals in losing to Dundee, and a narrow win by the Displaced Ibrox Nomads versus Motherwell, might have led to some low scores but, as always, some familiar names came too the front.

    The weekly winners were:-

Cosy Corner Bhoy- 11 pts (Not just the females in the family that have the gift)

    celtic mac- 10.5 pts

3= Nawlite, Slick71, Hamilton Tim, BC Milan, Gaz & Greenpinata- all on 9 pts

Joint bottom- Big Jimmy, maccargo & Belmont Brian 63- all on 1 pt (The bookies will be holidaying abroad again as the computer awarded the weekly wooden spoon to Large James)

This leaves the overall Leaderboard after 2 weeks as:-

    1= Leggy & celtic mac- 19 pts

2 Cosy Corner Bhoy- 18.5 pts

    3 Hamilton Tim- 17 pts

And, at the bottom, the early contenders who are shaming our co-efficient score are:-

    70th- Auldheid- 4 pts

69th- Usually a more pleasant position- maccargo- 5 pts

    68th- hairlikespaghetti- 5.5 pts

We have a week off Superbru with League Cup action next week. Deadline will now be Saturday 24th at 3 pm with 4 fixtures and 2 more on the Sunday 25th including Celtic going to Paisley. Hope you all have good luck

  25. PL should challenge the radio clyde caller saying he is still the celtic decision maker, like JF call out the blatant untruths.

  26. When Kyogo took a heavy knock and looked in trouble I noticed Brendan looked a worried man on the touchline indeed we probably all felt the same.

Mikey did his best in the circumstances and was brave when he challenged for that goal chance. But let’s hope the pursuit for that striker we are chasing and we all know who he is gets done asap.

  27. I don’t know what to make of celtic decision makers …I’ve still this nagging doubt there are people at celtic who would like BR to fail …I might be wide of the mark…..I ran a business I was what you could call careful, did ok and moved it on.

So I can see the board thinking we’ll we probably won’t be in CL next few years but with a possible cash in bank at 100 million it’s beyond incredible that we couldn’t have a NET spend of 20 million even if we sell O’Riley for 25 !..there would be NO financial risk of a 45 million spend …Still have EIGHTY MILLION FFS !!

You’re not as alone as I am .

I thought that Scales was a contender for MOTM ,along with Callum ,and Taylor.

I also thought that Khun failed on too many occasions with his final ball .

    TT

  29. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I also thought Scales played well (apart from one threepenny bit heid clearance) whereas CCV looked a wee bit less convincing at times.

Obviously, it looks like Scales has been told to look for Kyogo with the occasional long ball to keep the opposition defence guessing – which is a good idea but will always have a small success rate.

He did OK – but he isn’t Franz Beckenbauer reincarnated – and if he was, he wouldn’t be at Celtic.

  30. All joking aside. We need a striker even if it’s a rubbish Scottish one. Mikey or Maeda won’t do.

The team set up need someone to be the focal point. Celtic don’t suit a false 9. If not Miloski or Shankland then how about Simon Murray

Desperate stuff I know but Kyogo will keep getting injured. Sign Idah if we can but we need 2 strikers

  31. BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 1:03 PM,

    Good Post As Usual…

For me the sad thing about this window is the bringing out and dusting off, of the pre-Ange excuses.

They were very poor excuses then, they have no credibility whatsoever now.

The approach changed when Dominic McKay came in and supported Ange on recruitment…

    It proved…

Recruitment could be done in a timely manner

That good players will come to Celtic

That you don’t have to pay huge transfer fees for quality players…

You are correct, Bernardo and Idah should have been back in the fold for the US trip.

We have replaced Joe Hart with Kasper, Siegrist with Sinisalo…

So, an improvement no doubt but like for like changes.

We have made Bernardo’s loan agreement into a buy, after protracted negotiations

That’s it, more than ten weeks into the window, half a dozen players out, three players in.

A terrible performance by the Celtic Executive

It is worth repeating Brendan Rodgers recent words…

“I’ve always said that recruitment is vital for success on the football pitch. Bringing in the players that allow you to elevate the game. Especially when you go up in the Champions League then the recruitment of players is crucial. Especially in the big clubs, if you don’t get it right then you have very little chance to put it right.

If you don’t bring in a player that suits your style and is suitable for the football that you want to play – improving that player when there’s very little time is very difficult.

That’s why you want to get in not just a player but the right player who can elevate you and the team’s game and that he’s a sufficient level. It will allow you to improve. That’s absolutely key. I’m looking at by the end of the window for signings, and that is when you can judge.

I know that supporters want to see that team on the pitch, and as managers, we want the players in quickly and integrated. At the end of it, if we can get to the end of August and have a stronger squad than what we finished with last season, it will still be a successful window for us.

The point you make is absolutely correct – to have success on the football pitch, you need to recruit, and you need to recruit the best possible players you can, if you want to achieve in European football.”

So far we have went backwards on recruitment since the end of last season, the Board have got just over two weeks now to put things right.

The Board had all the resources necessary at their disposal, yet that is over two months of flaffing about by the Executive very, very, poor…

    Hail Hail
