Imperious Celic win with gears to spare

244

Despite a good result at Easter Road, Celtic were unable to put any distance between themselves and nearest challengers, Aberdeen, who matched their two-goal win at home to St Mirren.

It took less than three minutes for Nicolas Kuhn to open the scoring against Hibernian with a peach of a goal.  Kyogo’s shot was spilled by Bursik in the Hibs goal, James Forrest was first to react and smashed the ball low across the face of goal.  The ever-alert Kuhn was on his toes and slid the ball into the empty net at the far post.

Callum McGregor doubled the advantage with what will surely be goal of the month in 19 minutes with a thunderous shot from 26 yards.  The main surprise by halftime was that Celtic’s advantage was not greater.  Hibs only consolation was that they were facing Celtic, not Dundee.

The second half was largely a different story.  Poor distribution by both central defenders, and on one occasion by Kasper Schmeichel, and a drop-off in movement in the middle of the park, allowed Hibs some time on the ball inside the Celtic half.  They threatened and (if they were any better) could have narrowed the gap, but Celtic always had a few gears to move up.

It is early days but the three-in-a-row champions are already looking imperious.

  1. Love all the crap about a rubbish transfer window.

No one has made single suggestion as to what good looks like.

    Who should we sign ?

  2. Chris Mepham getting moved on by Bournemouth, Brendan contacted him in the summer,a left CB I think

  3. Managed a break at 10:59 this morning. Got on the website at 11:01. Bagged myself a few tickets for Sunday. A repeat performance and result against the hibees will do for me. Yahoooo!

“You are correct, Bernardo and Idah should have been back in the fold for the US trip.”

That’s not exactly what BSR said- he said “they were supposed to be in the USA” i.e someone had proposed this had to happen or supposed it should. It does not read as “it would have been a good idea to have them there”, presumably so we could have beaten Chelsea and Man City by wider margins.

Both have played for Celtic recently and Brendan felt confident in sending Paolo out days after he arrived. Adam Idah has played for Norwich and, if signed in time would feature next week v Hibs in the LC.

The idea persists that Brendan is consulted about targets and then inexperienced naive suits are sent out to land them or fail to land them, and Brendan has no further involvement until they come back and tell him they got him or they didn’t get him. We play a team game and that is not team play.

The idea that Brendan is not IN the Recruitment team is fanciful and he will have been involved with the discussions about ceiling levels for various targets. Many still prefer the Soap Opera story that Brendan wants targets and the Suits just undermine and thwart him.

  5. Tim Malone Will Tell on

Mepham is interesting – I watched him play for a season at Brentford when he was just starting.

Very cultured central defender – a football player if you like – but prone to make the odd defensive error. Not sure if that makes him the much touted “Champions League standard” or not?

I think Adam and Paulo were part of a plan to be signed early doors and given Chris MacKay was in Lisbon weeks before we left for USA it was reasonable supporters ( maybe not you ) would ‘suppose’ Paulo was part of a plan. When you go on a pre season tour you’d want your new signings with you. Adam Idah even without an ‘option to buy’ agreement joined in on the fun ‘saga’ on Social media with photos of airport runways unknown, around when Celtic were jetting off. Celtic wanted Adam Idah and made it known to Norwich before their new manager had even seen him play, pretty obvious also that most big clubs wouldn’t dream of taking one centre forward on a prestigious trip, even as a just in case. Game two in Scotland with one centre forward and three centre forwards one a project, another a converted winger, and a previous loanee all gone, wasn’t a plan.

The Head of recruitment at Celtic was – ssssshhhh don’t say it ‘ sacked ‘ and in most football clubs let alone PLC’s you’d get to know who had been his replacement. In my world too, BR is part of the recruitment team just as he was last year, we don’t know for sure who is heading it up though? Maybe because we sacked the ‘Title’ as well, and left it all to Brendan to sort out. So far he’s ‘nodded out’ Saed Haksabanovic, Daniel Kelly, Rocco Vata, Oh heon yung, Bosun Lawal – others I’ve missed?

Mea culpa for Kyogo ‘popped shoulder’ post, I think Idah will be here by the weekend anyway, albeit a few competitive games late. I think you’ll be extremely busy if you hope to convince the Celtic support even the gentlemen of CQN, that there’s no element of parsimony at Celtic you’ll need to include your entire dossier of workings.

I too, think we’ll sign more players in the next few weeks, somebody in the echo chamber will say ‘it’s not good enough’ i don’t I think it’s a ‘warm body’ scenario which we only really seen lately when Ange first got off his plane. It’s ‘quality’ key positional signings BR wants, and if those that believe that’s all that’s holding things up, then good luck to them.

  7. SAINT STIVS @ 7:13 PM,

    echo! Echo!! ECHO!!!

    BURNLEY78 @ 7:14 PM,

Firstly I’ve saw lots and lots of suggestions, speculation being the life blood of the blog…

Now, you must put this transfer window in context, at the bottom of the last page is a comment by me with Brendan Rodgers stating his recent view on recruitment, he obviously wants to see the standard of player elevated.

In 2023 we lost six of Ange’s first team squad, here was our 2023 recruitment…

Kobayashi – Jenz replacement, Squad Development, Fail

    A. Johnston – JJ replacement, first team player

    Iwata – Squad player

    Oh – Development player, sold

Odin Holm – Development player – prospect

Marco Tilio – Development player – failed

Yang – Squad Development player – struggling

Kwon – Squad Development player – failed

Nawrocki – Starfelt replacement – unfit

Gusfaf – Squad Development player – struggling

Luis Palma – Jota replacement – prospect

In 2023, we lost six first team players, we manage to successfully replace one, Alistair Johnston coming in for Juranovic.

Who’s the best, tough to say, different strengths and weaknesses, yet we must put Alistair down as a success.

    That’s one out of eleven.

Now we can say Bernardo as a loan to buy means we have a good squad player who could develop into a first team regular

We can also say players like Palma and Holm are developing well, but please read what the manager said.

What our player recruitment needs to deliver.

Hopefully there will always be a place to get the Palma’s and Holm’s in on a three year development plan.

Yet there is over half a dozen players there we didn’t need to buy.

The transfer fees, wages, and time would have been much better spent bringing in two players who could have elevated the first team.

We now have only two weeks to complete three months work.

We must hope the Executive have been like ducks, calm on the upside but paddling like dickens underneath

2024 could be as embarrassing as 2023 the way things are going…

    Hail Hail

  8. lets all do the huddle on

Love all the crap about a rubbish transfer window.

No one has made single suggestion as to what good looks like.

    Who should we sign ?

you are obsessed with that shitey patter.

whatever names people bandy about wont have any relevance to who we do or dont sign.

our scouting team dont sit and read cqn to get signing targets.

ok, i agree with you then that there are absolutely no players whatsoever in the whole world that are available. none, not one, zero.

actually im only kidding obviously – i dont agree with your irrelevant pish at all.

  9. SFtBs @ 7:38 PM,

You seem to be missing the point, it’s not about the results in the USofA, it’s not even about results in the SPL

It’s about having player recruitment fit for purpose, we know what Brendan Rodgers is asking for, it is an imminently sensible way to run recruitment.

Player management, first team development is crucial, the Manager has already stated how tight for time they are in that regard.

That is what a pre-season is for

If the pre-season isn’t of use, then let the players have a much longer break.

If the pre-season has merit, bring in the players that will elevate the first team, then integrate them and condition them in the pre-season.

There would have been a huge feel good factor for the squad out in America, squad players were taken out, B players were taken out and youths were taken out there.

These are football players, they are not robots, we must give them every opportunity to integrate with their new club mates – teams not individuals get results

See my list of 2023 recruits, how many fit Brendan Rodgers player profile.

    He’s made it crystal clear

The blame game and smokin’ mirrors of the last decade don’t wash…

    Hail Hail

  10. BSR

“I think Adam and Paulo were part of a plan to be signed early doors and given Chris MacKay was in Lisbon weeks before we left for USA it was reasonable supporters ( maybe not you ) would ‘suppose’ Paulo was part of a plan. ”

    ——————————–

Where did you see this plan? Would you need to “suppose” anything if there was a plan. I daresay Chris McKay was in Lisbon, and in Norwich, early doors too, but they never landed either of them.

You or me can suppose that this was due to the ineptitude of Chris McKay or someone else or we can suppose that the new Norwich manager never wanted to sell anyone until he had evaluated his squad and we can suppose that he was quoting large transfer fees in the local Norfolk papers because these things happened.

Now Brendan did not say – go to Norwich and Lisbon and pay them what they want. He might have stipulated or at least, agreed. Paolo is a useful player to have but Benfica are asking too much- see if you can get the price down a bit even if it takes longer. He might have told or agreed with the suits that we want Adam as a known effective contributor but my maximum value for him is less than £10m- anything above and we walk, after trying to knock the price down.

And so, delays occur because Norwich don’t play ball as their new manager needs time to get to know his squad and sign who will be his replacement if he lets him go. Benfica are unwilling to fold at the first sign of steel by Celtic and so negotiations continue – as they alert other clubs to Paolo’s availability but nobody pays the price they set for Celtic last year and so Celtic get a knock down price and not another McGinn situation because Villa didn’t want McGinn.

Brendan said he’d prefer signings to get in as early as possible in the window, in “an ideal world” but he quickly added that there is no ideal world and so, sometimes, you have to be patient.

Suppositions can lead anywhere but I am listening only to the words Brendan actually said, and not to his body language or the true meaning underlying the dictionary definition of words used.

But neither of us knows which suppositions accord nearer to the truth and we probably never will. An established narrative is set in stone about the McGinn Affair and the Willo Flood Window and it does not account for all the facts. The suits bad/ fit people good is accepted by 75%+ of our support. To me it is merely a comforting lie.

  11. UPDATE: Celtic have agreed a deal worth up to £9.5m for Norwich City striker Adam Idah.

It’s understood the initial fee will be £8.5m, with £1m worth of add-ons.

Norwich have also inserted a 15% sell-on clause into the deal.

    Anthony Joseph

    —————–

no wonder they wanted to haggle.

so the “just pay the money2 moaners can move on to the next target.

    he beeter be better than

kyogo who we can sell now

  12. Brendan needs to work out how to get him and Kyogo in the same team,we won’t be paying that money for a sub

  13. OK- it sounds as we have got both Paolo and Adam now.

Please vote on what we should next angst over.

    a) We ddi not get then in on time and we will lose the LC tie v Hibs

    b) We still don’t have a left back cos we fancied about for ages on Idah & Bernardo

    c) Sevco will beat Kiev tomorrow and steal our CL money

    d) We’ve only played Diddy teams in the league and Sevco are still gonna beat us

    e) The Main Stand is falling down and we can’t use Hampden cos Brer Hun is squatting there

    f) EPL starts next week and a manager will get sacked in the first month & they’ll come after BR

    g) We’ve lost Bosun Lawal and Kobayashi and never replaced them.

    h) Rangers Lassies scored more than Celtic Ladies in the 1st SWPL game

    i) Peter Lawwell stole Brendan’s Coke from the fridge and he’s gonna leave again

    j) The Rangers are comin’- definitely this time

  14. SFtBs @ 8:28 PM

    k) Two and a half months haggling to complete, 8.5mn for Adam Idah

    Hail Hail

  15. What a good transfer window would look like is a reinforced spine : keeper , centre half (passer) , centre mid , centre forward.

Big Kasper and Adam , 2 down , possibly Stu for midfield as backup been over the course , so for me another 2.

Left back position seems tricky to fill for lots of teams , for me Craig was better last CL , AJ looked all over the shop , hopefully that experience will help him this year.

We just need a few bigger and faster units in the first 11 for CL.

£8.5 million, £1 million in add-ons 15% sell on being reported

    ………….

    I was told Norwich wanted £12m 🤔

Maybe that includes the sell on, which means we will sell him for £16.66m.

The only Celtic plan I’ve ever seen in print was a blue print plan for the rebuilt main stand before Fergus McCann arrived.

You could argue, there’s your parsimony right there in your own musings “see if you can knock them down a bit, they want too much ”

Celtic could be accused of not being up to speed with ‘the going rate’ down through time, not just when we’re suddenly the richest wee/big club in the world. Somebody is still a ‘ tough negotiator ‘ copyright Lyon directors over our sale of Moussa Dembele. All well and good, but the newly found wealth IMO puts new onus on Celtic to change the net spend, and cease with ‘the quality won’t come’ ‘it’s so hard’ mantra.

You’re right though supposition is you don’t know, and I don’t know, in fairness to ‘the board’ I’ve already posted, that they’re pioneers (good or bad) in the fully legitimate multi million pound financial transfer dealings in Scotland.

    p.s. I think your 75% is more like 90%

  18. Really liked the look of Idah when we won the league at Kilmarnock. Fast, big, powerful and held the ball up brilliantly. Can also finish.

Reckon he’ll be worth what we pay and we’ll get more back for him. Hope he stays a few years though.

It’s. Squad game and him and Kyogo offer us different attributes in attack. Good to have options.

    Mon the hoops! 😃🇮🇪🍀⚽️🏆🏆🏆

  19. Adam Idah will play a key role in our season ahead and hopefully many more I wonder what length of contract was and the bhoy was made to play for us and will prove so I firmly believe.
