Imperious champions like Celtic are commercially and competitively beneficial

267

There are five games between Celtic and a third successive Scottish Cup win, a run of success achieved only by Rangers (in the 60s) and Aberdeen (in the 80s).  Brendan Rodgers’ priority for the remainder of the season will be to win the league title, but with the embarrassment of trebles and seven-in-a-row leagues, matching the successive wins record in the Scottish Cup is a significant and worthy target.

Retaining the Cup also denies pretenders the opportunity to put a stake in the ground, a bit like we did against the other Airdrieonians (who perished when they were unable to pay David Murray’s bill) in the 1995 Final.

There’s a notion that Celtic playing Monopoly with Scottish football is a bad thing from a competitive or commercial sense, but I suspect the opposite is true.  On any given season the Cup would be sacrificed for the league, but everyone else wants to win a trophy, any trophy – this trophy.  Every competition is a chance to deny historically imperious champions.  So let’s just win it.

Couple of historical tidbits but otherwise unreadable.

Not as if we don’t have any issues to discuss …

Worse than the Times third leader on a slow news day.

The optimist in me thinks that this is just short term filler before a big story.

The realist in me thinks that this is just board friendly filler to keep the plebs occupied.

Agree ADI_DASSLER – Cup record would be nice, but in terms of importance, the league Championship is several orders of magniture greater.

Not saying I’m not interested in the Scottish Cup, but it pales into insignificance against the league.

Should be a nice wee surface for the scum to play on tomorrow night.Probably called off.

  4. Queens Park won the 1st 3 finals in a row.

Then Vale of Leven won the next 3 finals in a row.

Then Queens won the next 3 after that.

Those first 9 were won before celtic even existed. Something called rangers appeared in 2 finals.

the deid ones won it 3 times in a row from 34 to 36 and again 48 to 50. cELTIC NEVER REACHED ANY OF THOSE FINALS.

those huns did it again 62 to 64. Beating celtic in 63.

aberdeen then did it 82 to 84. Beating the huns twice and us on the 3rd win.

so its been done lots of times, just not us, which is a source of bemusement to me.

all eyes should be on 8 in a row, i aint fussed with a cup win or another uefa round, mere distractions to the most important prize. would be nice to win another treble mind.

  5. MADMITCH,

So what is the all important “Other

things”,we should be discussing?.More Mogadon stories about bent Referees.More transfer drivel, taken from the rags.Or knowing you, some jibe at PL.We have not had any of these for some time, have we?

We do have a Scottish cup tie on Saturday,so I think a bit of distraction away from the norm,is very welcome. If it does not suit you, hang around,I am sure the blog will get back to your favorite themes soon.

Press and hold on the text you want to copy. The text you are pressing on will highlight in light blue (at least on an Apple device) and at the beginning and end of the text there will be two lines with rounded ends, one up, one down.

Drag the lines to copy the text you want. The option to copy will be above the text, press that and when you want to paste it somewhere else, press and hold on the comments box for example in CQN, the option to paste will be there and your done.

  9. Talking of a ‘sell out’,how about the SFA selling Scottish Cup ties to an obscure satellite TV company, and making the KO at 5.15 on a Saturday night? for a few quid more than Sky or BT would have paid.Premier Sports is Setanta Sports in new clothes, and remember how they sold us down the river….

This is the least imperious we’ve looked in a very long time.

  16. Stairheedrammy on

The first half of the season saw Brendan experiment wildly with team formation in away games immediately after European nights. Because of late goals in at least 2 of these games and a below par performance against the angry mob, that despite their dominance was won by a deflected goal and a marginal offside call amongst some other officiating bias, we find ourselves much closer to the SFA works side than we expected. Without significant player change, without wholesale experimentation and with some less biased refereeing, we are likely to win the league comfortably. So stick that in your pipe.
