Important takeaways from Uefa comment on Postecoglou

364

Today’s news cycle is dominated by comments from a Uefa spokesperson who confirmed Celtic have applied for an exemption for Ange Postecoglou from holding a Uefa Pro Licence.  There are important takeaways from this.

Ange’s signature must be on this application.  This could only happen if he had permission from Yokohama, his current employer, and contract terms had been agreed.

Exemption will be granted, this facility is there to provide for candidates like Ange.  The Pro Licence requirement is there to ensure standards in the European game, not to act as a closed shop.  Celtic are pursuing a similar Work Permit application to allow him to take up employment in this country.  This will occupy another day’s news cycle, but Ange will meet this requirement too.

Yes, Ange will not be able to take charge of a Celtic game for weeks, but our June schedule has been kind in this respect.  There is nothing to stop him planning a squad or backroom team for next season, I expect he is at least a week into this process.  If he’s good enough, the hassle getting him here is worth it.

Pretty gutted at the booing when England players took the knee at the Riverside Stadium last night.  Must be horrible for the players.  Hard to believe we are in 2021.

It is certainly no worse than what feels like the majority of posts of late.

  3. The Hun fans will boo anyone who takes a knee in the new season….its a cert.

The Ange situation is completely embarrassing. Surely the requirement for a licence must have been considered? If it was overlooked, that’s a joke too.

Where does the buck stop? Who is to take responsibility for the delay which now appears to be inevitable?

If we can’t have this man until a licence application is processed (with consequent delay), surely we must look elsewhere? Clarke would be the obvious alternative imho

I cannot believe the guff in Paul’s article. Absolute nonsense, I’m afraid. There is NO evidence he’s effectively been working for a week.

He cannot meet players for as couple of weeks at least due to covid.

There is no mention of the inability to meet, train or assess the players. There is no evidence that a backroom team is taking shape.

Next year is the biggest financial opportunity in a decade. The incompetence of the board is staggering. The attitude of the author of the article is also staggering

Too long typing to get lost at end of previous thread….

I have written every time we bring out another dull, dark, away strip.

I’ve written at length, to no avail.

    Here is the short version.

Peripheral vision of footballers is above average as they are always checking for opponents. When players suffered long term injury they lost a little of the peripheral vision advantage.

Alex Ferguson became convinced that a large part of the returning players not being match fit was down to the loss of peripheral vision

On advice from an optician players peripheral vision exercises were introduced ( similar to the bleep tests carried out by opticians when you get your bi-annual check up )

    Back to the topic…

Football strips exist to allow players (and supporters) to distinguish players from each team.

John Collins refused to allow the Hibs to wear their black strip, although contractually obliged to.

Fergie famously changed from grey to blue at half-time.

Why do we continue to bring out bottle green, black, charcoal strips that make our players less visible?

The answer is purely commercial, as we all know. Dark strips will sell well amongst the fans who perhaps are a few pounds and inches above their fighting weight.

They look great in the pub, they look OK in the stands , they look crap on TV and on a dull November afternoon they make our players 50 yards away , invisible.

    Maybe that’s the plan ,

if you can’t see me ,

    you can’t booooo me.

I got annoyed again and wrote more than intended.

    Bring back the bumble bee.

It shouldn’t have been allowed to happen. They should have been told well in advance that if they tried to gather they would get hammered. But instead there was some mealy mouthed pious nonsense about hoping they would be responsible, when the dogs in the street knew what they had planned. So if the authorities ie the government and their police force knew what was coming they should have allowed them into their midden, where they would have been contained, because the alternative was what happened.

    ……………….

I agree with MOST of what you Posted above, except about allowing THEMS ( 10,000 each of FOUR Days) Ipox…that scenario would have allowed THEMS not One but FOUR Separate Days of ” Celebrating” , not forgetting that thousands MORE would probably ” celebrate” OUTSIDE Ipox anyway, along with the 10,000 INSIDE. No doubt, that they would ALL Congregate and march on George Square…for each of the FOUR Days.

I would also be in favour of Police Scotland using Water Cannons on the great Unwashed to try and disperse them…and maybe the odd machine Gun here and there ?

My humble instincts tell me this is a huge gamble

    Not a calculated risk

    Not a speculative option

    Not even a project

This is a huge unknown manager who has been plucked from an unknown league who is asked to win the league in year one given CL Group stage chances next year (and the £50m)

    What a huge huge gamble.

At the end of last year when I was calling for an end to NL I promised to eat humble pie if we win the league. No surprise I have a lot left over

I will do the same again with Ange I will support him and I wish him well BUT. FFS What a gamble by whoever is making this decision

I would not be surprised if DMcK is questioning his decision to join this circus.

We all assumed Howe was working in the background as well.

    Complete incompetence.

If Howe was the number 1 target and Ange number 2, then the time limit for Howe agreeing to come should have been set at the beginning of May latest, so that issue of the UEFA licence and the subsequent quarantine period for Ange would have been factored into his appointment.

Of course, that assumes competence. This strikes me as another last minute rush. I would wager they had no clue of his licencing status till last weekend.

Also, all this hassle for a guy who has never managed in Europe? We’ve had months to look into targets and diligence and yet we end up here?

Ange, like Ronny, is mixed up in the City Group. Does Harkin, underqualified according to Celtic insiders, give us a list of managers that PL follows up on?

It’s staggering to watch this amateur hour. Even more so when you realise the guy in charge of the rodeo was paid just under £3m two years in a row.

Smashing. We’re only 8 months behind schedule. I hope this guy is a miracle worker despite his modest CV. He’s going to need to be. I have been struck by the bullishness of the Aussie commentators on this. They are very confident he’ll succeed. Mind you, I’m not sure they understand he’s a dead duck if he loses the first two games against the huns and is 18 points behind at Xmas. Not that that could ever happen at a club as spotlessly run as Celtic.

As Obama said, progress isn’t a straight line. We’ve seen plenty of evidence of that in Engerland and by their cousins in supremacist world view closer to home in recent months. We’ll evolve past these Neanderthals in time. It seems nothing ever happens a quickly as it should, right?

  14. Any stock exchange announcement is going to seem a bit pointless given the licence application.

    ……..

I obviously remember the Bumble Bee Strip from the 1990’s.

Whenever The Celts wore that Strip…The Bhoys were BUZZING….and would make constant BEE Lines towards the oppositions Goal.

  16. This is the biggest League season in all of Scotlands footballing history.

Whoever wins the league is STRAIGHT into group stages of the CL with a financial reward of at least £30 million.

A GOLDEN ticket if you like.

As I say no other season gone by has promised so much money for the winner.

Yet our board are asleep at the wheel and could not give a flying duck. Going from shambles to shambles.

Not fit for purpose and people should be sacked.

The latest debacle is going for an unknown manager who has done nothing in european football.

I like everyone sincerely hope he does well but my god what a gamble after last seasons shambles and I hope he has the balls to say no thanks to John Kennedy and Strachan junior.

  17. Okay … let’s do it this way … the way I do something with the MSM.

“Today’s news cycle is dominated by comments from a Uefa spokesperson who confirmed Celtic have applied for an exemption for Ange Postecoglou from holding a Uefa Pro Licence. There are important takeaways from this.”

Today’s news cycle is dominated by a story three days old, but let’s not worry about that. Their own incomptence is on a level with that of our board. Suffice to say, if you were waiting on The Record breaking this story you were late to the party.

“Ange’s signature must be on this application. This could only happen if he had permission from Yokohama, his current employer, and contract terms had been agreed.”

That brings me no comfort whatsoever. It means that we are locked into this fiascotic appointment and that there is no going back.

“Exemption will be granted, this facility is there to provide for candidates like Ange. The Pro Licence requirement is there to ensure standards in the European game, not to act as a closed shop. Celtic are pursuing a similar Work Permit application to allow him to take up employment in this country. This will occupy another day’s news cycle, but Ange will meet this requirement too.”

No-one has ever suggested that he won’t get the exemption. It is almost a certainty. The question is, and remains, why no European club has sought one for him in 13 years, and they were a third division club in Greece. It’s the question no-one wants to answer.

“Yes, Ange will not be able to take charge of a Celtic game for weeks, but our June schedule has been kind in this respect. There is nothing to stop him planning a squad or backroom team for next season, I expect he is at least a week into this process. If he’s good enough, the hassle getting him here is worth it.”

The first admission that this guy might not be in the dugout for the pre-season matches … which are our proving ground for tactics and ideas and new innovations for Europe. Europe, you know, the thing that we need to sustain this multi-million pound squad and executive bonuses.

I find it troubling – I find it frankly shocking – that any Celtic site would try to pass off the idea that we will go into the pre-season games with the current coaching staff and current first squad as something not to be concerned about. I would be amazed if the writer believed a word of that, which kind of makes me wonder why he’s publishing it.

“Pretty gutted at the booing when England players took the knee at the Riverside Stadium last night. Must be horrible for the players. Hard to believe we are in 2021.”

JK and Gavin Strachan seem to be all but certain to be at the club next season.
