Important takeaways from Uefa comment on Postecoglou

364

Today’s news cycle is dominated by comments from a Uefa spokesperson who confirmed Celtic have applied for an exemption for Ange Postecoglou from holding a Uefa Pro Licence.  There are important takeaways from this.

Ange’s signature must be on this application.  This could only happen if he had permission from Yokohama, his current employer, and contract terms had been agreed.

Exemption will be granted, this facility is there to provide for candidates like Ange.  The Pro Licence requirement is there to ensure standards in the European game, not to act as a closed shop.  Celtic are pursuing a similar Work Permit application to allow him to take up employment in this country.  This will occupy another day’s news cycle, but Ange will meet this requirement too.

Yes, Ange will not be able to take charge of a Celtic game for weeks, but our June schedule has been kind in this respect.  There is nothing to stop him planning a squad or backroom team for next season, I expect he is at least a week into this process.  If he’s good enough, the hassle getting him here is worth it.

Pretty gutted at the booing when England players took the knee at the Riverside Stadium last night.  Must be horrible for the players.  Hard to believe we are in 2021.

  1. Let’s assume everything goes smoothly, it’s going to look something like:

    Sort out UEFA stuff – probably Monday now before we get that smoothed out;

    Sort out work permit – it took Wolves 8 days for Lage, so we can expect similar timescales, so that takes us to 15th June; plus a day or so to sort out getting his visa, travel arrangements, etc;

    He lands in Scotland on or around 17th June and straight into 10 days isolation;

That takes us to 27th June – less than a month before our first qualification game, and just 8 days before our pre-season camp in Wales. His strengths are supposed to be coaching but he has precious little time, and that’s not even thinking about a back room team who (if they are his choices) are likely to arrive even later!

If we were waiting for Ragnick, Benitez, or someone of that ilk, I’d say it’s not ideal but worth it. But we’re waiting for a guy who, whatever you think of his CV or record, is a gamble! And that’s before even thinking about our rebuild, which is enormous, without having a DoF in place to do that work, a scouting system of any note given Hammond, Penrice, et al have left, and a transition between CEOs.

World class in everything we do? Hmmm

A club like no other? Well I guess that’s true, but not for the right reasons.

  2. I will support the new manager, whoever he may be.

However, I have deliberately referred to our search for a new ‘management team’.

These days, most successful managers come as part of a team.

When we have gone for the piece meal option (Ronny, NFL 2nd stint) we have had some issues.

I wouldn’t expect the current target to be coming as part of a team. That is a worry for me.

    Done deal then Paul67 ?

    I don’t know anything about the guy, so I guess I don’t know what I don’t know !

  5. Absolutely agree on the booing of players taking the knee. Perhaps the best response would be for the players to take the knee during the national anthem? That is what happens in the US – and it signifies that the responsibility for tackling racism lies with the Government. The current practice in the UK and Europe of players taking the knee for a brief, officially sanctioned moment risks becoming meaningless if it just happens without thought or the risk of consequence.

  6. We could do worse than appoint wee Gordon as interim boss to smooth the way for ANGE P once his paperwork has been sorted out.

I’m getting the fear it’s looking like JK will still have a position at Celtic.

Why did no other Scottish team come in for this highly respected guy…..

Great post. Difficult to believe that, an experience politician, and Celtic Board member of many years, would put pen to paper such nonsense, after the fact. Disingenuous is too generous a description, delusional might just fit the bill.

Point of order though, the WHO have come up with a new system for naming new variants, and avoid such as Kent, South African and Indian, the latter now renamed ‘Delta’.

Needless to say, but I’ll say it anyway, it’s all Greek to me.

  8. “There is NO evidence he’s effectively been working for a week.”

” There is no evidence that a backroom team is taking shape.”

There’s NO evidence that he hasn’t! por cierto

  9. POR CIERTO:

Agreed. But all you’ve done there is quote somebody who stated a fact. So I’m not sure what part of it you disagree with. Paul stated an opinion, and in response the poster stated a fact.

    Here’s another opinion.

Paul’s belief rests on the idea that this guy has a say in his backroom team; I think that decision has been made already and is completely out of his hands. His backroom team is going to bear a suspicious relationship to the one Lennon left behind.

I could be totally wrong. But I don’t think I am.

  10. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

I can only imagine the hysteria if it was It’s-Definitely-Not-Rangers wanting an exemption!

So, looks like we could be going into the European qualifiers with a management team who have been under review for six months, unless of course I missed the outcome of the review in the “new year”!

I hope the review is actually for real, otherwise they are going to look like a right bunch of dishonest, incompetent charlatans. Which currently they don’t, obviously…..

  11. Spidey101 – I’d hope (!) that Ange is booking his flight right now so he can complete his 10 days isolation while the work permit and UEFA checks are progressing, there’s limited dependency between the activities after all. If all this is agreed then I assume he won’t be taking another Yokohama game, so is free to depart.

Why do all those things consecutively, when they can be undertaken concurrently.

  12. CardboardCSC on

Can’t wait to get back to Celtic park to support the team on the park and whoever is in the dugout. I hope we have a good one as I do every season. If not I will be back the following season God sparing good health etc. Hail Hail

We have one centre forward who gives the impression he wants away and two centre forwards who can’t run.

We called on Scott Brown as an emergency lamp-post when defending corners and free-kicks last season such is the dearth of adult sized defenders available for selection. He’s gone now.

None of our goalies show the front or game to be points savers.

    Over to you, Ange.

The whole recruitment process is a concern.

This bit though, the Pro Licence exemption, is a storm in a teacup.

    Anyone remember the movie Casino?

De Niro’s character had his licence revoked so continued to run the casino under a different job title.

Consultant Partners and Pathways manager for a couple of weeks?

BTW – Kheredine, any other current manager in Scotland working without a UEFA Pro Licence?

    🤔

  16. Re- Brian Wilson:

I feel a lot more than 10,000 would have turned up at Ibrox on that day anyway. Those who didn’t get into the ground would have assembled outside and then still made their way through the city to George Sq., along with some of those who had been inside, with the same inevitable outcomes, por cierto.

  17. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

BTW – well done Celtic for providing the core of last night’s national team.

I’m sure the SFA and their employee, Steve Clarke, will be as grateful as they’ve ever been.

  18. And another thing, just in case anyone is concerned that Ange might not get that permit to work in GB, well I’m pretty sure that Celtic FC will be paying him more than enough to meet whatever minimum income levels Priti Patel has set for aspiring incomers. Or as it used to be known, rubber stamped.

  19. Pathetic as ever. I hope you get paid for Kuenssbergesque sniveling efforts like this.

  20. The Onlooker – 100% agree regarding visuals and have thought the same for years.

67EWC – 100% agree that this is a huge gamble and as far as I can see not an educated one. Even if you are a fan of our owners and board any credibility they may have earned in recent years is completely lost in the shambles of the last year.

In my opinion, the UK and Scotland were lucky to have people like, Cook, Brown, Browne, Reid, Wilson, Beckett looking to advance people’s lives. Blair, Mandelson,

Coming from Pollok.one of europe designated “poor”areas. The people you quote would be chased.

    They betrayed their core/loyal voter

The rich got richer under the grintoothed liar.

wealth moved from poor to rich.

The Labour party were set up to counter the free market chaos.

under the liar they done the opposite.

Labours problem now is it has to show it is not a dilution of tory policies but something alternative.

for all those big hitters(and the poor felt it)

    there was

not one repeal of thatchers anti union law

not one top level tax threshold altered

not one limitation on 10 years of credit boom that ended in a bankin crisis.

    nothing progressive at all

oh and half a million human being slaughtered or displaced. ….

aye come to think of it a total class act if your a tory.total betrayal if you hoped things got better.alas they didnt.

I was clearing an old box of paperwork this morning and came across a good line from the Maestro in 1988, which I hadn’t remembered from those days.

It’s full sized A4 in green and white on the reverse of Brian Quinn’s letter to shareholders about the 2002 AGM.

“Celtic Football Club is the fans, without them there is no club. It was their centenary and their season, we were just part of winning the trophies for them.” – Paul McStay, 1988.

    Ambassador for life.

  25. SonsofErin – I don’t think he’ll be booking a flight until the rest is sorted out unless he’s going to book a flight everyday and hope!

The other bits won’t be done consecutively because one thing is dependant in the other – he won’t qualify for a work permit until it’s clear he qualifies under UEFA’s rules, he won’t be able to travel to the UK without WP and visa, he can’t quarantine until gets here – give or take a few days, what I’ve set out is our best case scenario

  26. If he’s good enough, the hassle getting him here is worth it.

some big ifs to be answered , how can failures like JK and the jobs for the bhoys coaching staff brigade from the development through to the first team still be involved beggars believe , an absolute shambles.

They are saying the licencing issue will take weeks. So could be mid June before that is sorted and not this Monday.

JK to be in charge for first competitive game of the season? Odds have been slashed

  28. I must admit, that I feel so much better for reading that Paul !!!.

Let’s hope for our sake he is refused a work permit.

  29. Terms must be agreed, his release from Japan sorted and his licence a formality…

    So where’s the announcement?

  30. Good luck renewing books with this fiasco.the 3 stoogies will be running the show.god help us!!!

  31. Spidey – Aussies can enter UK without a visa for a business trip of up to a month. I’d hope (there’s that word again) Celtic are exploring such options, rather than just deigning them not possible. 10 days is a big chunk of time to cut from the process, after all.

Absence of evidence doesn’t support a proposition.

Plus, we all thought Howe was doing that up till last Friday.

Ange has to go through Visa, Uefa licence, contract negotiations and get sign off from his current club that he can leave. He is also still manger of them during their season, so presumably is still in charge of duties over there.

Against all that,we believe that from Saturday he has been working on the background re the team etc.

It’s certainly possible, but given the complete mess our board have made of all decision recently, I’d say not probable.
