Important takeaways from Uefa comment on Postecoglou

364

Today’s news cycle is dominated by comments from a Uefa spokesperson who confirmed Celtic have applied for an exemption for Ange Postecoglou from holding a Uefa Pro Licence.  There are important takeaways from this.

Ange’s signature must be on this application.  This could only happen if he had permission from Yokohama, his current employer, and contract terms had been agreed.

Exemption will be granted, this facility is there to provide for candidates like Ange.  The Pro Licence requirement is there to ensure standards in the European game, not to act as a closed shop.  Celtic are pursuing a similar Work Permit application to allow him to take up employment in this country.  This will occupy another day’s news cycle, but Ange will meet this requirement too.

Yes, Ange will not be able to take charge of a Celtic game for weeks, but our June schedule has been kind in this respect.  There is nothing to stop him planning a squad or backroom team for next season, I expect he is at least a week into this process.  If he’s good enough, the hassle getting him here is worth it.

Pretty gutted at the booing when England players took the knee at the Riverside Stadium last night.  Must be horrible for the players.  Hard to believe we are in 2021.

Would agree, some just posting the same thing over and over again appears and reads like trolling. Might not be but it’s almost as if many would prefer to change conversation to a negative one if mood changes on the blog.

If you can attempt the rhetorical trick of stating that Brian Wilson’s stated views against the Scottish Government (not the SNP per se this time) can be dismissed because he is a “bitter Labour man” with an irrational hatred of the SNP”, am I justified in dismissing all your points because you are a disillusioned ex-Labour supporter who TUPE’d over to the non-progressive SNP? Or is it more complex than that?

How about accepting that the attempts to deter the George Square gathering(s) were much, much, much, much less than half-hearted and that the Scottish Government could and should have considered alternative proposals for smaller more controlled gatherings and that Ibrox Park itself would be everyone’s idea of one such suitable alternative?

If it was all about No large gatherings during Covid then there should have been extreme deterrence deployed against the BLM demonstration and the Kenmure Street demonstration too (I am glad there wasn’t because I was present at one of those despite the Scottish Government exhortation that I should not attend).

It cannot be just an argument about numbers because 500 or 1000 had already been allowed during lockdown, so why not 2 or 3 or 5 k now when we are much nearer to establishing a safer social environment with Covid?

And if a smaller figure was agreed for Ibrox , why not allow Murray Park to host a secondary event. It may not have prevented some determined thugs from lording it over the City Centre but I can guarantee that it would have been a smaller number allowing for greater control and easier dispersal. It would also have been supported more vigorously by the Ibrox club itself with more shame being heaped on those who did not attend official gatherings.

That is the main thrust of Brian Wilson’s argument and it is a rational and realistic one.

None of us likes seeing triumphalist gatherings of the ibrox hordes. The abject surrender of any coordinated planning between Authorities and the club ensured that this was the fiasco we endured. It takes a blind spot to say that Brian Wilson was looking to just make things easier for the Ibrox crowd; it would have made all our lives a little easier.

What occurred was the result of a deliberate lack of planning. Any other hue of Government at Holyrood would have got it in the neck for this but we much prefer our “Unionist” jibes.

P.S. Brian Wilson’s political record deserves much more respect in the round despite his Iraq War vote and despite the enmity that the SNP have for him.

You went on about how bad things were when we signed a newbee /rooky manager in 65, two years later we won the Big cup.

My post was along the lines of….. ANGE getting the gig we’ll be CL winners in two years, I’m having some of that positivity.

    3)Last Welshman ditto………2005 league?

    4)Last Irishman ditto…………2014 league?

  14. Is it Ok for me to be pretty laid back about the whole situation.

Firstly, I can’t influence what is happening.

Secondly, I’m not qualified to do the job of those who are doing it. And I have belief that those doing the job ARE qualified.

Thirdly, and I’m repeating myself, we don’t need a Wold Class manager in order win the league. We just need a competent manager. Who can organise, motivate, have a vision of how the team will play and get players who play to that style,

And winning the league is all I REALLY care about. Making it to the Europa League group stages would my next realistic target.

Wars start on beliefs that turn out not to be true. This was one of them.

No WMD were found despite this belief. Believe me, they could have been manufactured and “found” if our Allies had wanted to. But we were intent on toplling the dictator we ourselves had put in power in Iraq. It was a callous and chaotic strategy but we hoped it would help sow further confusion and disunity in the Islamic World. The architects Bush Snr and willing lietenants like Blair will have long left this earth and we will still be paying the price for our ineffectual adventures in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Brian Wilson voted in favour of the Government on going to war. it was a huge mistake, IMO.

But Brian has a proud record of advocating land reform and a blanced energy policy which can be set against that. The final sickening sight for me was to see him ousted from the West Highland Free Press on a Free Speech Issue by the intolerant Nationalists that now run that paper- a pale shadow of its former self.

  19. BTW, Godfather of Harlem is a pretty good TV series. Starring Forest Whitaker. Just about to finish the first of two series.

  20. Everyone knew Saddam didn’t have WMD. Yet another war where truth was the first casualty (the name of a good book by Philip Knightly).

There is no justification for pretending otherwise now and a lot of dead people and destroyed country to justify pointing out the truth.

“We just need a competent manager. Who can organise, motivate, have a vision of how the team will play and get players who play to that style,”

Erm, we just need a competent manager with a UEFA Pro Licence exemption, a work permit, one who is out of quarantine, and is available to take practice and pre-season games. You don’t want his first game to be a Champions League qualifier, right? And how, and more significantly when, is he going to “get” players who play to his style? As far as we know, he has hardly any knowledge of the football markets we typically shop for players. We have screwed up this appointment so royally, that Sevco may have built an unassailable lead in the league before he has a fair chance to get going. Effectively, regardless of his competency, we have presented a manager, immersing himself in a new culture, with formidable and entirely unnecessary handicaps. To me, that is simply unforgivable..

  25. Not trying to point score at all. And the deaths of any civilians is and was the worst outcome.

Are the hundreds of thousands if Kurds’ lives ethnically cleansed by SH worth less than those of the Iraqis’? They either supported Sadam or lived in a dictatorship where the could not speak out in fear of persecution and or death.

As a people the Kurds have been treated terribly and to this day are ill treated.

To me, it’s lazy not to mention the string of war crimes that took place, the mass genocide that took place before the subsequent actions.
