Impose a player on the manager or pay up

422

The Barton issue: it seems bizarre to suspend a player for four weeks after an incident, more so to extend that by a further week immediately before a clear-the-air meeting, but it’s not.

This has got nothing to do with the player. Whatever he did with a team-mate in the aftermath of our 5-1 win a month ago has nothing to do with his continuing suspension. Nor is the player’s subsequent charge for gambling on football.

I’m pretty sure it’s not even about money, or the player’s lack of ability. This is about the manager and his board. Who authorised his signing in the summer and on what basis was he employed? Warburton has played his hand by passing the issue up to his board. The board can try to impose the player on the manager, again, or they can find the money to make the problem go away.

Or maybe the manager will go instead.

  1. Our media lies ,distorts or ignores whats happening in Syria and Yemen and elsewhere.

I dont think it has ever been as bad in my lifetime for pure propaganda. However a lieing media is no excuse for being ignorant about what is really happening . There are dozens of genuine alterative on-line news sites run by truly ethical journalists. Check these out and then decide who is telling the truth.

  2. Dallas, Dallas……..

Not sure when you passed hem but I too saw that at 3.25pm. To be honest, I just smiled…….

  3. Jobo: As you probably know I’m in the singing section at the Blatterdome. Many songs sang at Celtic Park get an airing there too. Nice to here ‘Grace’ being adopted by the Ireland fans.

Voguepunter and Park Road 67, Jimmy ‘s wife was very funny in the documentary .

Agnes is one of the many carers who are unsung heroes dealing with family or friends who suffer from a horrible illness or illnesses .

Wullie Henderson looked very upset when he talked about the wee man.

Bertie Auld has risen even higher in my estimation after watching how much he thought of Jimmy and keeping his spirits up.

Jobo , we passed them about 3.15.

Your reaction is the best way to deal with them.

We live near the Torrance Hotel and some bands from the North of Ireland have stayed there when they are over for the big walk. The only positive is they are contributing to our local economy.

  6. Shane Duffy, blimey. Talk about dodging a bullet, more like a cannon. Horrible defender.

    Tontine Tim,

Thanks for the acknowledgement re John Jack. Am I right in saying that he was our CH in the 4-4 cup tie v them at Celtic Park?

The game where Johnny Hubbard scored a last minute penalty equaliser and we beat them 2-0 in the replay.

*my memory of that is my da speaking not too favourably of John Jack, seemingly he had a Regi but fared better in the replay, he only came intae the side due tae a career ending injury tae the Big Mhan.

I think Shearer virtually ended John Higgins’ career that afternoon.

*aye and Sean nearly ended his, durty wee bassa, he was approaching his 10th season with them, club captain and due a testimonial when they freed him, looked good on them at the time.

His da who was a good friend of Jocks was the groundsman at Douglas Park, Accies gave him a benefit and approached the deid team, they were too busy and offered an autographed ball, Jock moved in and sent a pretty strong side.

Believe me I’ve tried, but I just can’t built up any enthusiasm for the national team.

*me tae I really did and my da like yours wisnae interested. I recall a WC qualifier in Spain, with Scotland in the running for the finals in Sweden, which was televised all over the UK except in Scotland as the SFA pulled the plug on televised coverage so attendances at junior level did not suffer. This was May 1957 FFS.

We were all gutted at not seeing it and although Scotland were gubbed 1-4 they still qualified ahead of Spain courtesy of a 3-2 victory over the Swiss who had tied with Spain earlier on in the tournament we as weans at St Marys were delighted.

Next up was the WC in Sweden, my first World Cup, for the first and only time all home nations qualified.

Scotland, who were humiliated in Switzerland in 1954 when the manager was told NOT to pick any players from the deid team who were off to the USA in the summer to make themselves a few quid, had on paper a fairly decent squad including 3 Celts and 1 former one were initially meant to be managed by Matt Busby, but he was still recovering from Munich so they opted for the Bully Wee trainer WTF. Again it was hame before the postcards,

England and Wales both fared relatively well but it was the side from the Black North that caught the eye, well them and Brazil.

This would be the first time I saw the nationalistic side of my da. My paternal grampa was a culchie from south Fermanagh and my mother’s paternal grandparents came from Antrim, not too far fae the Blessed Brendan, to work in the quarries up Bonhill. Both were proud of their North of Ireland roots.

NI had a fabulous side then and I gained some “new” heroes that summer, Harry Gregg (who after sitting beside Liam Whelan at Munich and his comment just before the crash said this changed his outlook in life), Willie Cunningham (who Jock signed for the Pars), Danny Blanchflower, Billy Bingham, Jimmy McIlroy (who has a stand at Burnley named after him) Newry’s own Peter McParland and a young Derek Dougan (who wrote one of the best fitba books I’ve ever read “the sash he never wore” and for years canvassed for an all-Ireland side), only 1 Celtic minded person among them, and of course one of his all time favourite Celts, Bertie Peacock, oh and not forgetting the scorer of his sides lone goal on October 19, 1957.

Managed by in my da’s eyes the greatest fitba player ever, Magherafelt’s greatest son Peter Doherty. Nae wonder they were a great side.

They were resplendent in their emerald green strips and although they lost tae 3rd place France who had lost tae the eventual winners in the semis they were a joy tae watch and another Magherafelt native Harry Gregg was named in the team of the tournament, for years I had a soft spot for them.

Not so much now especially with the blue on their strips and a support that waves the butcher’s apron singing “why don’t you go home” among other war tunes.

  11. What is it with McCarthy these days, every time I watch him he’s fouling and looking to fight with people.

  14. 13 minutes into the second half and 5 long punts already from Duffy. Depressing. He’s an old school MON centre half, slow and rubbish on the ball. Brendan wont touch him, he’s a hammer thrower.

Voguepunter, I remember Scotsport occasionaly had interviews with Jimmy and Wullie on the show . You see could see the respect and affection they both had for each other.

Their was a tribute dinner for the much missed and wonderful Sean Fallon at the Albany Hotel many years ago. That runt McCoist had one the same night at another Glasgow Hotel.

Former rangers player , George Young was there , who was given a great reception . It turned out he was invited to Sally’s dinner but thought that highly of Sean , he went to his tribute dinner.
