Impressive O’Riley, Scott Brown lesson to Celtic

340

Whatever ails Aberdeen, for 15 minutes last night they rocked Celtic in a way no other Scottish side has in months.  Their mistake was to do so too early, approximately 30 minutes remained for Celtic to retake the lead; they did so within 60 seconds.  Momentarily, Ibrox rocked to “We shall not, we shall not be, ah ****”.  As they reached their phones to confirm the Aberdeen equaliser, the score showed 2-3.

The first half was as accomplished a second gear performance as I can remember at Pittodrie.  Celtic were 0-2 ahead without having to exert themselves.  That proved to be a false position, Aberdeen flooded the midfield at halftime and Celtic looked porous.  The home side’s first goal came from a clever free kick from the left, drilled along the turf to Ramirez, who peeled off to fire a deflected shot home.

Their second was more of a concern.  A straightforward cross from a free kick and header; textbook defensive scenario, one which haunted Celtic a year ago and we hoped we had overcome.

Some opponents bring the best out of certain players, for Jota, that opponent is Aberdeen.  The Portuguese has scored four against them in three meetings, a late winner at Pittodrie earlier in the season, the opener in a narrow win at Celtic Park, and two last night, all invaluable points.  He was denied a hattrick by an incorrect offside decision.

If Celtic fans had concerns about one goal they lost, Aberdeen fans would have been incredulous at the opening goal.  Neither goalkeeper nor defender claimed a ball they were first and second favourites for.  Jota made a run to the back post and hardly broke his stride to meet Matt O’Riley’s cross.

The impressive stats continue to mount up for O’Riley, an assist followed by his first goal for Celtic, a heavily deflected shot, and another in an impressive run of Celtic goals from outside the box.  Jota’s winner provided the third piece of evidence from Celtic that you need to buy a ticket to win a prize.  His shot bounced off the ground, over the keeper and below the bar; impossible to defend.

It was interesting to see our new and fabulous midfield subdued by a Scott Brown controlled Aberdeen midfield for parts of the second period.  He is well off his peak but still has the muscle memory.  Sterner tests lie ahead, few opponents will be as ill-prepared as Newco and Motherwell.

    Right to jury trial!!

    Like Assange?

Like priti’s not so pretty readjustment of the whole UK legal system to define what is british and what and who is not?

    it is a wreck.

Any pointers as to which ‘union’/law making govt body has a history of negating the right to jury trial??

    Toughie that.

    Good 3 Celtic goals.enjoyed that

Agree on context. Both in terms of not decrying a poor 20 minute spell (or strong performance from scott brown inspired aberdeen) nor getting ahead of ourselves after some good wins and great performances.

As you’ve mentioned, still some twists in this season, I’d think.

Our defense remains fairly robust, though doesn’t seem to have same strength in depth as midfield etc.

Cool heads and warm hamstrings required

    Whataboutery isn’t cutting it.

    How about answering the questions?

Or maybe explain why you won’t or can’t.

Is it because, having thought about it, you realise that your approach leads to tyranny?

  5. 3 great celtic wins in a week, 10 goals for 2 against.

Overtake the league leaders by giving them a skelping.

    and yet ……………

    hhhmmm.

  6. OK.

i don’t find a unionist using the word tyranny in a supportive way ironic at all.

That’s superb. the accumulated odds, of 6 victories, would have been approx 6 or 7/1. Turkeybhoy may know exactly. That’s tremendous.

A big well done to Ange, the players and the staff.

  8. Why am i more nervous being 1 point ahead than 6 points behind?

I was still confident we COULD win the league from 6 points behind so it isn’t because I had thrown the towel in at Christmas . Weird.

In any event, the lead could change hands a few times in the next few weeks we need to prepare ourselves not to implode if it happens

    Ok.

So thus far we’ve had whataboutery followed by your slam dunk argument, throwing in the word unionist.

But still no answer as to whether or not you want to abolish jury trials or reduce the burden of proof in criminal cases.

You’ll understand why I might draw a particular inference from that.

    Enjoyed your post.

I’d respectfully disagree with one small bit.

“Up to the split we have 4 home games – Dundee, St Mirren, Ross County + St Johnstone – all of whom will park the bus; and 3 away – Hibs, Livi & Sevco. I don’t fancy the last 2 of these at all”

I do fancy these last 2.

We lost 1-0 at both venues almost half a year ago when we were a totally different outfit.

And could have drawn or won both or either.

I see these as opportunities to put things right.

  11. St Stivs,

Why bother?.Ernie only ever answers a question, with more questions, but you know this.

Your 3:15pm post reminded me of this:

With William Hill,Celtic are favourites to win the League but Sevco are favourites to win the Cup.

Anyone know why that would be?

Does a one point lead make that big a difference to the odds?

  17. Hot smoked

It might be something to do with the odds they give for us winning the treble.

One in the bag and favourite for the league.

    Or maybe I’m talking rubbish.

  18. Turkeybhoy

    Ernie.

    You are a unionist

    ###

To the extent that I think Scotland would be better remaining as part of the UK, yes.

    So what?

Hardly a noteworthy or remarkable think for a Celtic fan to believe.

It’s been the view held by the vast majority of Scotland based Celtic fans since the club was founded.

    What’s your point?

Do you even have a point?

  21. We go marching on

Only got a chance to watch 5 minutes of highlights but a second win this season away to Aberdeen is never to be scoffed at. And as Paul notes, Jota is turning into a right nightmare for them.

Anthony Ralston deserves credit, great build up play with Abada, for a superb cross he puts in, in the early minutes which Maezda got to but couldn´t direct. Kieran Trippier would have admired it.

Reading back some of the comments on here later, I concur. I noticed that in the highlights there was no lead up to the two Aberdeen free kicks and I immediately thought, “Aha! Collum and media collusion”

Celtic are showing a great, “not shaken, but stirred” attitude this season when they concede goals, I´m thinking back to the League Cup Final as well. A healthy, winning mentality can emerge from that.

I disagree Madmitch that questioning the shortbread media and challenging football authorities, ie SFA, has become a parody. The TV pundits run scared of referees so I think they will brush it under the carpet every time. Leaving the usual suspect to be the official voice on anything to do with refereeing since time began. I give you, Craig ” I once protested at a game at Ibrox, haven´t I told you” Levein.

Still buzzing we beat Hearts the other week.

  22. No.you are a unionist

No ‘to extent of this or that,’any duality, historical amnesia, context set by a unionist pash,

    You are a unionist.

Why does a scot, wishing to cede from said union anger you? Glad of that.am more interested in playin Ben Doaks here

  23. Back to football. Is Collum just a bad referee or what. I know many feel he is anti Celtic and I have expressed that at times. But I feel we are in the midst of a period where refs in this country are totally biased or extreme!y poor. Was Collin not among those whom question were asked about their ability by clubs in Europe?

Incidentally who are we playing on Sunday? Received a communication from Celtic Ticket Office saying we were playing Faith Rivers? Anyone know they are from?

  24. Three mid week games away to Tynecastle and Pittodrie with Sevco at Celtic Park sandwiched in between. 9 points. Top of the league.

I’m definitely in the optimist camp today. Despite prematch talk of an easy win, I’d little doubt that Pittodrie was going to be a war. One which we won.

    12 to go.

  25. My friends in Celtic,

Jota’s goal was not offside says Dermot Gallagher .

    That good enough for me.
