Improving performance. Lessons from US sport

921

Following on from our discussion yesterday about adopting one or two of the techniques the enormously successful GB Olympic cycling team there are other areas where a technical advantage can be sought.

Football is awash with metrics these days.  Clubs know things about their players they never even wondered about 10 years ago, leading to more informed decisions.  It is probably no exaggeration to suggest that a club like Celtic will have some information on thousands of players.  At the top level, much of this information will be fresh in the minds of coaches and scouts, and will easily be recorded on a database, but scouting permeates through youth football.  Acquiring and assimilating information on the many hundreds of players on view each month is an information challenge.

The US sports were early to get on top of this problem.  SportsBoard is a iPad-based data capture and management app which enables coaches and scouts to record information on players (their own players and others) as they watch the game.  Data is uploaded from the iPad to a cloud-based database.  Information and comment on each player or opposing team can then easily be analysed.

The alternative would be to scour through unstructured notes without any way of controlling the up-flow of information.

The app has also been used to provide instant metrics to first team squads.  Players can get home from training, login and see how their performance was rated that day, allowing them to adjust their own target for the next session.  I spoke to the designer, Gregg Jacobs, who has received a ton of media coverage in the US over the last two years.  He told me this was about providing “more meaningful feedback”.   Take a look at the Assessment and Contact Management features, which has screenshots of the ‘soccer’ app.

So this week we’ve covered orthopaedic pillows on tour and leg heaters from the GB cycling team, as well as a scouting management and instant metrics system from US sports, all low-cost and designed to reduce risk and improve performance.

Should we do it?

If Hoops gets the shout from Spurs- he will need to go. I doubt he’d make it there mind you.

  4. Skal I’m not rubbishing your post. I am grateful to you for pointing out AM and GH holiday together. I take your word on that point.

I hope you’re not offended that I checked AM’s statement. I did so is because I’m likely to bury your point in my memory so I wanted to verify it to the letter.

I’m more than a wee bit sensitive to paraphrasing when it might change the complexion of someone’s statement. I’m confident that was not your intention.

It is not meant as a direct reply, more of a piss take on his insecurities.

It is hard to work out whether to ignore the stuff and go on talking to others in the hope he gets bored.

The downside to that is that his racist filth gets left unchallenged.

All I’m saying is Vic could very well be at his career height in terms of saleability….as painful as it feels now may be the optimal price for Vic.

Look should Gary Hooper decide he’s done enough at Celtic and he leaves this window and gives us a right few quid then he goes with all of us knowing the boy did well for us and he gave his all while playing in the shirt.

No one can ask him to do any more or less whether he goes now or in the summer but he will go.

The thing is regardless of the fee, should he leave now Celtic must use that money to buy a replacement because the forward line without Hooper is dismal in my view.

Miku and Bangura are useless and neither should be at Celtic come June.

Tony Watt is learning and cannot be expected to fire in the goals that would win us a title and a possible treble on his own.

Samaras scores 10 a season if he is lucky

    Lassad has 3 goals

Not enough to see us through to May.

Anthony Stokes IS capable of filling Hooper’s shoes BUT:

    a. Will he be fit and stay that way?

    b. He is out of contract soon – does he have a future with Celtic?

    c. Is he in the manager’s plans?

    d. Are the off – field problems going to be an on-field problem?

Quite frankly, Hooper is the best man to put the ball in the net who we have and replacing him will not come cheap for someone as effective unless John Park has someone up his sleeve but January is notorious for getting in quality.

A loan player may suffice but it is still a gamble.

Charlie Austin is not going to come for anything less than 5M if English markets are anything to go by. Would Peter Lawwell sanction this? I seriously doubt it.

Jonny Russell to me is the only sensible choice if we want someone who can do it at SPL level as the money would be right and the boy looks to me like he could make the step up. There are no other SPL strikers worth comment (not even Griffiths).

Should Hooper stay all this is academic BUT in my view it is a huge gamble if we let him go and get no one in.

Of course there are genetic differences, and if you talk about them folk get uneasy.

Dutch people are generally taller than pygmies.

Aboriginal Aussies generally last longer in the sun than Clydebank folk.

On build, I would think that Sutton was fitter than Hartson later in his career.

But was that build, or temperament?

    Or are they linked?

The Girl with the Dragon tatoo (Swedish) – 85/100 Brilliant. The only one to watch.

    And I’ll add:

Life Of Pi – 80/100 Not as mystical as the book but utterly beautiful in 3D.

Lincoln – 75/100 surprisingly better than I expected. Has all familiar biographic traits but adds great tension and gravitas by being mainly based around the month before America’s crucial slavery vote.

Dredd – 88/100 Pine for the days of Dirty Harry, Mad Max, Escape From New York, Terminator, Robocop? It’s all here, an incredible surprise in this PC future we live in. Relentless cool, uncompromising ultra-violence; they don’t make ’em like this any more but thank God someone did. It’s retro sci-fi murderous brilliance. Sequel please!

I was on a wee break which ended in an almighty drinking session and then a see you next Tuesday of a journey back to London yesterday. 3 hrs on the tarmac in France. 3 hrs Gatwick to my place. Made bearable by a Scottish head of cabin crew who dealt with the aggressive complaints it in that easy, dismissive, seen it all before way which I often envy in gay men.

Followed by another almighty drinking session.

Agree with you about Spurs fans being delusional.

They actually believe they have the biggest worldwide support of any other club in the UK. I lived in North London in the 80s and that was their general consensus. No amount of evidence could disabuse them of that ridiculous notion.

I used to watch Spurs then and saw them win the FA Cup twice, including that memorable 3-2 replay victory over Man City when the REAL football fans got tickets. What a party that was.

We were all pish, but this wee guy was all talk and bling.

Anyway, his tee shot at Hill 60 only made it half way up, so he heads of into the jungle in a really bad mood to look for his ball.

He finds it (or some other ball) and is so pissed off he swings at it without taking the bag of clubs off his back.

At the top of the back swing he loses his balance and rolls all the way to the bottom of Hill 60.
