Improving performance. Lessons from US sport

921

Following on from our discussion yesterday about adopting one or two of the techniques the enormously successful GB Olympic cycling team there are other areas where a technical advantage can be sought.

Football is awash with metrics these days.  Clubs know things about their players they never even wondered about 10 years ago, leading to more informed decisions.  It is probably no exaggeration to suggest that a club like Celtic will have some information on thousands of players.  At the top level, much of this information will be fresh in the minds of coaches and scouts, and will easily be recorded on a database, but scouting permeates through youth football.  Acquiring and assimilating information on the many hundreds of players on view each month is an information challenge.

The US sports were early to get on top of this problem.  SportsBoard is a iPad-based data capture and management app which enables coaches and scouts to record information on players (their own players and others) as they watch the game.  Data is uploaded from the iPad to a cloud-based database.  Information and comment on each player or opposing team can then easily be analysed.

The alternative would be to scour through unstructured notes without any way of controlling the up-flow of information.

The app has also been used to provide instant metrics to first team squads.  Players can get home from training, login and see how their performance was rated that day, allowing them to adjust their own target for the next session.  I spoke to the designer, Gregg Jacobs, who has received a ton of media coverage in the US over the last two years.  He told me this was about providing “more meaningful feedback”.   Take a look at the Assessment and Contact Management features, which has screenshots of the ‘soccer’ app.

So this week we’ve covered orthopaedic pillows on tour and leg heaters from the GB cycling team, as well as a scouting management and instant metrics system from US sports, all low-cost and designed to reduce risk and improve performance.

Should we do it?

If Hoops is set on a move then, at around £8 million, we have to accept this inevitability. If it does happen then, for once, the club need to make a quality replacement a greater priority than turning a profit.

Charlie Austin would likely be the sort of like-for-like replacement required. He will command a significant fee, most of what would be raised were Gary to depart. That spend would need to be sanctioned in my opinion if we are to ensure ‘Hoopergate’ has a win-win outcome…

BTW am I the only person guiltily excited at the possibility of Austin in the hoops? I know we sre far better off if Gary stays but can’t help that ‘grass is greener’ yearn for change, sigh…

lucky man. i have a 90 min commute every day.

I think hooper wants to stay til summer. however if we get a bid of £8M + i think the decision will be made for him.

  3. Dont think we will go for charlie austin if gary goes. He is too expensive. i think we will buy someone from lower english or a foreign league around £2m.

Interested to see the royal with questionable parentage boasting he fired on the Taleban from a fortified Apache helicopter.

Funnily enough I was minded of some of Dominic Behan’s lyrics when I read it…….

Come tell us how you slew

Those brave Arabs two by two

Like the Zulus they had spears and bows and arrows,

How you bravely slew each one

    With your sixteen pounder gun

And you frightened them poor natives to their marrow.

  5. Morning,

Looking forward to the game tonight. Time to see how Lassad, Stokes and Watt play in partnerships.

  6. Cant understand any Celtic supporter adding to the speculation of us losing Gary Hooper. He is worth his weight in gold to us in Europe at the minute. Celtic seem determined to keep him at least until the summer. That is good enough for me.

  7. Morning all!

Hoops is staying put – at least until the summer!

How do I know – Owen Coyle’s granny says so!

    That’s how!

  8. Morning from a dank and drizzly east manc…..how the weather up there in east glesga?? No danger to tonight game I hope!

Thought the holy goalie looked a bit more like his old self last night … Nice to see …. A few more games under his belt and he might just turn out to be the Bhoy that we remember so fondly

    Hail hail

  9. This from the opening of the ” impartial” BBC`s site this morning:

” Celtic’s Fraser Forster is likely to miss out with a stiff neck. Efe Ambrose is on African Nations Cup duty with Nigeria and Kelvin Wilson is suspended.

Adam Matthews and Kris Commons are minor doubts, while James Forrest and Paddy McCourt are still out.

Dundee United have midfield pair Stuart Armstrong (family illness) and Richie Ryan (hamstring) back after missing the victory at Kilmarnock.

Defender Brian McLean is free from suspension for the trip to Celtic Park.”

So, we have seven possibly missing whilst Utd are at full strength.

Add to that that Hooper ,Wanyama and Kayal will have gone for a pittance to minor EPL/ Championship clubs and we will be lucky to field a team tonight.

Most people on here can see through the MSM in Scotland and try hard to guide those who still buy/listen away from that practice.

The MSM has Hooper leaving and too many on here are accepting that as a fact.It isn`t.

Might I also add that Gary had a good game on Saturday. There have been a few games where he was less than good . The MSM did not have him leaving after those games. He plays well and suddenly he is for the off. See a connection?

Don`t do their work for them.

  10. Let me put it another way.

CQN was started to combat the bias of the MSM. People who regurgitate the MSM nonsense are not offering opinions and harming the raison d`etre of CQN.

  11. JJ -I agree but when Neil and Johann publicly comment on a bid for Hooper for example,it’s up for a debate IMO.

  12. yup….lazy journalism seems to be getting a foothold. Read it in the rags and then come on here to slaughter our club and the player. Lazy.

    Seen django last night…good show.

I only heard about the newroom lately heard its really good.. How does it compare with breakin bad and the sopranos?

sorry Imissed your post last night.

Newsroom is like breakin bad and the sopranos in that it is addictive. Good story lines which deal with real issues and they way they get reported. Jeff Daniels plays a good part as the anchorman and it can be quite funny. Another one to look out for it Southland, a bit slow on the uptake but it eventually gets there.

  14. What’s up with Watt?

Not even on the bench on Saturday, and not injured – bewildering. Amidst all the Hooper hoo-ha, Watt still has the best goals/assists per min in the squad (and no, I’m not saying that means he’s better).

Is it an ego thing? Is Lenny trying to quash any latent head-swelling side-effects from his winner the night we felled Barca? Or is it a case of being careful with the toll games can take on a developing young player?

Whatever it is, get him back in the team asap.

    For tonight –

  15. What I found amazing about the MSM was when Sevco lost to Stirling, it was a fair trawl thru the BBC website to find out. There was no report up for about 4 hours.

I would have thought this was major news in Scottish football. Now, every match as long as they win is treated like a Champions League semi final. Even when they’re 20 points ahead and the league is in the bag.

Advice needed from Auld Reekie based Bhoys.

In the capital today and would like to catch the game later in the pub. I saw on Celtic Bars the Edinburgh Unversity CSC meets at Dropkick Murphy’s to catch the supporters bus. Is this the best option for the telly too?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.
