Improving performance. Lessons from US sport

921

Following on from our discussion yesterday about adopting one or two of the techniques the enormously successful GB Olympic cycling team there are other areas where a technical advantage can be sought.

Football is awash with metrics these days.  Clubs know things about their players they never even wondered about 10 years ago, leading to more informed decisions.  It is probably no exaggeration to suggest that a club like Celtic will have some information on thousands of players.  At the top level, much of this information will be fresh in the minds of coaches and scouts, and will easily be recorded on a database, but scouting permeates through youth football.  Acquiring and assimilating information on the many hundreds of players on view each month is an information challenge.

The US sports were early to get on top of this problem.  SportsBoard is a iPad-based data capture and management app which enables coaches and scouts to record information on players (their own players and others) as they watch the game.  Data is uploaded from the iPad to a cloud-based database.  Information and comment on each player or opposing team can then easily be analysed.

The alternative would be to scour through unstructured notes without any way of controlling the up-flow of information.

The app has also been used to provide instant metrics to first team squads.  Players can get home from training, login and see how their performance was rated that day, allowing them to adjust their own target for the next session.  I spoke to the designer, Gregg Jacobs, who has received a ton of media coverage in the US over the last two years.  He told me this was about providing “more meaningful feedback”.   Take a look at the Assessment and Contact Management features, which has screenshots of the ‘soccer’ app.

So this week we’ve covered orthopaedic pillows on tour and leg heaters from the GB cycling team, as well as a scouting management and instant metrics system from US sports, all low-cost and designed to reduce risk and improve performance.

Should we do it?

  1. I can’t see any upside for either Hoops or Celtic if he left now. Any potential loss of earnings by not signing a higher salary contract elsewhere would be offset by his future sign on fee and Celtic would offset the drop in transfer value against the benefit of Hoops’ participation over the remainder of the season.

If his heart & head are really elsewhere, let him go in the summer with our best wishes and gratitude.

Did anyone read Michael Grants article in the herald yesterday? I thought it was very interesting and confirmed what I have suspected for many years now.

I hear what you are saying but Neil and Johann simply say we`ve had a bid (and we are not accepting it). That has been translated by the MSM as, effectively, accepted, sold and Celtic are in dire straits. That`s what they do, perhaps necessarily f0r circulation purposes, but my grouse is with those who swallow it and repeat it on here.

  4. I’m sure Hooper’s agent is happy with the media stories around. Puts his client in a strong position and potentially alerts other clubs. Always remember that agents make more cash when their player moves than when he signs a new contract with the current club.

Unless there are injuries, why change the team that played so well on Saturday? Sammi had his best home league game of the season (as did the team) and Ledley needs game time after injury.

Watt probably missing because Stokes is back and we generally, where possible, go with 2 defenders, 2 midfielders & 2 strikers on the bench.

  6. JJ-Thanks for reply,a concrete bid is no longer speculation,it’s worthy of comments IMO.I agree the bollox we get fed daily by the MSM is lazy journalism to coin a phrase. The Hooper bid is interesting as we will get far more money now than summer IF he is to be sold, with a CL last 16 game on the horizon.A conundrum.HH.

I may be wrong but I’m sure young Watt admitted that he can be lazy when it comes to training. Having talent is a bonus but you still need to work hard to get into the first team and impress your manager.

The Moose is a clown. Unless its West Ham he is clueless and knows nothing.

Grant Holt? Not a Celtic type signing. Decent enough player but doesn’t tick any of the boxes we tend to look for these days.

Hooper’s deal with his current agent ends this month. Looks to me like his agent is trying to force a deal this month to make some money hence all the lies to various media outlets.

  12. For a media who seem obsessed with attendances this year I find it surprising there has been no mention of which match housed the biggest attendance in the UK over the weekend. Wonder where that could have been then?

Thanks I’ll double check. Even better, might just have to abandon the family and jump on the bus.

  14. We don’t want other teams surplus players unless they are of better quality than what we have.

Grant Holt? No thanks. Just pay us in cash for the full amount please if you want to deal.

We can scout our own players. We are rather good in that area.

TalkSPORT are making this story run and run because they have an English striker of some quality playing in Scotland. They want him in England so they can talk about how great he is every week.

  15. Vancouver Whitecaps have announced that Barry Robson is to leave the club.

After making a big impression in his early days at the club Robson fell out of favour with the Canadian media suggesting that the departure was engineered by the club rather than the player.

    Wish Barry all the best.

I don’t normally read msm tosh, but he was talking about big English clubs coming up to Scotland and poaching young talented players before we have even heard of them. It is still on the herald website if you want to read it.

  17. Hooper would be a fool to move this month. I think his head has been turned and besides he’s never seemed the brightest. Sell him in the summer if he won’t sign a new deal.

Not sure DropKicks show the matches. I will enquire for you today.

The Uni bus leaves from there because the IB went really down hill and they were no longer welcome to be honest. The Hibs mob seem to be ocupying it these days.

They had flirted with Malones but the games stopped being shown in there as the rowdy behaviour of celtic fans was not in line with their tourist and student clientle. Doesn’t make much sense to me. They also hosted the Wolfe Tones and had a sign up saying no football colours! Bonkers

Boycotted the overpriced Malones since they stopped showing the football (Celtic) matches. I have no idea if they have changed their mind.

The Sports bar at Waverley is decent for watching the fitba. They have plenty screens and is Tim friendly.

For me, Samaras is the best player at Celtic, but so far Hooper and Watt have looked the best strike combination in 4-3-1-2 (the 1st half of the 5-0 v St Johnstone), with Commons given the ‘roving role’ rather than conventional no.10. In the absence of Efe, this is Celtic’s best formation, and until proved otherwise, that would be my pick, so no place for Sammi.

  21. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Scott Brown may well not have understood Celtic when he joined us and he might not have been a Celtic man. However,he sure gets it now and is a committed Celt saying that Hooper would be good value at 20 million can only help Celtic to get a few extra pounds if they sell him this window good on you Scottie Bhoy. 23. Don’t know what happened there .

Anyway , Gary Hooper plays for Celtic until Celtic tell me different .

Forget the gossips and the mischief makers who would do our club harm .

  24. Kayal33

Saturday’s game was for me, the best team performance of the season, and if we’re just talking SPL, I agree with you – it was Sammi’s best performance – he was outstanding. That needs to be counterbalanced by looking at the way players combine and, as I said to goldstar10, so far Hooper and Watt have looked the best.

    I realise it’s odd, but there’s method in’t!

Brown lives not far from me. See him in the supermarket some times. He seems very settled and I have not heard any stories of him being out in Edinburgh at all.

I think he has matured a lot since his kid was born and his performances have done so on the park as a result. He has won me over but I’m not convinced he is a captain yet. I prefer my captain to be a driving force like Roy Aitken but maybe the game has changed too much since those days.

Brown comes across as a very nice guy and is popular with his team mates and international colleagues. That tells you a lot about any guy. He must be doing something right.

Interesting. I’m more of a believer in how players fare when it really matters (and let’s face it, what else have we fans got to go on?), but from his pronouncements, it’s clear how much training matters to Lenny.

Don’t you agree that Saturday was the best home league performance of the season with the Hooper, Samaras, Commons front three particularly good. The best in terms of movement since Motherwell away when Forrest played instead of Samaras.

Tony Watt is still best utilised as an impact sub than in the starting 11. The fact he didn’t even make the 18 on Saturday would suggest the manager may be taking him out the squad for a few weeks now that Stokes is back

  28. Up over goal- fair enough, bud. Don’t know why big TW isn’t featuring. The 5-0 game (the one v St Mirren?) Tony was a real handful that day, Mair and McAusland took turns at booting the crap out of him.

Still think Sammy will be the first name on the team sheet tonight.
