Improving performance. Lessons from US sport

921

Following on from our discussion yesterday about adopting one or two of the techniques the enormously successful GB Olympic cycling team there are other areas where a technical advantage can be sought.

Football is awash with metrics these days.  Clubs know things about their players they never even wondered about 10 years ago, leading to more informed decisions.  It is probably no exaggeration to suggest that a club like Celtic will have some information on thousands of players.  At the top level, much of this information will be fresh in the minds of coaches and scouts, and will easily be recorded on a database, but scouting permeates through youth football.  Acquiring and assimilating information on the many hundreds of players on view each month is an information challenge.

The US sports were early to get on top of this problem.  SportsBoard is a iPad-based data capture and management app which enables coaches and scouts to record information on players (their own players and others) as they watch the game.  Data is uploaded from the iPad to a cloud-based database.  Information and comment on each player or opposing team can then easily be analysed.

The alternative would be to scour through unstructured notes without any way of controlling the up-flow of information.

The app has also been used to provide instant metrics to first team squads.  Players can get home from training, login and see how their performance was rated that day, allowing them to adjust their own target for the next session.  I spoke to the designer, Gregg Jacobs, who has received a ton of media coverage in the US over the last two years.  He told me this was about providing “more meaningful feedback”.   Take a look at the Assessment and Contact Management features, which has screenshots of the ‘soccer’ app.

So this week we’ve covered orthopaedic pillows on tour and leg heaters from the GB cycling team, as well as a scouting management and instant metrics system from US sports, all low-cost and designed to reduce risk and improve performance.

Should we do it?

Your right about big Kelvin Wilson

I reckon he’s been outstanding at home and Europe this season,a complete turnaround from last season were many fans wanted rid of him,I’m always of the opinion that players should get at least a season especially if injured for a length of time in the first season

SSN are getting their info from Talksport, of whom i don’t think they’ve got a transfer ‘exclusive’ correct for a long time.

Hooper has been offered a pay package that puts him on a level with Broonie, Ledley etc

My reading of the Gary Hooper situation is quite simple

Celtic have made him an improved offer. If he wants a new contract at CP he must sign that now

If he doesn’t want to sign a new deal he should go now, we must take maximum income from transfer fees. Talk of leaving in the summer instead would mean his transfer value would drop significantly and affect our ability to replace him

Where he goes doesn’t worry me, once he has left then he has gone. Very few go on to better things after Celtic, although a great many do earn more money.

Why Norwich? the same reason he left scunny to come to Glasgow, Probably because they pay more.

The point about the statues is that nobody now knows or cares who they are.

They represent what the worthies once thought was worthy and in that sense they give us an insight into an aspect of Glasgow’s history. They are in themselves historical artifacts and for that reason I’d leave them be.

I understand Gary Hooper has been told he’s staying at #Celtic. Offers to date not acceptable.

  6. I wonder does Houston’s announcement that he “can’t take the club any further”, have any connection to the possibilty of losing Russell and Mackay-Stevens?

  7. Hooper is on the verge of an England call up if he moves to Norwich he will be on say £32,000 per week.If money is his motivation then wait bang in a few for England and generate more demand for his signature and more of a weekly wage.Or is he so lacking in his own ability that he thinks he can’t do it for England and is happy to sign for a club heading for a relegation battle. It may turn out that the England match hasn’t come quick enough for both Hooper and Celtic to show his true value on the open market.

After having a little look on Celtics YouTube channel to get away from all the Gary Hooper rumours and MSM fantasy, I came across a funny clip i thought i’d share.

  10. Manchester United acquires BskyB’s one-third stake in MUTV

LONDON: Manchester United, one of the most popular and successful sports teams in the world, today announced the acquisition of the one-third minority equity stake in Manchester United Television (‘MUTV’) from BskyB (Sky). MUTV is now a wholly-owned group subsidiary.

As part of its long-term digital media plans, Manchester United has made the strategic acquisition of Sky’s stake in MUTV in order to own 100% of the content production and distribution capabilities of this business.

MUTV was launched in 1998 as a three-way joint venture, with UK broadcasters ITV and Sky as equal partners. Since then, MUTV has developed considerable in-house expertise and Manchester United bought ITV’s one-third equity stake in November 2007. This latest acquisition is a natural progression and is indicative of the Club’s desire to have full control of the content generating and distribution capabilities across all of its businesses.

MUTV is available in 57 countries around the world. It is accessed in the UK and Ireland by subscription on satellite and cable platforms; and in the rest of the world through a combination of subscription or as programming blocks purchased by international broadcasters.

Richard Arnold, Commercial Director of Manchester United, said: “The acquisition of Sky’s stake is great news for all of our fans who watch us around the globe, MUTV, its staff and the Club.

“We look forward to continuing to enhance our media proposition and distribution capabilities in the years to come; and delivering some of the best and most compelling content to our 659m followers.

“Sky has been an active and highly-valued partner since the channel’s inception and has helped to build the best and most watched club football channel in the world. We will continue to have a close relationship with Sky in the future.”

MUTV employs approximately 60 staff and currently operates from offices in central Manchester, a studio at Carrington (the Club’s training ground) and from facilities within Old Trafford stadium.

Houston isn’t prepared to take a wage cut, that’s why he’s leaving.

For a media who seem obsessed with attendances this year I find it surprising there has been no mention of which match housed the biggest attendance in the UK over the weekend. Wonder where that could have been then?

Hooper doesn’t have to go now – he has 18 months remaining on his contract.

The summer is the time to sell him if he doesn’t want a new deal. Holding off for four or five months will not make a significant difference in the price. One goal at the very top level against Juventus is likely to increase his value if anything – the more Champions League goals Hooper scores then more Celtic can ask for.

It’s all about supply and demand. If a top club in England is hit with injuries to their top strikers between now and the end of the window there hand may be forced. We could possibly get top dollar for our front man.

By my reckoning the following clubs are out the running at this stage.

Arsenal – Hooper would be cup tied for CL games

Man United – Same reason as Arsenal

    Man City – Plenty strikers

Chelsea – Same reason as Man City

Liverpool – Have just bought Sturridge and appear to be happy with what they have this window.

That leaves either poor clubs that would not be a step up. Norwich, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Stoke, Fulham, Southampton, Newcastle, QPR etc.

It also leaves the middle to top of the table clubs like Everton and Spurs.

Would Everton or Spurs pay top dollar for a Scottish based striker? Who knows?

We are in a strong position and unless there are injuries I reckon that Hooper would be better staying at Celtic and achieving some more medals and playing in Europe.

I keep hearing that Gary is changing agent shortly. I’m not sure if this is true or not. If it is true I think we can guess who is making all the stories hit the headlines regarding a move and him knocking back a new deal. That’s right his current agent who is looking for one last pay day out of his client before he moves camps. He is generating interest in his prize asset by releasing stories through his friends in the media. I’m sure he has been in contact with TalkSPORT regularly.

This leaves me with the assumption that Gary Hooper will sign a new deal with his new agent once that change happens or will leave in the summer. The player has never stated in the press he wants to leave and he has also not stated that he wants to stay. Why should he? It’s not his place to comment on speculation. It’s not affecting him on the pitch and that is where he is judged by the fans.

Keep putting the ball in the net and get playing for England. If you score for England it puts another £5m on his transfer fee and another £30k per week on his wages.

Makes sense to me for him to sit tight for the time being and I think Gary knows that.

    Bournesrecipe,

its good that Celtic are at least trying to understand what fans want

Is a pity that it took them so long to get there, them apparently being so wise and all

The ever decreasing circle is a situation that many have been forecasting

It’s not 100% of our own making but it’s there all the same, Lennys appointment was the one that has maybe slowed the decrease but only against the happy demise of the huns.

And yes you can call them that because they don’t exist any more

We can all point to what we believe to be the root cause

Probably, in truth it’s a combination of many factors for many folks

The proposed Football authorities solution appears to be play a few games against the likes of Partick and Morton instead of St Mirren and Ross County. Hardly thrilling stuff

The days of £30 to see us play many of scotlands “diddy teams” are gone. Failure to understand that will only result in more empty seats

IMO the cry for cheap standing terracing tickets will become overwhelming. The likes of these games can only command about £15 a head for the pay as you go fans
