“JOTA WHO?” That was the reaction of thousands of Celtic fans when it was announced the club had arranged a season-long loan deal with the 22-year-old winger.

Unless the supporter was an aficionado of all things Benfica or had been an avid follower of the fortunes of La Liga outfit Real Vallodolid, the name of Filipe Jota would have been basically unknown.

The youngster has shaken off the cloak of anonymity since his summer arrival with a series of eye-catching performances on both right and left wings as well as a brief stint of leading the line.

BY THE LEFT…Filipe Jota thumps in an effort at the Motherwell goal.

He was still playing in Spain during his temporary transfer when the Hoops beat St Johnstone 2-1 on February 14 this year, their last away success in domestic football until the visit to Pittodrie to take on former captain Scott Brown and his Aberdeen team-mates at the start of this month.

It was balanced at 1-1 with six minutes to go when Jota turned an Adam Montgomery left-wing cross behind Gary Woods for the winner.

And it was the flying flanker who got the ball rolling at Fir Park yesterday when he lashed in the opener in the 2-0 triumph over Motherwell.

Everyone knows the name Filipe Jota now.

CQN‘s top lensmen captured the exciting Portuguese raider in full flow yesterday.
