Inconceivable wifi debate, Supporter statements

453

I’ve a bit of experience at deploying wifi to stadiums at sports stadiums.  The business model is straightforward:

You offer free wifi access to spectators who otherwise would have trouble getting 3G or 4G access due to the short-term convergence of thousands of other spectators.

In return you capture spectators registration details, which you can subsequently use for marketing purposes.  You can also force visitors to a landing page after the login, which can carry advertising.  Finally, you can control access to premium event-related sites, like gambling.  The venue can prohibit access to betting sites apart from their (paying) betting partner.

This technology has been around for a while but the tools and processes to commercialise it are still relatively new.

Venues across the country are already doing all of the above, but we’re only at the beginning of how sports venues engage with the phone in the hands of their in-stadium spectators.  The venues control premium content – like replays of goals or key incidents, which they can use to entice stadium visitors to register, login and view adverts.  You can view a goal reply on stadium screens, but this technology would allow you to view incident whenever you want, from whatever camera angle you want – great if you’re stuck at one end of the ground and want to see an incident in the opposite penalty area.

Eventually you will be able to order snacks or buy shirts through the same app you use to view replays.  The possibilities are endless: view Benchcam to see who is doing what in the technical area, click on your adjacent Kioskcam to see if there’s a queue before leaving your seat.

Sizing an install is a straightforward process.  You start with the capacity of the venue, then estimate what percentage you’ll get to register, then estimate how many will want to access the internet simultaneously, then estimate their average bandwidth requirement.

From that you get an estimate of what throughput your access points need (and where they are needed), what routers you need, and the leased line bandwidth.  This exercise has been done in practically every town in the country.

It’s inconceivable # 1

It’s inconceivable that the supplier and customer have not gone through this sizing procedure.  There will be email trails confirming the process.

It’s inconceivable # 2

It’s inconceivable that a customer expects 100% of their maximum population to register, login and access the internet simultaneously.  Especially so if the customer already had a stadium wifi installation and was aware of visitor login profiles.  If they did, their supplier would size accordingly, but this would have been well covered during the preliminary conversations.

It’s inconceivable # 3

The deal Newco Rangers are trying to get out of was signed under then chief executive, Charles Green.  Star witness for the plaintiff would surely be the directors from the other side who instructed the deal:

Counsel: “Mr Green, as chief executive of Rangers International did you instruct our clients to install a wifi at Ibrox allowing around 10,000 users to simultaneously access the internet?”

Case closed.

The Association, the Affiliation and the Irish Association, by some distance the three largest supporters organisations, all issued statements condemning those who use pyrotechnics at Celtic games.

It’s difficult for any group of people counted in the tens or hundreds of thousands to self-police over decades.  One of the functions which makes this possible is that when self-criticism is needed, it happens.  There was no whatabouterry in these statements, no blaming the media, just the straightforward message about what this behaviour is doing to Celtic supporters.

I don’t know if these statements will make any difference (all points were previously known), but the wellbeing of the support depends no strong voices stepping forward at the right time, especially when they can be shouted down.

The 3rd Annual Celtic Supporter’s Féile takes place in Philadelphia from 29th-31st January, including a Tommy Burns Supper for the first time.  Events are based at The Plough & Stars, in the Old City section of Philadelphia, where Celtic supporters from all over the world will gather.

There’s live music and radio shows, a book launch and a Q&A with Supporters Liason Officer, John Paul Taylor.  $5 from each ticket also goes to the Foundation.

Book tickets for the Tommy Burns Supper here.  If you need accommodation, special rates are available at the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District with passcode: Celtic Group.

I think we all agree that the OB Act is badly written legislation, unnecessary (in the sense that other laws were already in place) unacceptable, and in many cases unenforceable. The rantings of an SNP MSP are on record, but not on the statute book. Now if you had referred to the actions of a minority Parliament in1553 I would have agreed with you.

  3. If ‘aggressive blessing’ has anything to do with the perpetrator’s freedom to practice their beliefs I’d be quite amazed. I can only recall seeing such a thing once. From one guy at Ibrox in 2003 (maybe 4). I doubt it’s something we really need to focus on tbh,

However the fact that it can indeed be used as a windup does say something about the opposition to fans at which it is aimed.

The OBFA is a disgrace and should be repealed but one of things that would be hard to level against it is that it’s anti-Catholic. In fact doing so may cause people to be less likely to listen to good reasons to bin it.

But then again life is not a popularity contest.

Thank god the board of Celtic (rip) see things the same way

  5. Jerry the SNP,knew they had to get the Catholic Church on side with the OB.

Do not know many Celtic supporters rely on it but just read that P&O have ended the Troon-Larne Ferry with immediate effect.

” Meanwhile, Deila confirmed captain Scott Brown is back running in training and is scheduled for a mid-February comeback following a knee injury.

And the Celtic boss confirmed there had been enquiries from several clubs to take forward Anthony Stokes on loan, with the Republic of Ireland striker having played only twice this season.”

I am fairly familiar with the OBaF Act. I submitted evidence to the Justice Committee at the time of its proposing, did some TV and Press on it, and have followed its progress into Law since.

    It’s legally ill-conceived, evidentially ill-considered, and ill-becomes a (purportedly) modern, progressive nation.

It’s all of these things, and it’s unnecessary to boot.

To describe it though as “anti-Catholic” peculiarly reflects the kind of thinking that came up with the idea in the first place.

You said the Catholic Church has a right of veto in the SP.

I asked you to clarify that statement by simply answering yes or no.

But lets save some time ……you know they dont, I know they dont ,as does everybody else. If you want to be taken seriously on a serious subject please refrain from making statements that are clearly risible.

Reminded me of Ginola, in a game in which France required only a draw, crossing the ball into the area instead of taking the ball to the corner flag in the last seconds of a World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria in Paris in 1994, only for their opponents to win the ball, go up the park and,of course, score, meaning no France at USA ’94.

*or Harry Harry failing to take the ball into the corner in the closing minutes of the SC Final, losing it and the ball being driven upfield where Jim Craig and Evan Williams got in a fankle leaving BFDJ the easy chance to nod the equaliser.

Leaving the ground that afternoon one of the punters in front of me said “wee Bertie widnae have lost that baw”.

Alls well that ends well though as we were treated tae the Jinky show 8 days later at the same venue.

Otherwise you’re a Quisling (or, indeed, a Donaldson, which is probably a more apt name, in the circumstances).

I have to say though that I find your attitude rather demeaning and insulting towards the Scottish people.

It’s as if they, and their society, can’t have their own endogenous faults or failings. Everything has to be blamed on the English or Westminster. Sorry, Westmonster.

I suppose that’s where nationalism gets you.

It’s all a bit sad really.

Who is pushing the Fletcher for Celtic another striker nearing the end of his career ( cole ) this doesnt fit in with our normal buy promising youngsters develop them and sell on. Fletcher if I am truthful is not a player I have ever been keen on but somone at Celtic is desperate to sign him.H.H.

  17. Joe Filippis Haircut on 13th January 2016 6:09 pm

Fletcher’s only 28, a lot younger than Cole. He’s also available on a free in the summer, a price that PL likes.

He’s also a massive upgrade on Ciftci.

  18. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Gary67. Unfortunately up to now anyone would be better than Cifti but that is not a reason for signing Fletcher. Also we have Cole we dont need another in my opinion striker nearer the end of his career than the beginning. We have collected many strikers over the last few seasons with Griffiths being the best and with Ronny preferring the one striker up front just how many strikers do we need at the club ? H.H.

He’s rubbish. He was rubbish the first time we were supposed to buy him as well.

    – ———

Think he might have been worth a punt the first time. Definitely wouldn’t want take him now.

  20. Hebcelt you are becoming a wee bit desperate. Your attempts at baiting me are a bit pitiful.

Jerry I was a bit loose with my language so of course they don’t have a veto. For you to hang onto it is what’s risible. However my points remain.

It’s funny that we have seen an upsurge in nationalism this evening.

I am quite surprised by those who claim that the OB is not anti Catholic. I didn’t make up what the SNP said when passing the bill. Nor did I make up the evening things up point against Celtic supporters.

Ah well. It’s funny what folk will abide with. Cognitive dissonance indeed.

I’m with you on that mate, but all in good time, right now we need a quick fix if possible, I wouldent do that to a young player, the team is young as it is, IMO.

Hi – no I was not aware that you had posted re Belfast Celtic.

I do not think for a moment that Celtic condone, or will condone, the “status quo”, if as we expect, the Ibrox inhabitants see no more sanctions from the powers that be.

We will be in a position, as we have in the past, of ‘like it or lump it’.

There is no ‘outball’ for us to move somewhere else.

    – See more at: http://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/inconceivable-wifi-debate-supporter-statements/comment-page-2/#comments

    =======

There may be no outball to play anywhere else but we sure as hell don’t have to like it or lump.

What we can do is use the hard evidence of skullduggery and cover up to make the like it or lump it attitude a part of the past.

In fact not to do so will be an abrogation of responsibility to the support and shareholders and unless some new evidence turns up that can explain or excuse the skullduggery, Celtic will be accountable to them.

It would be the irony to end all ironies if Celtic were ultimately to suffer from the scandal of the last 15 years, but worse it would be an act of stupidity not to take advantage of the situation to bring about what the game, not just Celtic alone, needs, which is transparent professional and honest governance accountable to the paying customer.

A London lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by an Irish Garda. He thinks that he is smarter than the cop because he is a lawyer, from London , and is certain that he has a better education than any paddy cop. He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the Garda’s expense!! Irish Garda says,’ License and registration, please.’ London Lawyer says, ‘What for?’ Irish Garda replies, ‘You didn’t come to a complete stop at the Stop sign.’ London Lawyer says, ‘I slowed down, and no one was coming.’ Irish Garda says, ‘You still didn’t come to a complete stop. License And registration, please.’ London Lawyer says, ‘What’s the difference?’ Irish Garda says, ‘The difference is, you have to come to complete stop, that’s the law. License and registration, please!’ London Lawyer says, ‘If you can show me the legal difference between ‘slow down’ and ‘stop’, I’ll give you my license and registration and you give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don’t give me the ticket.’ Irish Garda says, ‘Sounds fair. Exit your vehicle, sir.’ The London lawyer exits his vehicle. The Irish Garda takes out his baton and starts beating the crap out of the lawyer with it and says, ‘Do you want me to stop, or just slow down?’
