Inconsistency costs Celtic cups

1483

This time last year there was far too much talk about trebles on these pages.  Celtic were flying in all three competitions, having established a lead in the league, and were heading for a League Cup semi-final against Falkirk.  Falkirk were beaten but it took a late Anthony Stokes goal to make the game safe for Celtic.  The script was written; a final against Kilmarnock, who always bottled it against Celtic in Glasgow, and a successful run in the Scottish Cup was all that stood between us and the fourth treble in our history.

I’ve lost count of how many such trebles we’ve look forward to.  Football has a way of promising lots but it takes an exceptionally good and consistent team to win both cup competitions, as well as the league.  More often than not, great and dominant teams don’t win the treble.

Celtic are a great and exciting team but they have not been nearly consistent enough to win the treble this season.  We have lost two from eight home games and two from seven away.  Good enough to win the league but not to win two cups.

I watched a bit of St Mirren at home to Ross County before heading to Celtic Park last weekend.  They were far from impressive but no less so than when we beat them by seven goals in the SPL four years ago.  The following week the same team knocked us out of the Scottish Cup.

Sunday is one of the biggest games currently on the roster.  Raise your game, Celtic.

  1. Young Dallas should be banned from refereeing till the truth is out.

    His non appearance speaks volumes.

There is more much more to this story, it must be kept in the spotlight.

    cap doffed to K Shiels.

Dallas,s father will be busy trying to organise a refs strike from his cumfy office, wae his wee spokesman(could have used soooooooo many words there)at the front of the queue cheerleading. (IMHO)

Why was Dallas allowed to not attend a hearing when he was directly involved?

Is there a League Managers Association in Scotland, like England?

    If not, why not?

First meeting Dallas attended i believe

This meeting decided to uphold the report of on the day forth official Dallas, and dismiss the appeal of Shiels, at this meeting Shiels would not be able to cross examine Dallas, he would only be able to present his side of the case to the committee, tonight Shiels stated that the committee accepted their was a problem with the report of Dallas but still decided to uphold the Dallas version of events in his report, this is standard procedure with committees fearful of the consequences of ruling against referees

At the second meeting were Shiels would be given his punishment, it was Shiels lawyer who requested Dallas attend presumably to cross examine Dallas, as it was not an official request to attend Dallas was within his rights to refuse to go…………………my interpretation

  3. Should have read.

wae his wee spokesman(could have used soooooooo many words there) *COLLUM*at the front of the queue cheerleading. (IMHO)

  4. Tallybhoy, He could have been, I know he claims to have got pelters from many Catholics for the move and I have no doubt he did.

  5. Utter Pythonesque nonsense from the lard addict.

A ‘team’ of full time highly paid professionals, mibbery intact and rampant, playing at home against part-timers supposedly light years removed from the glorious hoverpitchers, and their manager, without a trace of irony has the brass neck to babble like a fool and the equally semi-literate msm spread this muck and expect everyone to accept it like holy writ?

How long? Really. How long does the word of football have to put up with these endless insults?

    May they implode…and soon.

  6. Is it true that Collum is the ref tomorrow?

If it is, look out for yet more ‘honest mistakes!’

    HH!!

  7. Evening all

Enjoyed the match from Windsor Park tonight – a first for everything. Reading the comments from Cork Celt and Tontine Tim about the demographics of the supports and players if various teams in the Irish League – can either of you ( or anyone else) confirm what I was told by an Aunt and Uncle who lived in Bangor until the mid 70s which was that although Linfield was always analogous to the RFC there was no club in Belfast comparable with Celtic in terms of background of support and that if anything Glentoran had by the late sixties the Belfast club which attracted the most support from the Catholic/Nationalist/Republican community and that the Reds were very much the poor relation of Belfast football with a tiny non Sectarian Support. I know that by the late 70s The Linfield/Glentoran derby was like a game between Glasgow Rangers and er Glasgow Rangers

Always feel a bit uneasy discussing such things but it struck me watching the match tonight. For the Reds fans going home tonight – take care.

Please excuse my use of the word sectarian to describe the support of Cliftonville ( past or present). Too much exposure to lazy Scottish journalism alas

either way dallas is now damaged goods ,sheils stopped short of saying he would be happy to see him ref a killie game in future, saying only that he would treat him the same as he treats any ref.

did you note sheils havin a wee dig about a refs strike ,canny quite remember how he put it but it was there

  9. lionroars67,

Ecen accepting your entirely plausible interpretation, te whole business appears to be ad hoc.

Shiels’ lawyer requesting attendance is the same as the manager requesting.

It goes back to the root cause of Scottish football’s ills…. The SFA.

The huns have merely been the beneficieries of their corruption.

  10. Glentoran came into existence following the demise of Belfast Celtic. I believe in the immediate years after their formation they did attract some of the former Belfast Celtic support because they were chief rivals to Linfield. (i.e. lesser of 2 evils) but they are based in Protestant East Belfast and my understanding is that their support is now predominantly Protestant.

  11. “Strong words Kenny ALMOST actionable”

Well sue him them McKendrick and let us hear dallas’s side in a court of law,(not Edinburgh please)

  13. 1 other wee belter when Shiels (note change of spelling) let out that 1 of the 3 man independent appeal panel had a wee sfa pin badge on .

  14. The Resident \m/O\m/ on

Explosive stuff with Kenny Shiels and I havnt even reached the part when the ex ref calls in yet

‘The evidence contradicts the original referee’s report’

This line Shiels quotes about the first disciplinary is key and seems to highlight Dallas’s guilt.

  15. Bobby Tait refereeing the Algeria v Togo game.

Thirteen minutes stoppabe time, when seven minutesvwould be correct.

    2- 0 Togo.

  16. Cork Celt.

Thats pretty much what I’d been led to believe 40 years ago- I thought Glentoran had been a nothing club until Belfast Celtic stopped playing in 1949 (?).

“they would only go on strike AGAIN”

In response to why dont yous (referees) go public on decisions,Question to McKendrick on refs speaking to managers after game.

McKendricks answer was it would be a media circus.

I had a very similar experience going through the SFA committees, in a case which involved a lying referee

Many people will recognise what happened to Shiels

I also ironically sat on a juvenile disciplinary committee judging cases from referees reports, some were laughable, the league secretary constantly reminded everyone that dismissing referees reports would lead to referees quitting the league, no referees no games of fitba…………………………………..referees carry considerable power and expect there reports to be treated like they have been written by GOD

  21. jimbo67

Regards Glentoran, in the fantastic year of 1967 John Colrain an Ex Celt was player manager of Glentoran and he led Glentoran to a famous 1-1 Draw against Benfica at the oval in a european cup match and in the return leg the Glens drew 0-0 with Benfica and went out on the away goals rule he also led them in America as the Detroit Cougars

Does the term “left footer” have a different meaning in Ireland than it does in Scotland?

  23. leftclicktic

thanks, knew there was a wee dig ,mckendrick came across as a bit of a bully but Shiels maintained he was letting it drop only on his own terms ie Im innocent but Im prepared to move on

  24. Lurgan 57

I knew that John Colrain had been with one of the Belfast teams ( obviously not Linfield) in the mid 60s but did not know which one . Thanks. That is some result against the Eagles.

Did Charlie Tully manage one of the Irish League teams around then. (Portadown)?
