Indisputable mood to bring in the New

1316

If you were lucky enough, like me, to enjoy a long Christmas holiday, I hope you had a good one.  I’m sure few of us are delighted to be back at it today but there’s an indisputable mood on the blog for bringing in the New.  A fresh start is needed and fortunately we’re at the start of the transfer window.

For Celtic most attention will be directed towards recruiting a striker who is capable of doing the business in the Champions League, not to overlook the important point of doing the business in Champions League qualifiers.  20-year-old Icelandic striker, Holmbert Fridjobsson, finally joins the club this month but although we’ll hopefully see plenty of the player this month he is surely considered ‘one for the future’.

One prolific striker does not solve all of Celtic’s issues, however.  The club remains acutely dependent on Kris Commons’ creativity (as well as goal scoring), which will become increasingly less-effective as opponents setup to inhibit him.  He needs a foil.

Since the annihilation in Barcelona Celtic have offered greater protection from midfield but with both full backs encouraged to overlap the midfield anchor role, previously occupied by Wanyama, becomes crucially important.  It also offers support to the strategy of allowing Commons a free role as an attacking midfielder.

Over the break, Archie MacPherson, Scotland’s greatest ever broadcaster, wrote an article for Celtic Quick News comparing two of Scotland’s greatest ever managers.  These debates are, of course, subjective, but the article provides a few objective points for consideration.  Archie has a totally unique range to deal with this question and is in no doubt as to who the master was.  Look out for the article next week, you’ll enjoy it – no guessing now.

Josh and some of the 16s played a bounce game v some the older Bhoys. Bangura thumped him and Josh said it hurt. But said its been “noted”

  2. Jude, Jelavic has a pattern when he arrives at clubs.

Scores a few goals, then disappears, what age is he now?

Not for me, but hey, if we sign him, I’ll be cheering when he scores, indeed, when he plays.

Doc, also agree on Jones, is 30 this year, but surprisingly has scored 88 goals in just over 300 games in England, not played much last 2 years, as has gone through a messy divorce, scored on Saturday, first game for a wee while.

Jelavic is approaching 29, and has scored over 110 goals in about 285 games, so 1 in just under 3, but, only about 10 goals in last 2 season of over 50 games, so 1 in 5

    Hope this helps

The agent, who approached the wife, has been on at her for the past week wanting her stuff, so she is half way there, she has to submit three paragraphs, which I have read and think they are superb, even though they are aimed at a female market, she will know soon enough.

    Hahahahaha….one of life’s little bonuses….

..and big Baldie nearly scored too….he seems to have good striking positioning ……. Hope NEIL plays him regularly now

  24. My friends in Celtic,

There is absolutely no doubting we need a striker, although I’m still hoping for vast improvements from our “projects” and particularly TW.

Ref Alfred Finnbogason : To me he is another gamble, not the ultimate finishing machine that would guarantee transformation of our European fortunes that some would have us believe.

Yes, if possible I would want him for £5 million, but before we get carried away lets ask ourselves some questions and review his record :-

In 2014 £5 million does not buy a recognised top notch striker. Why valued so low ?

He is 26 in three weeks time, not a youngster.

He finished a 6 month loan with Helsingborgs in 2012. We are well aware first hand that a loan deal at that age is for a reason and basically he was not a first team pick.

His last three clubs, Lokeren, Helsingborgs and Heevesnveen all have lower expectations and pressures than us.

His international debut only came against the Faroe islands in 2010. 19 caps and 4 goals for the Iceland team is not exceptional.

I am not saying we should not sign him if possible, but what I am saying is that he may just not be our messiah that many think. Remember Harald Brattbakk.

And yes I am aware that we have to speculate to accumulate, but we need to ensure that whoever we sign will hit the park running.

    HH, Always in Celtic.

  25. Sorry its an old joke, i was teeing it up for someone

2 million wouldn’t buy Sammi…..and im one of them.
