Inexplicable talk

647

There can be no doubt that Brendan Rodgers has played his cards very publicly this week.  I don’t know the ins-and-outs of it, but it cannot be over losing a player he could not promise a starting position to.  I’m not buying that, there has to be something we are not seeing.

We have a modestly important league game tomorrow and a hugely important Champions League qualifier on Tuesday, so between now and Wednesday, at the earliest, it would be preferable not to allow this week of internally created negativity to drag on into yet another press conference.

We are also trying to convince Dedryck Boyata and Moussa Dembele to sign new contracts.  You and I know that talk getting in the way these objectives is as inexplicable as it is indulgent.

  1. BMCUWP I agree with your post above.

I also think you are correct re an internal rift, like many if not all Celtic supporters I do not want Brendan to leave. PL or whoever need to just acquire signing Ach we all no what needs to happen

I wish it was tomorrow at 11.30am so I could get to the pub with mates and have that buzz of discussing what team we will start and then watching them play.

Probably. But Calvin Miller is not a left back.

Give him a ball, see what he can do with it. He will be unlikely to break into our team in his favoured positions though.

Send him down south for a year or so,he’s still a kid,let him keep beach balls off opponents in a telephone box

Oxford United would kill for him.

Are you implying that Brendan is being indulgent? Seems to be the implication of your final line.

If that is the intent of your comment, I find that indulgent on your part.

We have big games all the time. Is BR supposed to sit and keep quiet about such important matters simply because we have a big game on the horizon? There would be no point in him making his frustrations known after the window has shut as I presume one aim of his articulation is that same might have triggered the Board into action.

BR has every right to call the PLC out at this stage. Indeed, it might be argued, he has a duty to do so when he sees the club standing still or regressing.

The parsimony of the Board has lessened our international reputation. We have been embarrassed in this window.

No-one is calling for reckless spending. What its demanded is an ambition by the Board reflective of the prize on offer (CL football).

We have known for ages about the frail defence and requirement for proven quality. Yet, we continue the charade of last minute transfer window failure instead of getting business done early when the prices are actually cheaper. The requirement for earlier activity is all the more so given that our season starts in July.

The Board were happy enough to invest our time, effort and money in encouraging us to buy SBs, to come to CL qualifiers, to subscribe to Celtic TV and to buy kits and merchandise. All fans had a reasonable expectation of some significant investment in new players, particularly in defence.

The fact that the disappointment is nothing new should perhaps teach us a lesson.

The performance of our centre back pairing on Wednesday should teach the board a lesson.

What about our centre back pairing for tomorrow ??

I would go with Boyata and Simonovic if Ajer is suspended.

I think these 2 have a bit more muscle and obviously more experience than Ajer and Hendry.

Ajer is a fantastic player, but still learning and a bit in experienced and Hendry is a great prospect, we just need old heads in to steady the ship.

Also a bit of urgency on the ball, get it forward quicker and into wide areas.

BR has a budget. He does not negotiate contracts, that is the responsibility of PL.

If the money required is within the budget of BR,PL should be concluding that signing.

PL is not qualified to decide on football matters. Only on financial matters. Bearing in mind his track record over his tenure,I may have omitted the words certainly and perhaps.

He has so far lost three managers who won three titles, another who won two in a row,and seems hell-bent on putting another skull on his mantelpiece.

His ego is out of control, has been for years. It needs to be reined in. No way can this continue.

  14. I don’t know what the problem is between Brendan and the Board but it needs to be sorted out pronto. I find it incredulous that the Board would cut their noses off to spite their faces and cause Brendan to leave. Apart from delivering two unprecedented, successive trebles he is single handedly responsible for increasing the ST sales which will collapse next season if BR walks and the Celtic fans will not be in a forgiving mood.

If Brendan is talking publicly to the SMSM, not something he is prone to do, then it is because someone at Board level is not listening to him and he has become frustrated. Basically he is keeping the fans informed, something that will never happen from the Board.

If the Board are that ruthless and really do have a couldn’t care less attitude regarding our Club then the next stage is selling out to somebody with no emotional attachment to our Club.

This really could not come at a worse time as it will give an ebullient sevco confidence that they can match us on the pitch.

As regards people accusing Paul67 of being a mouthpiece for the club and spreading Board propaganda then I find that hard to believe because it would ultimately spell the demise of this blog if that were true.

  15. Well I for one, once I realised what the implications were, was more than happy with Brendan Rodgers speaking out.

Yet that doesn’t for one minute mean that Paul67’s leader doesn’t have a point, and an important point.

If you are a Celtic supporter you should be aware it’s a very long held tradition, maybe even to our club’s founding fathers that if you have knowledge of what’s happening in the “inner sanctum” of Celtic Park you stay schtum, very schtum.

Breaking this code of silence isn’t so much as frowned upon as looked on as sacrilege…

Just think on some of the goings on in times past where events have happened, the workings and detail might filter out over the years in rumour and innuendo but as time goes on and we think the truth will out, then we hear…

…silence – many a Celtic man (& women) have taken many a secret to their grave.

So in that respect, in that tradition, which BR would be more than aware of, was his machinations over the last week indulgent – yes they were, even more than that, they were outrageous.

Yet as stated I welcome Brendan’s candour. This is the 21st Century and the silence imposed to protect and enhance Celtic’s ability to operate and thrive in a hostile environment has for too long been used as a gagging omertà.

Celtic’s patrons provide a lot of support financially, practically, emotionally to the Club, they are grown up and sophisticated stakeholders and deserve to know what’s going on.

You are taking issue with the media spinning things. We all know that. The media and the authorities in this country are no supporters of us; they will do everything in their power to undermine us.

However, what I take issue with (and I believe others as well) is not the media’s spinning, its Brendan’s direct quotes and the implications they have.

I’m not stupid enough to believe everything the media writes, but direct quotes are direct quotes.

It’s plain to all that there is discord afoot. Look at Paul’s article: “You and I know that talk getting in the way these objectives is as inexplicable as it is indulgent.”

  17. Oh the great CP blame game.

Not a very competitive fixture in my eyes — 80 / 20 is as close as it gets.

BR — after all he has achieved in two years — has some slack to cut.

PL — after 15 wasted years and an ever expanding bonus — needs a new challenge somewhere else. How many times must we suffer his failure to deliver from a position of strength before the penny drops? Second rate property bean counter ego tripping his way through a game of CM in the flesh.

Did BR sign off Marvin? Is there any clue that he was interested in this player?

I’m sure that if he were,he would have persevered with him.

    So,naw.

Brendan did not make decisions on Jozo and DB on form and fitness reasons. He played Jozo as first pick until he got banned for being a knob, and he still hasn’t played DB as he needs his close season.

The latter we knew about, the formercould probably have been guessed at.

I’ll say it again. Brendan Rodgers was sent into the qualifiers with two inexperienced centre-halfs. They should not be playing together, they should be playing alongside an experienced player from whom they can learn.

  19. Well, it’s been an interesting couple of days, right?

First up, on Chris McLaughlin and the continuing controversy over what he said the other night.

That story was a nailed on fact, as I knew it was when I heard it. The lead article on here proves that it was a nailed on fact. Due to a conversation I had today I am more than ever 150% certain it was a nailed on fact, not that I needed any convincing of it.

That story is no longer seriously disputed or in dispute.

So there’s a problem and it’s a real problem and not a made up one. The question is, how big a problem do we actually have here?

A big one, but perhaps not as bad as some in the media today might think.

Mr On Yer Bike (sorry, I don’t know how to do your name on here haha) had a go at me for my article yesterday; I hate to say this but I hope he has the good grace to at least acknowledge that the content was spot on even if he thinks I over-egged it.

But his analysis of Brendan’s other comments yesterday, and which are all over the media today, are dead on the nose accurate; Brendan’s public “threat to resign” was no such thing, although he gave the media an open door to spin it as one.

Brendan was speaking frankly and candidly about his own drive and desire. He was asked if he felt his own ambition for this club was lessening what would his response be, and he said that he would consider his time here at an end. His OWN ambition for the club.

I am more concerned about his refusal to answer the question about whether his ambition matches that of the club, but there’s a way of interpreting that comment too which the media will not explore. I could make an argument that even that – which on the surface seemed extremely negative – could be taken a whole other way.

He should have given a more savvy answer to that question, in my view. it was an inflammatory answer, and I think one that came out of his frustration about the briefing against him on Wednesday night. I hope all involved put their guns away from this moment forward … and in a lot of ways Brendan tried to do just that yesterday in his other statements.

But let me repeat – and I’ll be writing about it later – Brendan Rodgers DID NOT threaten to resign, and those on here who have picked apart his statement and put that comment in the context where it belongs are 100% right about it. That is a scandalous example of the media hearing what it wants and putting out only the message they want people to read. It is disgraceful.

  20. “Did BR sign off Marvin? Is there any clue that he was interested in this player?”

    – So adding to the charge sheet is a view that as far back as January BR was being given players he didn’t want. Really ? Where did this come from ?

“Brendan did not make decisions on Jozo and DB on form and fitness reasons”

    – Er, sorry, what ? As coach he didn’t choose Jozo (available and on bench) but put in Hendry. He could have thrown in Boyata but chose to rest him. Brendan’s choice.

This discussion, now ignoring the facts in front of us, is just getting weird.

Blowback on this is the known weaknesses in the defence are not addressed.

Plus the DB issue becomes a full scale emergency as we have no one coming in if he goes out.

We have a defence that spends it’s afternoons in a crèche and the football suffers.

All of this point to too much ego and not enough planning.

Doubly so as we have significant resources available to us and we have generated more in the mean time.

There is not a single person who works in the upper echelons of Celtic Park – not one – who wants a “successful Sevco.” At worst they might believe there is a case for saying we need a subsistence level version of them to keep us on our toes, but don’t ever for a second think anyone wants them to be strong or to challenge us. That is not true in even the remotest sense.

Apologies, clearly I have not made myself understood.

My point is this: those quotes should never have been given. End of.

If BR truly feels his ambitions are being thwarted and truly believes he is not being properly supported, then he should resign.

It’s as simple as it is unpalatable.

As Madmitch alludes to above, we can probably invoke the 80/20 rule: BR will have the backing of the vast majority of fans. By going to the media he is hoping to bring fan pressure to bear on transfer policy.

In my humble opinion, whilst this strategy may work in the short term, it is devisive and not sustainable in the medium/long term.

BR may have felt he had little alternative, but in choosing to go down this road, he has effectively signalled the beginning of the end of his tenure as Celtic manager.

@ THE BLOGGER FORMERLY KNOWN AS GM on 10TH AUGUST 2018 3:01 PM

You could argue that is the “dignified” thing to do (although I thought only Walter Smith did dignity), however if Brendan opted for that approach it would leave a lot of unanswered questions which I doubt (due to legal constraints) that he would be able to discuss in public.

It also leaves us in a situation where those who have potentially caused the issue (the board- and let me state that this is not binary, blame could be attributed both ways), remain and suffer no consequences.

While this situation is not directly comparable, in many ways Brendan’s comments are similar to whistle-blowing; nothing illegal has been done here, but nonetheless, there is a benefit to the wider sphere of interested parties (Celtic fans and shareholders) to have knowledge of what is transpiring within the club.

I’m happy he has not meekly accepted what appears to be sub-standard support from the board. After all, Brendan is the most valuable commodity Celtic have; and Peter Lawwell certainly isn’t.

  33. When things don’t add up there is incompetence afoot.

We’ve never been stronger financially – yet some think the plc want a strong Sevco for financial reasons? Why? So we can only get access to CL money every twobout of three years or less? That’s not logical.

The club are saving the cash and PL is getting bigger and bigger bonuses? Maybe but they aren’t so big that we haven’t still got the dough to get the players we need.

So I call incompetency. I don’t know who but the signs are there that identified signings aren’t getting over the line.

I also think this article does nothing to assuage fears or feelings that this blog is fed lines from Pistol Pete when the heat is on. I’d go so far as to say it’s pretty divisive – the opposite of what the blog appears to want.

I’m not a moonhowler but not questioning the obvious when it’s right there in front of you is what leads to lack of accountability and damage being done. So it needs calling out. There are failings and they need addressed. The board have us financially secure and running smoothly. But the transfer side of things still requires work. I repeat, I don’t blame any individual, maybe it’s a number of things (scouting etc?) but it needs fixed.

Quality in key defensive and attacking positions are required. The end of the transfer deadline will answer many of our questions.

On the field we need to sort out our set plays. They are crap. They have been for half a decade now. We can’t blame the board for that however! But the signing thing?
