Inexplicable talk

647

There can be no doubt that Brendan Rodgers has played his cards very publicly this week.  I don’t know the ins-and-outs of it, but it cannot be over losing a player he could not promise a starting position to.  I’m not buying that, there has to be something we are not seeing.

We have a modestly important league game tomorrow and a hugely important Champions League qualifier on Tuesday, so between now and Wednesday, at the earliest, it would be preferable not to allow this week of internally created negativity to drag on into yet another press conference.

We are also trying to convince Dedryck Boyata and Moussa Dembele to sign new contracts.  You and I know that talk getting in the way these objectives is as inexplicable as it is indulgent.

  1. One of the other strange things over the last 2-3 weeks was the news around Daniel Arzani on a lengthy loan. If I recall correctly when this story first appeared, BR pretty much said he knew nothing about it. The hint was there that the move was not being initiated by him.

The board would much prefer to have a young & upcoming star than pay a transfer fee for Paddy Roberts, no? Why pay several million for a winger when you can get the next big thing for free?

It makes good business sense but it might also spotlight that this is not just about McGinn or Boyata but about who is in charge of football matters.

What level of performance / what level of failure would be required before PL is shown the door? What we are seeing now is not a surprise / it is not new news …

It is now the CFC CEO matrix where we keep making the same mistakes over and over again.

I would love to put the blame on DD / the Irish Raj for allowing PL to run the show anyway he likes as long as DD doesn’t need to put his hand in his pocket to cover another emergency rights issue.

However we have the issue where DD is now losing out on an asset with a growth trajectory that is about to be hobbled by the ego and actions of our useless CEO — his actions are costing DD and us a lot of money.

The actions of PL — if it doesn’t make sense then it doesn’t make sense and you have to ask why?

In the past of BQ — and then the batten was passed to PL — there was a hidden agenda to cut the wage bill and clip MON’s wings.

I fear PL got to like hidden agendas.

Then it was financial to appease DD with the support in the dark.

Now we seen to have the hidden / hidden agenda where DD is now also in the dark.

If PL is losing money because players are getting sold quick enough then maybe he has another income stream lined up?

Why in all of this am I reminded of the cult street film — WMCJ.

Tells a great story about how a hidden agenda destroys trust and breaks up a great team.

  3. Paul67

If you don’t know the ins and outs then why did you state that McGinn didn’t sign for us because he wasn’t guaranteed first team football?

The problem with being Lawwell’s spin doctors are that eventually you give opinions that you know are nonsense.

A lot of the pro Lawwell faction like yourself and Harry Brady now begin to sound like Gerry McSherry.

  4. The current apparent situation with the manager and the board is very unfortunate given how successful things have been these last few years.

The only thing I can think of is that Brendan has previously indicated that this is going to be his final season and the board are therefore keeping firm hold of the purse strings for use by the next man. Perhaps Brendan feels that he should still be allowed to strengthen to see him through to May.

Meanwhile, neither board nor manager would want anyone to know he’s leaving just yet. Just a wild guess on my part.

  5. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

As an aside and a further example of the unique nature of the EPL, consider these statistics of the spending of newly promoted teams in the EPL, Serie A, Bundesliga and La Liga:

    Bundesliga (Fortuna Düsseldorf, Nürnberg): €6.350.000

La Liga (Huesca, Real Valladolid, Rayo Vallecano): €10.600.000

Serie A: (Empoli, Frosinone, Parma): €25.600.000

Premier League (Fulham, Cardiff, Wolves): €214.900.000

Now these statistics are between the top 4 leagues only. Imagine the drop off when you begin to consider Holland, Portugal and more obscure leagues.

The statistics clearly prove that while we cannot compete with the EPL, no other league in Europe can either. The EPL spending has become an easy out on here as to why we cannot buy players, but the European markets are in no way comparable and no one can claim that every player we want is snapped up by the EPL (after all, the top 8 in the EPL are in a completely different market for players than we are).

  7. Hi guys. Does anyone seriously think BR will walk away when it will look like he’s running scared Sevvy G- string. Not a chance.

  8. So reading between the lines of what BR said has some saying that he is not happy, even to the point that he may be leaving sooner rather than later.

And yet, the are direct quotes since then where the BR states:

“It’s a joy to work here. I love my life here and enjoy being the manager here.”

    What am I to believe?

It’s like the paradox the The Eagles set, do I “Take it easy” or “Take it to the limit”?

  9. We have a modestly important league game tomorrow

The type of arrogant contempt that if allowed to seep into the club’s thinking will result in failure. Hopefully the manger and players are professional enough not to think that, I’m sure they are.

Interesting that the board now see league games as modestly important, maybe they should reflect this with a reduction in season ticket prices.

If the manager thinks he is being undermined he has a right to Speak out. His timing, and audience chosen, to speak out to is poor but the fact he felt the need to should be the main concern for all supporters.

For the ceo/board to leak against the manager to preferred journos and bloggers is reprehensible. If they have something to say, say it.

  11. As so many on here are , effectively, saying anyone who does not accept that there is a problem between Manager and Board is in denial, I give you something that is NOT opinion. This is from yesterday:

“Rodgers insisted there had been no fall-out behind the scenes and added: “Dermott (Desmond ), Peter (Lawwell) and Ian (Bankier) all want what is best for Celtic. Critically, they are major shareholders and run the club. I have to respect that, and I do.

“My ambition is for Celtic. Every manger is ambitious, but, for me, it’s inherently about the club. We’ve done a double treble, been invincible in one of those seasons, set a British record for unbeaten games.

“We don’t want to stand still. How do we improve? We improve in Europe and in order to do that, it’s simple, is quality players.

“The minute I start thinking otherwise and get comfortable, then progress stops. In football you can’t afford to do that.

“It’s too late once the rot sets in. It’s too late. I’ve always tried to guard against it.

“Especially after our first season, we built on it last year. We want to keep building on it.

CELTIC FAN…Brendan Rodgers proudly holds aloft a green and white scarf to the fans on day one.

“I totally respect how difficult it can be, the financial side is tough at times.

“I have a huge respect for the board here – absolutely. They have run the club strategically very, very well.

“Me coming into here and what I have seen in the past couple of years, I have real good relations with every one of them.

“There is not an issue there at all. My focus is on doing the best for Celtic.

“Deep down I am a supporter, but I am also a professional manager. I also look for the help that is needed to take the team to the next level if that is what the demand is.

“I will always push for that.”

  12. HEADTHEBALL – BR has said on many occasion he is in his dream job and that as long as Celtic were happy with him he would be going nowhere for a while yet. When saying this, it was normally in reference to the possibility of winning 10iar. I am convinced that is/was BR’s objective and when delivered he would leave. To do this, in his eyes, the team has to keep improving. So 2-3 quality signings each year to keep the momentum going and ensure the players don’t slack off.

I think what he is seeing now is that the board are willing to gamble on 10inar just like they are with CL qualification. Perhaps they are putting too much faith in BR’s loyalty to the club and to his ability to get ever more out of the same bunch of players.

I would direct you to the first paragraph of Paul’s article:

“There can be no doubt that Brendan Rodgers has played his cards very publicly this week. I don’t know the ins-and-outs of it, but it cannot be over losing a player he could not promise a starting position to. I’m not buying that, there has to be something we are not seeing.”

To repeat: “There has to be something we are not seeing”

So I take it you disagree with Paul’s article then and believe that he is fanning the flames of a non-existent issue?

I believe that Paul, like anyone else, is giving his opinion.

Just because Paul believes that, “There has to be something we are not seeing” does not mean that there is. Nor does it mean that if there is `something` that it must be what so many are assuming.

  16. A week is a long time in football, things could well have changed in the past wee while, something has happened for Brendan to speak out, we can speculate till the cows come home as to what IT is, all I can see is that some sort of rift has broken out.

A double treble, CL two years in a row, a sell out stadium, kudos to all involved, suits included, but FFS, to alienate the manager who has brought us that is insane.

    Get it sorted Celtic.

PS, the leader today is dreadful.

Team selection tomorrow could be interesting.

    ——-

It will, i think Boyata will come in to get some game time before Athens. Previous two games against Hearts Brendan has went for a physical team, i think he will do likewise tomorrow. Rogic, Brown, Ntcham, Edouard are all likely to start and perhaps even Kouassi.

  18. Hot Smoked – one can but speculate, as Pauls says, there must be something else going on :)

Pros and Cons of cycling here, very much depends on what kind of cycling you enjoy and on what kind of terrain. The area where we are based is the winter playground for the majority of the professional teams. Astana, Katusha, AG2R, Quickstep, Lotto Soudal, BMC, FDJ etc. all train on the Northern Costa Blanca each December – January. Plenty of traffic free roads, very smooth tarmac, challenging climbs and good weather. There are routes to suit most abilities and enough options to ensure you don’t keep repeating the same 2-3 rides each time you go out.

No real cons unless you only like cycling on flat roads.

I regularly host groups and clubs and organise cycling breaks for them.

  19. Deniabhoy

Thanks for that. I like the sound of the `smooth tarmac` but am less enamoured of the ` challenging climbs ` !!

There is nearly always a downside. Where I live offers a great variety of routes but, living on the coast means East is out !

I dont think Brendan said he knew nothing about it. I believe he said he thought that was one the Club were working on. It may be as simple as Brendan not knowing the exact status of the deal. It may be the case that PL and his son, via Txiki Begiristain were the source of the deal but as long as BR has the final say there is no problem with that.

I think in all honesty JM had his mind set on Celtic but as things dragged on he went for a look around at Villa and meal with Steve Bruce. I think Villa wanted him more and SB has obviously convinced him. Whatever he is earning will double if they get promoted and if they don’t he may get a move anyway to the EPL if he is any good. The Agent will have been in his ear with words to that effect.

If we do go on and complete 10 in a row it will be interesting to see where JM is at that time. IMO there is more chance he will regret this decision than not.
