Insights from strategically huge window

384

Having rested nine players from Sunday, last night’s result and performance was inconceivably good.  There were several star performers but I thought Anthony Ralston and David Turnbull put in shifts that may go below radar, but were both outstanding.

Callum McGregor made the most of his freedom to move forward to catch the County defence sleeping at a corner kick.  The unlikely amount of space he had inside the box was punished with remarkable simplicity.

Giorgos Giakoumakis did what Giorgos Giakoumakis does.  He was a handful for the home defence throughout, taking some industrial treatment in the process, but got his goal and could have added more.

Sead Haksabanovicat hasn’t played in 12 weeks and only signed with Celtic a week ago.  I did not expect to see him until near the end of September and, during the game, was adamant his was on the subs bench only to help him integrate with the squad.

I am happy to put a caveat before what I’m going to suggest, specifically, this Celtic team could make you or I look good, but what an impressive 15 minutes we saw of him last night.  He is direct, can cross and shoot, and was always available.  He is a player.

You and I have been doing this stuff on deadline day for a long time.  Never have we been so chilled out.  Never has the Celtic squad looked so complete.  Never have the “just one more player would guarantee the league” brigade been so prosaic.  In that time, we have seen a lot of great Celtic teams, several sides that progressed to the knockout stages of the Champions League and completed four trebles.

For years, Callum McGregor played more football than any other player on the planet.  He coped admirably, but this did his development and longevity in the game no favours.

Oliver Abildgaard is a defensive mid in the peak of his career who may become the third capture from our development club in the east.  Whether he arrives or not, you have never seen as comprehensive a Celtic squad.

One more thing, as Columbo used to say.  I am very familiar with the precarious finances across the city, which continue to underpin our second successive Generation of Domination.  But even I’m surprised at their lack of transfer spend so far this window.  Has financial realism finally reached Ibrox after 34 years of havoc?

Let’s not tempt provenance, there are hours left and all this strategic stuff will feel inappropriate if the result doesn’t go our way on Saturday (it will only feel that way), but despite A Europa final, Champions League group stage and all those player sales, this window indicates the depths of their problems.

  1. Biggest issue of the summer — nobody has come through from the B Team / Youths?

At least the issue is known about and changes being made.

However that it should have ever come to this suggests that we have been asleep at the wheel for 5 years at least probably closer to 10.

The St N’s angle does not seem to be working / has not been handled well.

Too many fat and happy having a badge during their plooky youth.

    Not good.

  2. 6 players added to the squad:

    2 loans

    2 out of contract.

    2 transfers

AP didn’t have much to spend but he worked every angle he could.

Then there are the ones that we missed out on / walked on by.

Interesting to see what happens to them — Sunderland ?!?

Interesting that we didn’t sell any of our active players.

Some talk but nothing concrete — a bit unsettling though.

Money not mental enough or nobody to buy / replace them with?

    OA — new Danish bloke.

    This generations version of MW?

The guy who put PG out of the game.

  3. Great window Celtic. Really looking forward to what Haka and big Olly bring to the party on top of a purring Mooy, an improving Bernabei and a roll royce Jenz.

Special wee word for Mikey Johnston. So glad he picked a team in Portugal. Special talent on his day and I hope this helps him kick on like others who’ve gone overseas.

Now bring on the Huns, who have equated a run to the Europa League final and beating an under par PSV as a sign they are once again top dogs (without the trophies to prove it of course).

    I hope we hammer them……

  4. TR — admit it we would all take him back.

MJ — never say never / the bus is back in the garage but ready to go at a moments notice.

  6. Oh and what a difference between Ange/Nicholson/Lawell Jnr to Lennon/Lawell Snr/Hammond…

Night and frickin day. Hire good people and let them do their job.

We now hold over a potential £100m alone in talent on our books as a result of the last 3 windows.

You sound like a really bitter employee whose company has taken a direction different to the one you wanted.

For one so close to the action, who knows so much, or at least how to Google, why did you not agitate and do more make the change you wanted to see ?

I get that it is easier to be an anonymous keyboard warrior.

Can you not enjoy the ride now ? These are really exciting Celtic times for most of us.

  8. Hopefully Big Tom is ok.

I have to admit that is the only downside of the window. That he doesn’t seem to be sorted anywhere. ESP pre World Cup.

  9. A pleasant tension free window , lovely , kept our stars and added to with ready made acquisitions.

A win tomorrow will set in doubts…. can they close the gap .

A comfortable win will be damaging ……

I’m hoping for a two clear goal win , if we dont get sloppy and go after them from the off it could be anything.

The noise as usual will be deafining….Cant wait.🟩⬜🟨⚽💚🍻

  10. Celts are Here on Twitter has pointed out, the wording on last night’s signing is subtle, but different.

He is here on a “season long deal”, not a loan and for that reason there is no option to buy.

“Oliver has effectively suspended his contract with Kazan which will kick back in next summer IF there’s resolution to the ongoing conflict in the region. As far as we’re aware, Under these circumstances Celtic won’t have had to pay any fee for Oliver and negotiated a wage packet independent of his Russian deal for the year.

It’s why there can be no option to buy Albigaard. It means Celtic can still sign the player down the line next summer, but they would have to negotiate with Rubin at that point.”

    FIFA’s stance:

The Bureau of the FIFA Council has decided to extend the temporary employment rules established in the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP) with the aim of effectively assisting players, clubs and coaches impacted by the war in Ukraine.

The decision follows the RSTP amendments approved by the Bureau of the Council on 7 March 2022 and 16 March 2022, which provided urgent legal certainty and clarity on a number of important regulatory matters.

Under the RSTP provisions approved by the Bureau of the Council, should clubs affiliated to the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) or the Football Union of Russia (FUR) not reach a mutual agreement with their respective foreign players and coaches before or on 30 June 2022, and unless otherwise agreed in writing, these players and coaches will have the right to suspend their employment contracts with their clubs until 30 June 2023.

These provisions give players and coaches the opportunity to train, play and receive a salary, while protecting Ukrainian clubs and facilitating the departure of foreign players and coaches from Russia.

  15. My friends in Celtic.

CQN is reflecting the happy place that Celtic are in.

Celtic performing professionally on and off the park. It is not fashionable to do so, but let’s give credit to our custodians who have obviously resisted enquires from well heeled suitors.

It would be naive to assume our quality players did not attract attention.

Our manager is the boss, he is settled and has his own man at his side; his confidant and first team coach: Harry Kewell. ( All managers need this )

What is also very encouraging is the fact that we have now restructured our Academy.in terms of staff and operations.. At last .

    HH, the journey continues.

  16. If we could sign Haksabanivic ( it’ll take me a couple of months to spell that correctly) then I don’t see why we couldn’t have signed Abildgaard on a permanent.

Perhaps a ‘loan’ suited all parties given the time available.

Listened to the cynic podcast, one of the lads made a simple but genius point, we’re a good team and they’re good at stopping good teams.

They’ll do everything to make tomorrow’s game an eyesore but if our passing, first touch and off the ball runs are up the standard they have been, we’ll be 5 clear tomorrow afternoon.

  17. Severe weather warning for tomorrow in Glasgow. Thunderstorms and torrential rain.

  23. Big Wavy – nah, keeping Morelos and Kent were like new signings for them. Shows how big they are that these galácticos are still in Glasgow.

Celtic enquired about buying Oliver but Rubin Kazan said he was not for sale. The player suspended his contract under current FIFA rules, allowing the move to Celtic for one year to go ahead. It is a temporary transfer rather than a loan deal.

Exactly. I suspect they will set out with that type of game plan (usual for them) but with a supposed excuse now.

  30. Good window — but not for the SPL.

We only looked at the St M 17 year old and he seems to have cultural challenges.

One to watch this season to find out if we have missed out.

None of the youths coming through — very sore.

At least we are making changes to hopefully improve things.

Might be we have had the talent but not the coaching / attitude / preparation

    .

BL / RV / JD / TO the GK / EO / DM — hopefully they start to make a move forward.
