Instant gratification and the road ahead

607

Instant gratification is no good for people, it gives our brains the wrong signals, but still, when it comes……….  Within 4 minutes of making his Celtic debut Daizen Maeda opened the scoring against Hibernian.  It was his first chance, his first proper involvement in play and pivoted the game away from Hibs, who should have already been ahead after Joe Hart and Josip Juranovic pondered in their six-yard box.

Such was the anticipation ahead of last night’s game that for some of us it brought back memories of Jorge Cadete’s debut against Aberdeen (delayed by maleficence at the SFA), or Paulo Di Canio’s against Kilmarnock the same year.  Maeda’s impact was every bit as clinical.  His 90 minutes was reminiscent of Kyogo; constant movement, gyroscopic balance, few touches and an outcome-determining performance.

If Maeda had a dream debut, Reo Hatate’s reached fantasy levels.  When we first heard of Reo he was operating as a left back, with the cursed title of a utility player.  The transformation he brought to Celtic’s play had to be seen to be believed.  His role was to create and then utilise space, the former achieved by perpetual movement, the latter by ranging passes that switched play and swiftly pushed Celtic forward.

As a consequence, it all looked too easy for Celtic.  They had options everywhere, a teammate in space, a forward pass tempting them into attack.  Hatate’s movement impacted what happened everywhere on the field.  It was a kind of omnipresence, even when he was 40 yards away (the limit of his distance from play), he was still consequential.

With so many playing their first game in over a month, the relenting pace of the first half could not continue.  Celtic reduced their pressing after the break and saw the game out.  With five substitutes available, it was curious that Ange Postecoglou waited until 74 minutes before brining on Yosuke Ideguchi, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Mikey Johnston.

Our third and final debutant of the night had a lot to live up to.  Yosuke adopted the No. 6 role at the back of the midfield, with Callum McGregor moving one place ahead for the remainder of the game.  He did enough to show comfort and competence on the ball, as Celtic subverted Hibernian hopes.

As I said above, instant gratification misleads our brains.  My brain has already extrapolated last night’s performance across the remainder of the season.  Let’s agree that at the very least, Celtic have embarked on an exciting road.

  1. GLENDALYSTONSILS – Agreed. Crossing from the wings seems to be hit and hope more often than not. The days when wide players knew a Larsson, Sutton or Hartson would be waiting for the header are long gone. Saw Maeda waiting in vain several times for a decent ball that he could run onto. He was perpetual motion, his pressing was superb but he didn’t actually get many good balls played to him after Rogic’s assist in 3 minutes.

Something to work on? Most goals are probably going to come from direct play through the middle – which clearly suits Kyogo – quick passes, give and take, one twos rather than high crosses.

  2. Just saw the First half and thought a few of Badas crosses were excellent, maybe GG would have been in a position to get on the end of them but a pleasant change from the cross going way to high and out for a throw in.Really good first half.

Shout for out Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter Vickers both of whom were excellent and snuffed out Boyle and Nesbit in a very attacking Hibs side.

agreed. some great interceptions, also praise for CCV passing, he hits a very accurate cross field pass, on the ground.

i read back to the ingame blogging, what a lot of shite interlopers post on here, anything to get attention, starfelt, taylor, jamsie even calmac, a lot of crap comments,

everybody played well, or another way, nobody played badly, very few individual errors.

the two japanese players put a ball out the park with inaccurate passes behind the player, no groans, just encouragement.

2nd half, we still created , just final ball was a cross when it could have been a cut back.

song book, i couldnt give a rats ass.

  5. Very good first 45 last night and very average second. Gave Hibs too much possession in the second half .

Good team performance, but some players were ot on it.

Not allowed to name names , though.

  6. they didnt “give them possession” Hibs kept the ball better and moved it faster.

name names then, who wasnt on it ?

People have been singing Irish songs of rebellion since the first meeting in saint marys hall.

If people are offended by it, have some courage of their convictions. Counter protest if you will.

For once I agree with Ernie if you dont like it drown them out with other songs or boo them.

Send your season card back, explain why “I cant sit in this horrible toxic environment, give me a refund”

Write to the club telling them you want these offenders removed.

    Complain to plod and stewards.

Go stand next to the Brigade and shout them down, take direct action.

or alternatively, join in like the many thousands at hampden and away games do.

  9. CELTIC40ME @ 12:25 PM,

We did definitely change our tactics in the second half…

    Truth…

Can you imagine the halftime team talk.!?

Sensei P, when we arrived you said that you had one football philosophy

    Correct

Sensei P, You said you have spent the last six months drumming that into all Celtic players, we only play one way

    Correct

Sensei P, You said you have spent innumerable hours and using expedient means to train and coach all in this way of playing

    Correct

Sensei P, Now you wish us to change the way we play?

    Correct

    Sensei P, Will that work?

    We’ll see

  10. On the singing front, along time ago the consensus was, we don’t sing Sectarian songs.

    Now it’s…

The song my Grandfather wore… Out

    Change the tune:)))

  11. St, Stivs, I’m with you,

It’s not that I want a Reb Session at matches, it’s just all the tut tutting here achieves nothing , much the same as the Political Tennis Match that has been running here since the Indy Referendum and neither side has yet won a game.

Loving the Football chat today, it’s the reason I joined the site many many Moons ago and why I still hang in there,

  12. I can see me telling the youths in the family,

you need to change the songbook, the songs of war are inrrelavent to a modern day celtic support,

    How ?

well us grown up near retirement are really sensitive to the performance of the plc and the team

What did you sing then ?

well, songs about em, the IRA, Anti Royal Establishment songs hating the queen and her son and his wife,

em, , songs against the british army, mountbatten thatcher, the tories and any songs about celtic players might have had sectarian add ons, oh i forgot also king billy and John Know, and every now and again some based on catholic hyms, but thats irrelevant just now, you bring your songbook up to date,

aye right uncle h, next you will be telling us to vote unionist.

  13. Debate about the GB Song book ?

Im reminded of that great song by UB40…” Sing our own Songs”.

I will bet good money that many on here who are slagging off the GB, have NOT ONLY Sang

The Rebs songs in previous years inside Celtic Park, but do NOT indulge now, but IF they are in a Celtic Pub and some of the Reb songs are played by a Group or on a Jukebox, they will happily ” Clap along and/or Tap the Feet”…if not singing along ?

I was at a Wedding in Donegal a few years ago, and their was the usual ” Wedding Group/Band”, but at one point a beautiful local Lass ( A GUEST…. who was known to the Group), got up on the small stage and sang ” Down by the Glenside”…

Should that Ghirl have been shouted down or thrown out of the wedding ?

She sang it so well and it brought Tears to the Eye amongst many of the Wedding guests. Its was the best ” LIVE” Version that I have ever heard in my life.

  14. Interesting how those on the pro British triumphs can simultaneously glorify their own genocide, when they are a small part of a war machine

Yet suffer total historical amnesia when it comes to genocide anywhere there is pink on the map.

    Total amnesia,forwarded as ‘civilising

The Nazis learned well on how to document death,

Look at the food export record of Ireland during famine years.similarities are uncanny.

Anyone not knowing Celtics Irish origins I advise reading brendan sweeneys opening trilogy

  15. BIG JIMMY @ 3:16 PM,

First three paragraphs spot on for me.

No Sectarian songs at football matches is what I think now, we have a large, varied and excellent song book.

    We should utilise it.

    Hail Hail

  16. I was toying with rolling up at Alloa on Saturday and chancing getting a ticket outside.

But then I noticed its a half five kick off. So maybe thats kayboshed the plan.

I just had another thought, last night was acheived without Kyogo, Turnbull and Ralston.

Its going to be some ride.

  17. Nothing wrong with being delighted about good performances from players making their debuts.

If Sevco can get excited about “good business” when selling a good, young asset, we can get excited by some of yesterday’s performances.

  18. Last night, the GB`s IRA repertoire was much more obvious than is normal. I thought that was something to do with the fact that we were playing Hibs and the GB were trying to send them some sort of message that they , the Hibs fans, were no longer being true to their origins.

Sorry for the non-football post but I actually felt that at the game rather than as a response to some of today`s posts.

Incidentally, I thought some of the football on display in the first half was as good as I have seen by any Celtic side. Exhilarating.

His crocodile tears, he is a man on the brink of something. Will say sorry for something without ever actually admitting in his own head that what he did was wrong.

Another deflection now, maybe the rules were too strict, what the hell does that even mean. It was not rules, guidelines or a nice to have, it was set in law.

The Lady Gray report, its is going to have to be something akin to bestowing honours of an old club as assets bought by a new club, as a get out it is going to have to be incredibly creative.

If I asked my team to do the report, it would have been a one pager in the inbox by the afternoon.

In what work environment are you allowed to break for drinks while on the clock ? that is enough for a dismissal right there.

I can almost understand BOTH sides of the Song Debate, but I REFUSE to be a HYPOCRITE on here by slagging the GB Song Book at Celtic Park and at away games, whilst I KNOW for FACT that If I was in a Pub and/or Party and the Rebs were being sung or played, I would likely join in….especially whilst downing many Pints of Beer.

Do those who disapprove of the GB’s song book, also FROWN upon The Soldiers Song being played at Fitba and Rugby matches.

IF I attended a Scotland v Rep of Ireland Fitba match…or Scotland v Ireland Rugby match, I would happily sing along to The Soldiers Song.

I’ve seen similar comments in various media and normally it is very strict (it is in my current work)

It did get me thinking about previous jobs though.

In England we had our own pub onsite and we all went for pints on a Friday lunch and then back to meetings/office after. usually 2 pints, all levels of the company. My wife had the same in her place

Never got into it when working in Scotland for the same company which also had a social club.

The only guys who did it in Scotland were on the shop floor (usually a big no no) but had a an esoteric skill which made them un-sackable. Legend had it that any work sent to then in the PM was put back in for rework the next day.

I am sure the police and all sorts of office based administrations had it in the past.

In many modern environments its seen as some sort of cool badge to have a beer fridge or days were you can socialice inside the works space (i wnet ofr an interview with one in glasgow and actually really felt uncomfortable with th ewhole concept of letting the youngers have a drink),

but beyond all that, Boris made the rules into laws, the culture of lets get bevvied seems aborrent during a pandemic.

I know old Lizzie isnt supposed to do Politics, but might she get a placeman to have a word in the ear of Tory Party Chairman and say your knighthood is out the window because of this.

  27. BIG JIMMY @ 3:45 PM,

For me the debate is very straightforward.

If I widen it out, I’d give you an example of someone I know, a lawyer and an Arsenal supporter.

He served Arsenal with a writ about their supporters using the “Y” word in their songs and chants at the Emirates.

For me racism, Sectarianism, homophobia etc doesn’t have a place at a football match.

There was an instance at the Wycombe, Oxford United Derby last weekend – homophobic chants.

These type of things happen at matches up and down the country.

Do you think the GB would tolerate homophobic chanting at Celtic Park, racist songs in Paradise… No of course not, they’d be the first to condemn.

But as sectarianism is their thing that’s all right then and everyone needs to put up with it.

The fact it happened years ago matters not, I’m sure the GB won’t be stocking up on bananas for the old firm game.
