Intelligent play, Directors’ box hospitality competition

377

Champions League match day six was a dead rubber, I wasn’t at the game only watched on TV, but two days on I’m still full of the emotional thrill of the occasion.  With that in mind, the thought that today will be the players final training session before a league game tomorrow illustrates the challenge for Brendan Rodgers.

The players put everything into the game in Manchester, they were visibly flagging near the end.  They will also have shared the high of the occasion.  Bringing that all together to face a team who have been planning nothing but how to frustrate a potentially lethargic and distracted Celtic for a week and you have a game punters would generally avoid backing the favourites in.

News that James Forrest’s hamstring isn’t causing too much concern is welcome.  We’ve all been there.  You feel the twinge but it’s not enough to stop you, so you carry on.  James has more experience of injury than most footballers, as a consequence it looks like he left the field before a “tightness” became an injury.  He was a loss to the game but rather that than a loss to the season.  This counts as very intelligent play.

I’d be reluctant to press James into action tomorrow, especially as it gives Gary Mackay-Steven an opportunity to revisit Firhill, where he scored 37 seconds into his Celtic debut.

I read the article by Paul and have to confess that my own emotiomal thrill at Tuesday’s performance has largely evaporated. It is not that I don’t think the performance was anything other than mature and superb or that we are not headed , on the park at least, to even better things just that events and some of the debate here has got me down.

Admittedly I have knackered my back for the 2nd time in 7 months and the painkillers have left me uncomfortably numb and thosvstste of affairs is getting me down but even if I were in the pink I doubt I would be feeling much cheerier.

I like the rebel songs and no bus trip is right without them. The Foggy Dew might well make it to my desert island alongside Bob, Duke, the Clash and Harry J. I think fans should have the right to sing them. But you know I think that the fans including me should not exercise the right to sing the whole songbook. There was too much of that book for my taste on Tuesday especially during the first half when the onfield activities should have been what was sung about. An opinion.

I have no opinion on the crowd misbehaviour on Tuesday. I have been at too many matches these last 50 years to trust reports anymore. A colleague of mine”s dad was at the game and was thrown out after 10 minutes because he had the wrong accent – he had not even cheered our goal.

The story of abuse of young players is infinitely depressing and nobody can be confident of where this story is heading. So far the names of the abusers were, whether from Crewe, Celtic, Newcastle, Rangers or whatever previously revealed then forgotten. I fear that there is.much more to come on a story that is already, amongst other things, demoralisingly repulsive.

Sean Thornton’s post is if anything even more disheartening -a perfect example of so much that is going wrong. This kind of thing should not be happening.

And of course today another much loved celebrity has been lost. I was not a great fan of ELP and prefeŕred the work all three of the band did in earlier combos. But “L’ was a good musician and his most famous solo song is, with the Pogues’ Fairytale, one of the more bearable Christmas songs recorded iny lifetime. RIP

Sorry to go on but there seem to be more important things going on in 2016 than Celtic playing well – as we undoubtedly did.

  5. Winning captains@5:25pm.mcGarvey,Nicholas! Good players for us in there Day, but why do we keep giving them air time

  6. Looking back at the Man City game there was one area of concern. With our pressing game there were a couple of times in midfield when 2 Celtic players would close down one City player and leave a runner free. This isn’t a criticism of the players or system as the players were reacting quickly to the play but it did leave space in a dangerous position a few times in the match. In the SPL we will probably get away with it but in Europe it may pose a risk.

I don’t think we should change the system but it may cost us a couple of goals each season.

“We’re not going to outbid big clubs down south for players in terms of the financial aspect, but we can demonstrate what Rangers has to offer in terms of the training complex, an iconic stadium and a magnificent support with 50,000 fans, so there’s a lot to enjoy about Rangers.

I get the impression that rational argument isn’t really your forte.

Once again ,nothing you’ve said even addresses, never mind contradicts, my point that Irish immigrants were more readily assimilated in England than in Scotland.

  9. Beer Sheva at Southampton will be a good watch. Looking forward to see how they fare, in particular John Ogu.

  10. Yorkbhoy

Noticed that and similar examples when we were ‘caught’ upfield – but I think this is what Brendan means when he talks about ‘being brave’.

  11. CRC: breithlá sona duit.

I’ll take another one of the Captain’s prints when I’m over on the 17th.

  12. Ming

Yes that’s why I wouldn’t want to change the system. One that stood out gave the City midfielder about 20 yards to run into from the half way line, but if one of the Celtic players had got a touch we would have been in a very strong attacking position.

The only game of interest to me tonight is Southampton v Be’er Sheva. Thought they looked a proper team against us.

HAPPY HOOPY BIRTHDAY to CRC. I will be at the game against Hamilton on Tuesday and will donate my £10 for the deid club’s points total as it will have been surpasses by then!

  16. I do know we are not the only set of supporters who sing songs which some would find offensive.

I don`t know if we are the only set of supporters who regularly talk of the suitability of the songs sung at our games.

Thanks for your considered reply last night. Something to discuss over a pint big guy.

  18. It’ll be interesting to see if Brendan makes changes tomorrow night in Glasgow’s West End. I think GMS did plenty in Manchester to merit a start on the left and I have a feeling we’ll see Griffiths from kick off.

I’m pretty sure that referees from the four “Home” nations aren’t allowed to officiate in Euro ties involving a team from these islands,so why was Wilson allowed to do so on Tuesday?

Look out for him in the directors box at Ibrox sometime soon. Once the furore dies down a bit,of course.

  20. Big John Ogu doing a Victor again tonight.A beast of a man.We could do a lot worse for a holding mid.

  21. 67Heaven .. CHALLENGING THE LIE ..I am wee Oscar...... Ipox belongs to the creditors on

Very pleased that Hapoel have scored, although I do like Southampton

  22. GreeninbingleyinOslo on

I think we will see GMS and Griff start tomorrow night, resting Jamie F even if he’s fit, and Moussa.

Have a feeling that Brendan is about to pull another rabbit out of the hat with GMS, as he has done with Armstrong.

This is a top, top coach. He takes drifting, aimless players, and he weaponises them into a team.

    GMS is next.

God, this is a fine time to be a Tim!
