Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

The latest edition of the Magazine is out today, click on the download link on the graphic below to read for free.

Tom, you need to read up the ole FIFA rule book. Not only do development fees apply cross boundaries, but there is a tier system according to the ranking of the league(s) and the clubs therein in which the player developed.

The current system has a spread of €10,000 for lowest Category 4 clubs, to €90,000 for Category 1 clubs.

Celtic is a Category 2 club FYI, allowed €60,000 training compensation for each year of development investment in a player.

Man City is (I believe) is a Cat 1 club.

    Before I do .–.

Inter are far from being a top tier European team . They are way better than any of Celtic s Scottish opposition . They are a better team than Maribor / Zagreb / Legia. I dont think they ( at the time of writing )are as good as Salzburg .They can field a team of 11 International players –

    Argentina / Brazil, Chile ; Colombia , , Croatia, Italy , Nigeria , Slovenia ..

They have some time to find some form . They will love playing a team that plays the pressing game and hasnt mastered the art of returning to base and filling the space. Sort it -please !

  11. hard draw Inter, the Italians have the knack to pick you off on the counter attack when their opponents give the ball away. This is something we still do to often. Looking fwd to it with a degree of caution thrown in to the mix.

  12. Much to look forward to – dead wood cast adrift and three new signings in January – lots of football excitement in February.

    I echo Paul’s sentiment – buy a half-season ticket.

2013 could be transformational to us, getting to the CL groups could bring £30/£40 million with the new BT contract in place.

Personally I’d have loved to draw Liverpool for a couple of reasons.

We would get a lot of credit from world football when we stuffed them and secondly, it would ensure we’d get to the next round.

My point is that a SB is not the only way people ‘support’ Celtic. It makes no sense for me to buy one. I’m an average Joe with an Average income. I have things in my life other than Celtic. I like to get to Celtic Park 3, 4 times a season.

I spend a fair amount of my income on Celtic and directly to Celtic.

Why the obsession with SB’s? Great if you have one, great if you don’t mind not getting value from it – if I’d more disposable cash I’d get one, maybe two. But facts are facts. Yet for this I and others like me might to some extent be excluded from the ‘big games’….

You getting my point? It’s not about not wanting or being able to afford a SB per se. It’s about fairness and common sense.

Where do you draw a line though?

My ST is £450. For the sake of argument let’s say the club derive the same income from you via merch etc. And the same from another fan who doesn’t have an ST but has spent the same as you and I on individual tickets. Is any one fan more deserving of a ticket than another?

I’ll have 1st dibs on my seat which is one of the few ST perks, derived from paying up front. From that point on though, I don’t really see a fairer way than 1st come, first served. Unless in future season a membership scheme is introduced with a fee of say £25/person that gives you a priority day or two at the start of the public sales.
