Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

If they posted on a political forum their points would get lost in a sea of likeminded posts

Whereas on here they stick out , all bells and lights flashing

‘Has the excellent Craig Gordon been ` accepted` by the Celtic support?’

Has he been ‘accepted’ by that subset of the support who were at Tynecastle when he came up for the corner?

    Geordie

His Talent as a `keeper is beyond reasonable doubt but we have still to see him come up for a Celtic corner.

    JJ

He did I can’t remember the game but he did come up for it.

  5. I actually backed Gordon from day 1.

I am now seeing a few wee things he needs to tighten up on.

He needs to organise the defence better especially at set pieces.

His footwork looks a tad slow if the shot is in the top corner he will need to pull out a top save.

Probably needs to work on his fitness a bit. He was saying before the zagreb game he needed a rest. I think he is feeling it a bit. Understandable after a few years out of the game.

Great signing for hee haw and Swally was training him for a few months so we have those bad habits to get out of him.

I fear if that knee ever breaks down though he is done for.

He is a big lanky Jambo and always will be. If you can see past that he is more than able for us though.

Like other posters I am a bit miffed he hasn;t came up for a corner yet but someone would probably have to take him on their back to get him back up the pitch.

8/10 for big Craig this season so far.

  6. Are you guys kidding. Craig Gordon has been the shining light in our squad.

Not only Accepted, but almost unanimously rated, indispensable.

PS : Hebcelt, there are many topics that are discussed on this Celtic site of no apparent footballing significance e.g. food and dining. They all enhance it.

He’s been accepted by me. He’s better than Fraser Forster.

You are right and you are making the same point I was making.

Perhaps, though, it would have been better directed at the posters who firrst brought this onto the blog. Your problem might be that they are on your side of that political divide though. I have seen this too often. Several posters giving us unwanted YES stuff but, at the first reply from Neg Anon or ernie, they are called out for bringing “politics onto the blog”

  15. Who is this “Rangers FC”? Surely an official complaint notice should contain the correct official club name. So at best the SFA has grown one testicle. Do they have to fudge everything!

  16. Captain Beefheart on

    Don’t care about Rangers.

Fabulous draw but our recent record against Italian teams has been shocking. The preparations for Juventus were particularly naive.

A few unhinged elements suggested that CG was anti Celtic, yep, he shows that attitude in every game, doesn’t he?

    WEEMINGER/GORDON J

I agree that it is likely that she was paid the statutory minimum…. Gordon is wondering the same as I was … even though they like to claim an unbroken history, as we know from their list of unpaid creditors, they dont like to pay on that basis ….

I hope she sues them for everything they’ve got …

Actually, they dont have anything left … so I hope she sues them for more than that!

  22. Somebody is having a “giraffe”. Craig Gordon is pure kwality. Few have noticed big FFs departure let alone lamented it. THE signing of the last window.

    COYBIG. Milan here we come.

VP and Gordy get your shekels sorted.

  23. Greenpinta I am well aware of various topics discussed on here but you;ve got to admit the political stuff is a real turn off. If bloggers are happy discussing it well who am I to moan just seems to attract an unsavoury element. Hail Hail Hebcelt

I’m sure that Craig Gordon came up for a corner in the dying minutes against Hamilton Access,

    but i could be wrong

that is why I never replied to you about it or included you in the complaint.

It was poisonous and it remains poisonous.

It will come up again as we near elections or important political eents but there really is no need to bring it in for stuff that is just fluff.

We drew Inter today- shades of 67 and 72. We have enough to distract us.

  28. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    Catman,

The only reason the SFA are calling him up is the knee jerk reaction by the hun, they’re so split every ones a threat :)

  29. bournesouprecipe on

The Mike Cashley development is significant, and most likely related to the implosion of Sevco and Super Salary’s bizarre resignation, and subsequent circus.

He’s trying to get a settlement before their inaugural administration, which must be imminent with the latest shares flop, following the last shares flop.

  30. Craig Gordon has exclusively revealed that he lies in bed at night sweating and unable to sleep wondering if his performances so far will allow the Celtic support to forgive him for having the temerity to come up for a corner against his current team whilst a dirty stinking’ Jambo!
