Inter trepidation, Packy, Tommy, Joe & Patricia

809

Inter have hit a bit of form recently but comments coming out of Milan indicate their visit to Celtic Park is viewed with some trepidation.  The stadium’s Champions League reputation remains fresh in the memory, even if the team has been transformed since the last major victory over a truly top team two years ago.

A number of those who will play for Celtic on Thursday will have only seen those great European nights on television.  Playing in front of 60,000 Celtic fans will be a new experience.  Transforming this support into an energising force is our job.  Inter’s first objective will be to frustrate and quieten the crowd.  My hunch is that this will be difficult.

We have the line-up confirmed for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, which is at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  Topping the bill for the Q&A is Packy Bonnar, Jock Stein’s last signing, who made his debut on St Patrick’s Day 1979.

Packy’s Celtic and Ireland team-mate, Tommy Coyne, will also be taking part.  Tommy had an incredible career and speaks intelligently on football, and life in general.  We’re also delighted to have Joe Miller.  Joe played in the same Celtic team as Packy and Tommy.  Part of our historic Centenary Team, he also scored that unforgettable Scottish Cup Final winner.  More recently Joe formed the Association of Former Celtic Players.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein’s first game as Celtic manager, which takes place that week, we also have Jock’s personal friend and biographer, Archie Macpherson will speak about the great man.  If you’ve ever needed inspiration…..

I’m also delighted to confirm we have Celtic’s First Lady of Song, Patricia Ferns, who is making the journey over from Ireland for our night.

Let me know if you still need a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

I wasn’t having a dig at you and I’m sorry if it came across that way.

The press get everything from twitter, something gets started on there and before you know it, it’ll be a story this week. From nothing.

In The Simpsons, the character is Krusty the Clown. Correcting you is not the purpose of this post, though.

After reading your post I tried to recall the author of ” Coco the Clown” and remembered it was Baroness Orczy but, at first, I couldn`t remember the spelling of the surname. On Googling, it would now seem that she did NOT write the book. Problem is, I taught from that book to thirty children some thirty years ago. Other teachers commented on the `bravery` ( they meant stupidity) of teaching such an old fashioned book to modern teenagers. I mention that to show that this is no imagined event.

Why therefore, can I not find any mention of it on Google?

    CAN ANYONE HELP? PLEASE!!

Just 1 Ticket needed for the Inter Game Please!

    Hi Fellow Celtic Fans,

As my Father is not very well I find myself now travelling up to Glasgow from Hampshire on Wednesday evening and staying until Sunday. I know this is a very long shot indeed, but if there is any kind CQN soul out there who has access to a spare ticket (I know, I know, don’t laugh!) for the Inter match I would dearly Love to take in the game if at all possible. There are only hospitality tickets left at £145 +VAT, so this is a bit ‘Ouch!’ for me. If anyone by some miracle does have a spare ticket, could they please contact me at jim at xanzada dot com. Thanks in advance! :-)

No action to be taken by SPFL over Old Firm sectarian songs and banner

    By Euan Meah

    STV

    16 February 2015 13:24 GMT

The SPFL has confirmed it will never take action over the singing of offensive songs and the display of offensive banners at any future Old Firm matches.

The match at Hampden, which saw only 12 arrests for sectarian offences, was marred by the singing of sectarian songs that were predominantly, but not exclusively, heard in the Rangers end.

Celtic fans unfurled a banner inside the stadium, attempting but failing to satirise, the First World War’s Ode of Remembrance, with many green flares also being set off.

The SPFL did not act at the time of the game, saying that they were awaiting reports from the safety officer and match commander before deciding their next course of action.

Now the league body has said both clubs took the precautions that were expected ahead of the game and could not be held liable for the events at Hampden.

A spokesman for the SPFL told STV: “Official reports from the match are still awaited. However, it is clear from information already received that ‎all parties prepared properly and thoroughly for the match and, to date, we have not seen any evidence of any breach of SPFL Rules by either club.”

The SPFL has rules covering unacceptable conduct “at a stadium on the occasion of an official match”.

Onus is placed on both clubs to “ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that its supporters do not engage in unacceptable conduct”.

The SPFL considers whether any club accused of breaching the rule took the necessary steps to try and prevent such behaviour. If it is determined they did, action is unlikely to be taken.

Guidance is issued to SPFL clubs outlining what steps they should take to try and act in a pre-emptive manner towards any unacceptable conduct.

Amongst the 21 points covered include taking “all reasonably practicable steps, including in consultation with local police, to identify those who engage in unacceptable conduct” and applying “a proportionate sanction against a supporter who engages in unacceptable conduct and who has been, or is reasonably capable of being identified”.

One SPFL official who also has influence within the SFA intimated “in all likelihood both Old Firm clubs will always have performed these steps, therefore there is nothing much we can do about it. None of the clubs complained so it would seem that they were both happy with the proceedings”

He continued “It would seem reasonable that any future investigations should only be pursued if one of the clubs participating actually issues a complaint otherwise it is a waste of time resource and money”

Stuart Reagan added “Since the implementation of the five way agreement it has been clear that we are pinning our hopes on an Old Firm resurgence the game in Scotland needs it due to the money that it generates”

“The Old Firm fan knows exactly what he is paying for and what the global attraction of it is. It is vitally important not to mess with its ingredients.”

Corneilius Doncaster head of the SPFL to give him his full title backed up this assertion by asking “Would Coca Cola change its successful formula ? no clearly they would not. So why should we ? For all the cheeky monkeys out there with their phoney one up manship complaints, whether of a green or blue hue , if I may borrow an old Glasgow adage – if you fly with the craws you get shot with them. It is clearly better to have 55,000 craws than none at all”

  19. Haven’t read back but I gather there are some none too happy with Bonnar. Personally, I have been saddened by his contributions recently on Radio Scotland. I also find it difficult to respect any ex-Celtic player who goes to play in a game in the likes of Dubai as a member of the O.. F….

Imo, Bonnar, like a number of other ex-players have been overly critical of Celtic in order to build a career in the Scottish media.

By the way, our manager didn’t single out the game against the undead, for atmosphere. He included it among others, which he feels, are better than the EPL.

To sunstantiate, Bonner and Miller, like Walker persistantly sell their Celtic souls for the bigoted buck at the MSM table. W**kers the pair of them. Coyne, i’ve never heard.

  22. I think we should lighten up a bit re the Old Firm tag and its associations.

As far as ex-players are concerned, especially those involved prior to the death of RFC, they talk in terms of the matches, the crowd, the challenge, the atmosphere and the importance. If you are a professional it is exactly these types of situations that you yearn and strive for, pitting your talent against the next best, hoping to win the big prizes. To my recollection there is only one player who stayed he did not like the OF games and that was the great Bobby Murdoch. Even then it was the atmosphere surrounding the game that he hated more than the games themselves. Mind you he often didn’t like the games anyway as the ball was being murdered most of the time!

Anyway the point I’m trying to make is the players will always see recent events through the prism of their professional experience. If they say the game misses the OF matches, the competition, the thrill etc they’ll mean it and its not difficult surely to understand that? If their opinion is that it will be better when ‘Rangers’ are back in the top flight I don’t think that any reason to insult them. There are thousands of supporters who think it too.

Personally I’m glad we don’t play them and simultaneously miss not playing them!

You have either intentionally again chosen to miss the point or do not understand the point.

Whether I like or dislike current or former Celic personnel is irrelevant.

According to the MSM the manager allegedly made the quote you selected to back up your point – which I don’t think it does incidentally.

I drew the distinction between current and previously employees of the club. The current manager is clearly in a position where he is required to “toe the party line”.

Messrs Miller and Bonner are not constrained by the same restrictions.

They are drumbangers for the O** F***, and insult the intelligence of most Celtic supporters in the process.
