Inter will know they’ve been in a game

865

Someone asked me a few weeks ago if this was a must-win game.  Clearly it’s not, the cup games are must-win, as is the coming league game against Aberdeen, but tomorrow night is an important weathervane, indicating if the club is on the road to recovery.

Since that great high against Barcelona, we have faced Italian opposition twice, both in 2013, losing home games 0-3 to Juventus and Milan.  You can trace the decline in European performances through a subsequent Champions League group stage which concluded with five defeats, and last summer’s abject qualification campaign.

Indications are we are a better team now than we were in August, or even when qualifying from our Europa League group, but there is still an almighty task ahead tomorrow night.  I suspect none of this recent history will affect Ronny and his players.  The manager has told the players they can win.  Most of them are playing like they have a point to prove, all of them are looking forward to the challenge.

Inter will know they’ve been in a game.

Without Lustig we can only attack down the left

Without Mulgrew I hope that Efe is given that job of protecting the back four and he can come out with the ball. VVVD and Denayer will be doing none of that tomorrow night.

  6. Honestly think that James Forrest’s time may be up. From what I have seen of MacKay Steven, he is just as effective going forwards, doesn’t give up when he loses the ball and tracks back much more. He also doesn’t seem to get injured as much.

All just my opinion of course.

  8. If both fit for selection…. James Forrest every day of the week over GMS …

    That’s no disrespect to GMS…

Jamesy has champs league experience, approx 8 games or so against type quality opposition… is more direct in his style of play, and would retain possession better.

GMS is yet to prove on the euro stage. Maybe he would surprise me… But for me, Jamsey gets the nod

Just scrolled back and noticed you had replied to a post of mine from earlier.

I agree that our fullbacks will need protection that’s why I am going for Efe in place of Adam , I know nobody agrees with this change, but I think the big man is a better defender.

Also James for GMS as the only other change from the last game.

  10. Nevin got stitched up by a BBC cousin who correctly figured that Pat wasn’t as sharp as he thinks he is.

The little trick probably won’t be repeated for fear of the Jambo losing his job but regardless the BBC bigot got to put the boot in to us and sorted Nevin into the bargain.

Nevin couldn’t handle the fall-out and will not comment on this again. I contacted him after the semi final but he’s yet to reply.

He had already walked away from Celtic – citing a personal reason. Family comes first etc but nevertheless his decision making seems flawed.

He needs the media work and without a soul will go on with a middle of the road position on everything. The BBC know he is silenced on sectarianism so have no fear in giving him work.

He is neutered, culturally and morally. He knows his own failing and lives with them as a necessity. He is a lost Celt, his own stupidity and self esteem have taken something we’d hate to lose.

Tomorrow he will quietly be supporting Celtic. Alone. Miserably. Small.

I felt sorry for him when we met and pity him even now. A mouse.

Aye I have to admit to being quite peeved with wee Adam these last few games.

Mikael I have to admit looks like he is made of glass, shame as he is a top Bhoy.

It’ll be a tough game, canny decide on a team so it’s mair Toblerone for me.

Kojo – I wonder if Scott’s perceived failings at European level have been fitness-related.

Certainly, the sending off against Barca (although directly due to the wee fly kick), I felt was more down to poor positioning, and therefore possibly down to being off the pace a wee bit?

Certainly – other than the tail end of the game at the weekend – Celtic, and Broonie in particular, have looked fresher in the latter parts of more recent games.

Interesting to see if better fitness = better positioning = less mistakes

  13. Pictures of Stevie’s winning goal and Big Billy lifting the Big Cup on Reporting Scotland, with Bertie and Cairney predicting a Celtic win, and Broonie saying a draw ‘would be a fantastic result’.

Mancini on us, “they don’t play the classic long ball, they try to play on the pitch.”

We also have good technical players, according to Roberto.

  14. James Forrest is 23 years old, been in the team since 2010 and done nothing of note.

Time to move him on 1 good game in how many when fit ???

Eloquently put – he could redeem himself by publicly saying what happened, but he has no platform (that would continue to pay him), so he is stuck between what he knows is right, and what pays.

You’d think he could make enough from his Sky / Chelsea connections to allow him to freely discuss what happened, but maybe the wee football media world would not countenance breaking the code of silence in any forum…plus he probably likes the money more.

  19. Talking of technical players, the PSG game last night wasn’t the best in terms of goal-mouth incidents, but there was a lot to be enjoyed in witnessing the fantastic technique of players such as Cavani and Zlatan, and Hazard for Chelsea.

And Courtois gave a great display of goalkeeping, keeping Chelsea in the tie, probably as favourites now to qualify.

On BT Sport in Ireland, so presumably also on our near by offshore island.

  25. Evening all

Stomach beginning to churn for tomorrow. Aw Naw pitched a scenario about the game being lost by half time tomorrow and that haunts my thoughts. I was at the Salzburg match all of three months ago and our start was as bad as it was against Juve and Milan.

Beating weak opponents at home in the way we have gives no clue as to how we are doing – we went into those other games with some good recent results as well

But we do look a bit better and from SoT’s reports ( amongst others) I get the impression that Internazionale are more fragile than the other teams and also have some defensive weaknesses to.

Failure to avoid defeat tomorrow might not be such a bad result. If we collapse a la Juve and Milan then we have made no progress.

4-1 Celtic or, er, 4-1 Inter

    Jimbo67

  26. Honest prediction for tomorrow

    Celtic 1 – 2 Inter

I just hope we do our selves justice. And hope the fans back the team the full 90minutes, regardless ..

  27. One of Mancini’s greatest victories in his time at Citeh was the 6-1 away to Manure, who were almost reckless in the way they kept trying to attack City.

He knows how to exploit the space left by teams that overcommit.

So, patience and controlled attacking when the opportunity presents itself is the way to go, for me.

  28. I think we are strong enough through the middle in defence. The problems we have are in dealing with wide balls into the box. This is when every player needs to be on their toes and not caught ball watching. It will be a big night for Izzy and Adam. If both are on their game, I think we will win.
