International football is a tax on Celtic

339

Steve Clarke made the right call to leave Leigh Griffiths out of his Scotland squad for the right reasons, saying, “I feel we should just give him a little bit more time to settle into the role again at Celtic…a fully fit, firing, sharp Leigh Griffiths will always be good for us.”  It is difficult to get a quiet period of normality when you are a high profile football player, but that’s what Leigh needs, while simultaneously getting back to what he does as a top football player.

International football is a tax on Celtic, as more of our players feature in full or youth squads than our direct competitors, most of whom get international fortnights off.  It’s a pity Callum McGregor and James Forrest are not also rested.

  1. It feels a bit like some think that we could solve every single one of our complex problems simply by spending a wadge of cash on players

  2. Go tell the Spartim on

Maybe the new signings will just get us over there, would you be surprised if PL made them pay their own way there.

Obviously we are entering the squeeky bum time, both in transfers and setting down a marker for the season ahead, we’ve already blown one good chance, lets hope we’re working away in the background to make sure we can kick on from two good results or recover if they dont go our way, though i wouldnt bet Dave Kings money on that being the case.

  3. Go tell the Spartim on

So thats why we’re keeping all that money in the bank…………………………………………

  4. Why did the club let Hickey leave for Hearts just over a year ago?,

He is a product of Lennoxtown, played in the same side as Kadi Dembele, apparently the side also had a highly rated keeper who we also lost, to Birmingham City.

How important is JF to us? Brilliant player. How many important goals does he get? And he’s stayed! Work rate’s amazing.

I would be looking at spending a good bit of our cash in the bank, on setting up a thorough, comprehensive, professional scouting system. I also wish our manager would stop making false promises of imminent signings that fail to materialise.

Maybe he was at the wind up after the pelters he’s taken…. Lol…. It was originally quoted by a certain daily rag….

    Debateable list, but when you’re sitting on double figures of millions it’s not surprising the window is the only real Celtic topic in town;

    GK – stronger.

    LB – weaker?

    RB – weaker?

    CB – same as

    CM – same as

    DM – same as

    AM – same as

    WL – weaker ?

    WR – same as

    Striker – same as

Could this be why he’s hoping to sign players?.

  9. After Cluj, despair ,wailing and blame were abundant on CQN.Decent results against AIK and the place was positive and rosy. Two days after Hearts and two days before AIK, the happiness is disappearing quickly and doom and gloom are back in pole position.

Chavez summed it up superbly the other day:-)

The problem is, each bad window just compounds our problems. Since Brendan Rodgers he had some big failures across several windows.

    1. Failure to replace Mikel Lustig. Ralston & Gamboa both had faith put in them by Rodgers but never made the grade.

    2. Decline in quality at CB. He inherited Ambrose, Mulgrew, Sviatchenko, Simunovic, Boyata & Ajer. Some would argue that keeping the likes of Ambrose, Mulgrew & Sviatchenko would be a sign of lacking ambition. They are probably right, but letting them go and replacing them with Hendry, Compper & a loan signing has left us short. Rodgers then doubled down on Boyata and insisted we keep him rather than taking that 9 million and running to the bank.

    3. Failure to find a second LB. He put a lot of faith in Calvin Miller at one point but gave up on him. Re-Signed Izzy when he was past his best.

    4. Waited too long to sign John McGinn. We should have been chasing McGinn since 2015.

    5. Brendan Rodgers treated Celtic as a stepping stone so favored short-term solutions. Signing Benkovic, Burke, Weah & Toljan on loan. Bringing back Izzy.

    6. Celtic’s reported strategy of overambition under Congerton. Chasing players like Piccini who were never going to pick the SPFL over La Liga.

Lenny said it in his post match interview to the media. Not for the first time this transfer window, he has hinted at signings that fail to materialise. What’s going on?

  12. CaddingtonCommon on

Lack of transfer activity is not Lennybhoy’s fault. He passes on what he is told in strict secrecy. He does not make it up.

  13. HeknowsWHOknows on

    Delaney,

I’ll be feckd if I know but the sooner the window closes the better.

Oh and hope we sign quality as quoted. Fingers crossed.

    Big games to think about.

    Hail Hail

  14. If we get through this window with the fullbacks we needed I’d grade the window a C+

My point is, previous failures have stacked up leaving us to sort out several positions in the same window. It’s not easy.

We need to re-shape the recruitment department and look to go from there.

Get rid of some deadwood too.

  15. if boli boli cost allegedly £3m and killie value greg john taylor at £3m could we not just do a swop deal and that would please a lot of bhoys and ghirls on here.

  16. Delaneys Dunky on

    HeKnows

Agree with on all points you stated there.

Still think we are weaker defensively than last season though. Thought we would have strengthened there.

  17. BSR – I’ve taken your list and made it my own (a la Simon Cowell)

GK – stronger – Let’s see what version we get of FF. First game good but wasn’t a burning priority on the bucket list.

LB – weaker? – Definitely. We haven’t got one between 3 converted left wingers (Boli, Hayes and Miller) and a CM (Callum)

RB – weaker? – YEP. The Tache and his profile would be out of our reach financially. Hard to replace but we don’t seem to have tried too hard. Yet.

CB – same as. Mmmmmm. Boyata, a Belgian internationlist. Not sure yet.

CM – same as. Mmmmm..An older Scott Brown and a moody Ollie Ntcham?

DM – same as. Need an upgrade imho…however, where is my man Kouassi?

AM – same as. Aye but no sign of Tam Rogic, Turnball was a sore one and hate to see us without RC as he is a fulcrum.

WL – weaker ? – Seems so. We’ve demotivated SS but Mikey Johnston has come on leaps and bounds (withoiut the decision-making fixed though)

WR – same as. Stronger? But where the heck is Arzani? or Schved the wonderboy?

Striker – same as. Bayo an upgrade and Leigh back with us.

Could this be why he’s hoping to sign players? – Feels all a bit reactive….

    Back the manager ffs.

  18. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Should we not be demanding we get more out of the players we have already signed e.g……

    C Hazard, J Hendry, C Miller, A Ralston, T Rogic, E Kouassi, M Shved, L Connel, J Hayes, S Sinclair, D Arzani,

Thats 11 players who so far this season have contributed virtually nothing, but never mind that, just go out and buy a whole load more, that’ll fix it…

    @ TIMALOY29 on 27TH AUGUST 2019 2:50 PM

I think it is difficult to put a lot of that on BR (although he certainly had his faults).

It was clear that BR wanted better quality (he talked of it often enough), but what we ended up with was nowhere near what was required. However, in most instances, that was due to us opting for a cheap option (Hendry, Gamboa, Compper all cost circa £1m each).

In BR’s time at the club we only signed 4 players for £2m or more (I’m not sure if Bayo came in over this price, but also not sure in BR was involved in the signing given all the rumours since his departure).

On not selling Boyata: unsure why Celtic fans do not support BR in this instance. We sold Armstrong and didn’t replace him. Where was the impetus for BR to sell Boyata in the knowledge that he likely would not be replaced? Great, an improved balance sheet and a decrease in the quality of the team.

  23. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

@ ROCK TREE BHOY on 27TH AUGUST 2019 3:13 PM

You are referencing youth players in the most part (C Hazard, C Miller, A Ralston, L Connel, D Arzani).

Of the others, we know J Hendry isn’t fancied and is not good enough (unless as 5th choice) and Hayes is and always has been a pool player (he also is neither a good winger or a good LB but a jack of all trades).

Rogic and Kouassi are injured and will ikely play a part. Shved will have a part to play (hopefully).

Sinclair has been black balled- by all accounts his contract was extended by Pedro to get a fee and it has backfired.

We are trying to achieve 10IAR. We have money. Why are we suggesting relying on youth? Why not try and buy a couple of first team players to push the team on?

  25. Just managed now to get on the blogs today and surprise , surprise Celtic have bailed out of the Greg Taylor transfer. We sold a guy for £25m and the player we are chasing to replace him is a player that Lawell does,nt think is worth £1m …….why the f@@k are we chasing him in the first place then. No ambition does ‘nt even scratch the surface of describing Celtic under Lawell . HE NEEDS CHASED ! We are playing Them on Sunday and I bet most supporters like myself would bite the hand off you for taking a draw ! but secretly hoping we escape a mauling . Yeah read that again , thats where we are at and there are still people who wont say anything against Lawell . Is it because They have vastly improved ? NO. We have fallen back the past 2 or 3 transfer windows . Any team can have a bad window , we have had 2 or 3 now , if that doesnt tell you something , god help us
