International retirement would be no hardship

197

The largest impediment to Celtic building up a sustainable run of form is the incessant games players are faced with.  They will have competed in 14 European games by mid-December, with only Newco in Scotland doing anything similar.  Uniquely here for Celtic players, the demands of international football mean that these breaks are often more onerous, not less – ask Tom Rogic.

Scott Brown has retired from the international game but the rest of the first choice regulars are busy every international break. Of the more fringe players, Jozo Simunovic’s vacillations between Croatia and Bosnia have left him with time to rest those knees, while Scott Sinclair only represented England at youth level.

I’m not sure what work Leigh Griffiths needs to do on his fitness but hard training sessions are not permitted during spells when the team is playing seven or eight games per month.  Dropping out of the Scotland setup will allow Leigh a full week of endurance and cardio work, his first since preseason, instead of being untaxed as a squad player for Alex McLeish’s Scotland side.

Leigh has nothing to prove at international level but at 28, he knows the most important thing in his professional life is to continue scoring goals for Celtic.  International retirement would be no hardship.

My Steamies career ended , I think , in `69.

I was drapped . It still rankles. :-)

The leftback you mention was probably after my time.

Still in touch regularly with Steamies guys all over the globe.

Crazy when you think about it.

    Were you Gallardia ?

    Catch you later .

  3. Good morning CQN from a very mild Garngad

Leigh, Leigh, super Leigh. Weep done wee man, for whatever reasons.

The scotland set up from team to organisers/ football Association is a cesspit of cheats/tax fraudsters and charlatans.

I would urge other Celtic players to leave the set up as well, why would you want to be associated with that lot.

On a brighter note day 3 of my 4 day week before NYC on 15th

I am now viewing the site advert free and no screen jumping, what a difference.

    I was from Gorbals ST.

I probably was delivering your milk ( Scottish Farmers barrow) as our run was Hospital St, Thistle St. Crown St. I probably delivered Crerands’ milk also.

Didn’t know Bobby Collins was from Govanhill.

Did you know Cathy Ferguson (Holding), she went to St. Lukes, probably your vintage?

The 3 parishes, St. John’s, St. Francis and St. Luke’s were regarded as the largest Gaeltacht area not only in the U.K. but also in Ireland.

  11. Jobo, thanks for your early morning EK report. My day does not start till I get your report even though I’m siiting in Indonesia with mid 30’s temp and six hours ahead of you.

Hate these international breaks but always want Scotland to win, be glad when we have REAL fitba back. Support LG for his position but also support any other Celts who play for their country.

We were too poor to have milk delivered :-)

    We had to steal it.

I was a milk boy in Castlemilk too. All my teachers felt it would interfere with my studies but none of them offered to pay waht I’d miss out on by not doing it.

I blame running up and down the tenement steps all over East Casrlemilk (Machrie, Ballantay and Tormusk), carrying up to 24 pints of milk at a time, for giving me whatever sporting stamina I had. Never liked it at the time, apart from the money, but I can see its advantages now that I don’t have to do it anymore.

  13. Fess19 – thank you. Actually it’s forecast to reach 19 or 20 degrees here today which, for October is pretty decent. Enjoy your day in the sun.

  14. MACJAY1

No not Gallardia, but I was known for my daisy cutting passes and gracefulness (tongue in cheek).

I ran the team years after 69 (tell you the interesting story one day), Good to know your are still in touch with some. They were an amazing talented bunch, playing for fun. I remember the 100/200yds Scottish champion, also a boxer played. You knew Gerry Duffy. The guy that ran the team taught in Holyrood. He had Alan Brazil playing for team as a talented school boy. Many played senior football then. It would not happen now.

I played for Gallardia for several seasons. Many happy memories.

Jim Brogan was re-instated as an amateur to play rugby after he retired from football. He played for Gallardia in the Saturday Morning League Summer League. No bad player: nearly as good as wee Biff.

Did you know Jimmy Mears who played for Steamboats? We were schoolmates.

  16. What a difference.a 6-0 result and international week makes to the blog. I’m gonnae see if Dafabet will take ten quid at 49 to 1 on Nega2 not being on before Sunday ?

Yes, Gerry was a character. I remember, we had a corner and Gerry was standing in front of CH, he wrapped his arms round the back of him and through himself backwards, with Gerry falling on CH. Ref awarded a penalty to Steamboats.

I didn’t know that they met each year. I would love to attend one of the reunions if diary suits.

Jimmy Mears rings a bell, though I only knew many by their first name. The athlete was a well known runner for Scotland, I must google his namr.
