Internazionale 1-0 Celtic

800

Inter scored a breakaway goal from Guarin, who should have earlier received a red card for deliberately striking Stefan Johansen on the face, on the 88th minute to win this tie 4-3 on aggregate.  But despite playing for the majority of the game with 10 men, after Virgil van Dijk’s 36th minute red card, Celtic looked comfortable throughout.  Man of the match Nir Bitton dictated play for long periods.

The best actual chance of the game fell to Gary Mackay-Steven on the 7th minute when a cross-field pass from Emilio Izaguirre was misjudged by the Inter defence, allowing Mackay-Steven to control and nip clean through on Carrizo but the keeper spread himself to block.

Stuart Armstrong had a strong penalty claim denied on 14 minutes.  As he prepared to shoot, Santon grabbed him by the shoulder but the referee gave the first notice that he would give the home team the benefit of the doubt all night.

Inter took time to get into the game but Icardi almost connected to a blasted cross ball by Santon as the home team made their first chance, on 19 minutes.

Two minutes later Celtic had their second penalty claim on the evening when John Guidetti was held but again the referee was in no mood to award a decision against the home team.

Ultimately the red card may have determined the outcome of this game but if anyone expected Celtic to collapse afterwards, they were mistaken.  Inter enjoyed their best spell of the game between van Dijk’s 36th minute red and halftime, but the man advantage was not evident from the flow of play.  Craig Gordon made a stunning save from a header, which was ultimately found to be offside, on 38 minutes, and two minutes before the break Gordon saved again at his near post after Jason Denayer blocked an initial shot.

Needing a goal while a man down requires a difficult tactical balance.  Celtic decided to keep things tight until later in the second period.  Gordon saved twice, from Hernanes and Guarin, before the latter retaliated when Stefan Johansen nutmeged him but hitting the Celtic player with a forearm smash.

Ronny Deila sent Kris Commons on for the final 13 minutes and, with Celtic struggling to test the keeper, the midfielder tried his luck from 35 yards but Carrizo was untroubled.

With Celtic pressing for what would have been a winner, Inter broke with speed.  A Guarin shot from 25 yards thundered into the top corner, leaving Gordon with no chance.

    Refs stick together.

    We got the blame for their ‘strike’ in Scotland.

    I think our card has been marked sine then.

    That is a point I had never thought about.

    Dallas is probably working harder than ever to undermine Celtic.

    I truly despair at times at the blatant cheating and corruption, it is getting a Lot worse.

    Tonight was an incredible first season performance by a Team, and it is not even near Ronny’s Team, yet.

    This Celtic Cause will defy all logic, of that I am sure.

  2. a light insanity on

    I didn’t infer anything about Paul in that last comment. Usual shit timing on my part. Keep up the tunes ffm. Apart from hippy stuff (van morrison excepted). Matt McGinn awesome.

  3. When BBC Shortbread arsehole Al Lamont asks the 2nd question at Press Conference,”there was a flare set off at the Celtic end….”,we should know the enemy is right in front of you every day . .Nothing about an embarassing red card,a possible penalty,and a goalscorer who should have been bagged,for the worst challenge of the night…..nah it’s fine,some fannies will agree with us and phone Snyde tomorrow

    Time to eat humble pie.

    I forecast that Ronny would win the quadruple.

    I was wrong. He will win us the treble, by way of compensation! ;)

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The Treble will be won with a style and panache that will whet the appetite for the Future, however long it lasts.
    11v11 tonight Celtic would have went through, that is remarkable for a new Manager just in the door. Neil left Ronny a Good squad, the ante has now been upped to become a first team regular.
    I think wee Jamesie is a smashing player, confident and on form, and I won’t forget his performance away to Udinese, tonight he looked short of a lot. The Ronny Doctor will sort him out, I’m sure.
    Efe Ambrose, Brilliant.
  5. Having suffered an ignoble VVd-like sending-off, presumably for using swearies in a previous deleted post (22.56 archive fans), I will now regurgitate my precise player-appraisals for the sake of lurking SMSM hack-scum who might want to write (plagarise) about the evening’ s footy rather than maintaining arousal over the fleeting pyro entertainment…
    The Hoops v Inter Milan & Incorporated Referee:
    The Cat – immense. all the angles covered, all the confidence in the world, STUNNING reflex saves. All we need is for him to come up for corners late on and everyone will be happy…
    Izzy – Wee hero, rattled up and down the line all night, solid, in their faces, took no snash or prisoners.
    Matthews – Recovered well from early knock, tireless, always looking to create and bomb forward.
    Denayer- Looked nervy and unsure again, seemed to hide rather than impose himself. Maybe staying with us another season would help rather than seeking EPl glamour with Citeh.
    VVD – Victim of Fanny with whistle and subservient agenda. Class personified before cards, calming influence just what we need at rarified level.
    Broon – Rousing leader of mhen and bhoys. Full of character and example. No little composure on ball, either.
    Bitton- We seem to be developing a real class act. Cooler than the other side of your pillow, heart-in-mouth posession at times but can pick a gem of a pass. Hugely impressive.
    Jo Hansen – anonymous for most but GOOD anonymous- doing the spadework, running the lines, harassing, fearless; growing on me from my initial headless chicken summation.
    Armstrong – Great self-belief and composure, will be a tremendous midfielder for us in the Hay mould if he keeps on keepin’ on.
    Mackay-Steven – Cracking attitude and pace, penetration and keen as a ferret to get at them. Shame we had to sacrifice him. Will eclipse James Forrest in weeks if he continues to grow into his Celtic jersey with such regular impact.Unlucky with that clipped chance- on second thoughts should have gone round keeper on his good foot and cut it in.
    Guidetti – Hahahahahahaha, 40K a week!? Belter, big man! NO pace, but great attitude and seems to understand wjhat it is to wear the Hoops. But wear them at the same price as others or go seek yer wedge elsewhere.
    Jamsie Forrest- Disappointed to see him toil. Thought it was a good move, use his pace and directness to hustle them but it never worked out that way; he appeared off the paces, lacking. Shame, we really needed him. He’s 24 now, can’t hide under the promising youngster shade much longer, needs to produce again, big time.
    Efe – Struck terror in many hearts when he appeared but was the epitome of calm and assured defending, winning ariel challenges, positioning himslef with great aptitude. Get used to it, becasue come the CL qualifiers it’ll be Efe and Chas Mulgrew as our centre-back pairing.
    Kris commons – Almost the impact we wanted, unlucky with the surprise long strike but no support from 8 tired men around him to manufacture much of an impact. Credit for sticking it to that referee imposter at the end.
    Ronny Deila – please continue to confound me and the other doubters as you forge a young squad into a formidable unit capable of competing at the top table. I’m being persuaded by this evolution we see before our eyes.
    Inter Milan are no great shakes in comparison to legends of the past but they’re still full of top-class players and more than a match for the EPL’s (snigger) top sides. NONE of whom they can meet bar Everton in the next round becasue they all got pumped by teams of less worth than Inter, as inter will demonstrate on Sunday by beating Fiorentina and having many in Scotland realise they are right up there – SMSM wanks, I mean you.
    I posted about Salzburg being the last quality team to see us up close then meet again and hammer us. Inter was the next big test and we more than stood up to it. Boys becoming mhen?
    Let’s seal up the Scottish treble and look to the Champions League – I believe we might just be ready for it this time around, with no fear and plenty to bring to the big table.
  6. James Forrest should not wear our jersey again.Non trier tonight IMO ,unforgivable.Johansen running past him late in the game,he is fresh ,let down his Club ,team mates and supporters.GMS has taken his starting spot,if that is his response,get rid.
  7. !!Bada Bing!! 01:06
    I noticed that James was really struggling for fitness, and he came on with 30 to go.
    He has excellent competition for a place now, he better get fitter/better or he will be out next window.
    Ronny is giving him a chance, IMO, he won’t take it.
    Apols, film is Melancholia.
    Beautiful film.
    ====================
    Somebody else has seen Melancholia?
    Man, this blog never ceases to amaze me.
    It’s epic and soulful, apocalyptic and resonating – like some sort of existential trip.
    The film, I mean, not the blog; it’s just a trip; somedays joyful, most, bad acid ;))
  9. Last note of the night for Ayrshire Tims/Interlopers – aside from Scruffy Duffys, who’ve dropped sky (mental!) the Wick pub in Prestwick looks like it’s fast becoming a Celtic shop again – a good few dozen Tims in there watching the game.
    Just a heads-up for discerning Tims and those looking to avoid the riff-raff who inhabit Ayr’s Market Inn…
    ;))
  10. I thought Celtic were magnificent.
    Next season, hopefully we go under the radar, and teams underestimate us in the CL.
    Ronny, John, Johnny K and Jim as well are working miracles, IMO.
    Big Johnny K was instructing Ronny what to do when we had big Virgil sent off. We have, possibly, the best little dugout in Europe, fingers crossed.
  11. Sandman,
    If you’re seriously telling me you respect that film, then I will never antagonise you ever again.
    An astounding piece of work from the master.
    Love it, again and again.
    This is his best movie imo.
    End of the world, in full graphic detail, and how we still let out sibling rivalries spoil the big ending… :)
    Seriousy though, I think that is the most amazing artistic movie ever made. Surpasses ole Speilberg in his genre.
    Beauty of it is this:
    I’m too scared to watch his other films.
    HH
  12. Have to say, I don’t think black slugs and giant in your face black and white aliens were anything to do with Melancolia.
    Just the moon, and the beauty of life.
    Wonderful film, based around humanity.
    Jesus rules – He would like this film, I reckon. But of course, I can’t say that for sure. More important things to be worrying about just now. In Israel.
  13. Rational Thought on
    Why are we moaning so much at the GB? When it was the ultras that let off the flare?
    I used to be of the opinion “we have our own idiots clamp down on them too” but now I actually don’t care about them. DEILA delt with the question as best he could, he should not have to deal with that level of loaded question. Celtic Board should be refusing to give interviews to the BBC as they are highlighting minor issues which will see us get fined yet them, like BT sports, refuse to condemn the h-xs and even claim that the famine song is just a bit of banter fed up of them. Having said that if you sacked all of them bar paddy bonner, Michelle Stweart and Richard gordon, and you employed those 3 each day of the week the program would be FAR fairer on Celtic. Willie Miller has always been slightly negative about Celtic but nowhere near as bad as traynor, tonight he sounded nearly as bad as traynor. Especially with the guff “inter weren’t pushing, sending off changed nothing”, er willie old senile FOOL before the sending off we where as likely to score as them, which with a bit of luck would have seen us win the game….
    At least Hargreaves and long hair boy called one thing right; without the sending off inter where there for the taking. I am perplexed why they think at 10 men we should have been attacking more, do they not know we do not have the quality of player bought by epl money to actually attack and control the game when missing one player due to bad refereeing?
    GMS should not have been subbed it should have been guidetti but I also understand why he did not make that change, and possibly if it had just been Deila’s decision it would have been Guidetti but it was a decision made by consensus of each of the coaching staff….
    Scottish society seems to like labels for players more than the continent it seems for some reason in Britain we can’t stand people not being in little boxes possibly.
  14. Rational Thought,
    Good comment.
    Ronny Deila wants the Treble. The Europa Cup run this season was a bonus. Ronny made a decision, that IMO, was not an easy one to take, given that GMS had started so well, Ultimately, given that we were in the game for longer than we really should have been. Ronny made the right choice. I like Ronny, he doesn’t take the obvious route.
    Nir Bitton is thriving under this Celtic Management team, like many players are, Nir was taking that ball in dangerous areas and making things happen. Brilliant.
    But did we listen?
    Journalists scared for their lives are firing the information at us, but we take time to digest it.
    Much better to watch naked fannies parading around for the sake of a brilliant film from the States. Auto-correction has been enabled. Independently. By your own government.
  17. Italian teams have always “gotten” to the referees………this one more than usual. Celtic should demand an inquiry……not likely to happen though.
    Still…..it’s a lot more fun with a “Ronny” team to watch play.
  23. Ronny – I said last week that you’ll go on and join that gallant band – you will.
    Couple of wee points…James Forrest is a ‘Celtic’ player with loads of ‘Celtic’ stuff…he could be Celtic’s Kevin Gallacher…thing is…KG played under Jim McLean who knew that, to get the best out of KG…the ba had to be played for KG to run onto…not, to Kevin with his back to goals and with 2 or 3 hun brutes queuing behind you waiting to kick lumps out ye…so, Ronny…manage JF…properly.
    VVD – Is a classy looking player…against SPFL fodder…move the quality of opposition up a notch and, he dizny look to clever…his sending off tonight was worthy of a kick in the haw-maws from Ronny…imho
