Internazionale 1-0 Celtic

800

Inter scored a breakaway goal from Guarin, who should have earlier received a red card for deliberately striking Stefan Johansen on the face, on the 88th minute to win this tie 4-3 on aggregate.  But despite playing for the majority of the game with 10 men, after Virgil van Dijk’s 36th minute red card, Celtic looked comfortable throughout.  Man of the match Nir Bitton dictated play for long periods.

The best actual chance of the game fell to Gary Mackay-Steven on the 7th minute when a cross-field pass from Emilio Izaguirre was misjudged by the Inter defence, allowing Mackay-Steven to control and nip clean through on Carrizo but the keeper spread himself to block.

Stuart Armstrong had a strong penalty claim denied on 14 minutes.  As he prepared to shoot, Santon grabbed him by the shoulder but the referee gave the first notice that he would give the home team the benefit of the doubt all night.

Inter took time to get into the game but Icardi almost connected to a blasted cross ball by Santon as the home team made their first chance, on 19 minutes.

Two minutes later Celtic had their second penalty claim on the evening when John Guidetti was held but again the referee was in no mood to award a decision against the home team.

Ultimately the red card may have determined the outcome of this game but if anyone expected Celtic to collapse afterwards, they were mistaken.  Inter enjoyed their best spell of the game between van Dijk’s 36th minute red and halftime, but the man advantage was not evident from the flow of play.  Craig Gordon made a stunning save from a header, which was ultimately found to be offside, on 38 minutes, and two minutes before the break Gordon saved again at his near post after Jason Denayer blocked an initial shot.

Needing a goal while a man down requires a difficult tactical balance.  Celtic decided to keep things tight until later in the second period.  Gordon saved twice, from Hernanes and Guarin, before the latter retaliated when Stefan Johansen nutmeged him but hitting the Celtic player with a forearm smash.

Ronny Deila sent Kris Commons on for the final 13 minutes and, with Celtic struggling to test the keeper, the midfielder tried his luck from 35 yards but Carrizo was untroubled.

With Celtic pressing for what would have been a winner, Inter broke with speed.  A Guarin shot from 25 yards thundered into the top corner, leaving Gordon with no chance.

Ronny – I said last week that you’ll go on and join that gallant band – you will.

Couple of wee points…James Forrest is a ‘Celtic’ player with loads of ‘Celtic’ stuff…he could be Celtic’s Kevin Gallacher…thing is…KG played under Jim McLean who knew that, to get the best out of KG…the ba had to be played for KG to run onto…not, to Kevin with his back to goals and with 2 or 3 hun brutes queuing behind you waiting to kick lumps out ye…so, Ronny…manage JF…properly.

VVD – Is a classy looking player…against SPFL fodder…move the quality of opposition up a notch and, he dizny look to clever…his sending off tonight was worthy of a kick in the haw-maws from Ronny…imho

Ronny – ye hivny won anything yet but, as I said you’ll go on to join that gallant band…bye.

Agnostics are smarter than atheists, at least philosophically. Evidence of how evil often doesn’t win is that even amongst the upper echelons of the cults of esotericisim their are a minority who believe their theology yet dont believe they are superior to the rest of us, dont believe in killing people or promoting physical or other forms of abuse this just shows that even if your theology is widly twisted and at root evil, a good heart can triumpth over the cult some are in…. I certainly wouldn’t blame most, bar a small minority, of the blue lodge masons who either stick faithfully to their Christianity or Muslim etc faiths or even their atheism, whilst not seeing how the theology blatantly contradicts their actual main religion or atheism respectively. Also I believe the theology of these sects gets worse the further up/sideways one goes from blue lodges. Its not the beliefs that scare me (well mostly its not, some of the upper echelons have messed up beliefs in and of themselves) but the effects of those beliefs.

A person might claim to “not believe” in a lucifer but say there are three sects, one sect “just” believes that he wants folk to have sex with consenting adults without any commitment and enjoy physical pleasures through out their life if they dont hurt others this first sect is relatively harmless, the second believes that they can become their own gods via self meditation, again relatively harmless, but the third sect believes they can only become a god via sacrificing the rest of us, clearly not harmless, and the fact a person claims they dont believe in a lucifer wont save them from the loony who does and thinks they need to kill atheists and Christians in order for them to become their own god.

When it comes to these cults there are hundreds of sects some with inherently harmless theologies and some with inherently harmful theologies and others with ambigious theologies that can either be harmful or harmless depending on who is doing the interpreting. Now in the harmless theologies their will be bad apples who twist it to make it more akin to the harmful theologies of other esoteric sects, and vice versa with the harmful sects however its more likely the “good hearted” estoerics will end up in the appropriate sect but not guaranteed, we are talking percentages. I use “good” relatively.

  5. The dissection of the Celtic team, reduced to 10 men by the Scottish media is disgraceful.

OK we went out at the 32 stage – so did Liverpool and Spurs, clubs with resources that dwarf ours.

I am not so unhappy that we are out, in fact it may well be a blessing in disguise.

With Ronny, we now can see in which direction the club is going – we have a new footballing philosophy and a strategy that will bring in the ‘right’ sort of players.

So our defined targets over the next six months are clear and achievable:

    1) Win the Treble – a great achievement in the manager’s first season.

    2) Sort out the ‘wheat from the chaff’ in our squad – i.e. let at least half a dozen move on.

    3) Determine the futures of VVD, Denayer and Guidetti.

    4) Seek out and sign replacements if necessary

    5) Prepare in good time for the CL qualifiers in July.

    6) Qualify for CL groups.

I am more optimistic at this stage of the season than I have been for a number of years.

Ronny has ‘cast he die’ and we now play in a manner befitting our great tradition – if we improve as much over the next six months, as we have in the last – we WILL get to the promised land of the CL next season, and, with a bundle of prizes ‘in the bag’

  11. I watched the game delayed on Celtic TV, having been cloistered all afternoon.

I’m glad I avoided the score as I kept hoping for a quick break and an unlikely win.

There’s no point on me posting about the abject performance from the refereeing crew.

Even the normally placid Paul in his leader questions the refs motives.

However, I would like to state that we looked a very good, well organized, energetic and purposeful side tonight.

The players know what is expected of them and in general go about their roles with enthusiasm.

We have made huge strides since the qualification stages last year.

Fitness, tactics and the execution of them are all far superior to early season.

Brown has matured into a team leader and the rest of the side take their lead from him.

The Arab additions have slotted in nicely and when they are as fit as the rest of the side they will raise our game even further.

We are well placed to kick on from here and secure our place as the foremost team in Scotland and hopefully next season as a team to be feared in the Champions League.

The appointment of Ronny and JC, can’t resist that, and the the addition of John Kennedy will be looked upon as visionary a couple of years from now.

Surely, no one has any lingering doubts about Ronny’s methods and his commitment to fielding attractive Celtic sides which play with high energy and not a little creativity?

  12. Doh, sometimes us Tims need to calm down, behave, be less offensive, less in the face.

Bird frollicking with petec, the headlines would have rocked the ornothology World.

  19. Just up in downtown Milan. Celtic did great with 10 men and kept their composure knowing every 50 50 decision was with the home team. The ref struck me as the Slovakian Willie Collum….although he can’t see penalties with eyes in the back of his head.

With hindsight we should have kept GMS on as later when we replaced Guidetti we ended up with Forrest and effectively a passenger. I hope RD can work on JF and have him perform before the end of the season or its time to put him out on loan or sell as he is not fulfilling his potential and is indeed going back the way.

Brown, Bitton, Armstrong, Johansen, Matthews ran themselves to a standstill. Efe and Jason were solid and kept it simple. Gordon was inspiring and gave the defence confidence. JG chased everything but he needs to find a yard of pace. GMS looked good but will rue the chance.

VIrgil harshly booked. Means you cannot go near an Inter player otherwise you know the outcome with a dodgy ref. VIrgil does not to be Beckanbauer every time….sometimes just clear your lines. He sometimes loses the first yard as he is not anticipating and then it’s too late. A bit like the first leg. This lack of focus is the difference between a £5M player and a £15M player.

Anyway let’s regroup and take care of McInnes and Aberdeen.

  20. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    Morning,all.

Not read back, and only got to watch the match on a recording. PAUL67 is bang-on. The ref made his intentions plain from the start with the two penalty decisions.

Had they been at the other end,we would have been penalised both times and probably been down to nine men before the ref got his claws into VVD.

A great tackle, then a tangle of legs means two yellows, what a load of crap. Disgraceful decisions the four of them. And he followed it up with a fair few others as the game went on.

The reshuffle went according to the coaching manual, but I think-with hindsight!-that Ronny got it wrong. We could have continued till half-time with Biton in defence and either Armstrong or Johansen dropping back alongside Broonie. That would have bought us some time to get the thinking caps on.

    But heyho…

Second half we kinda lost our way between say 60-80 minutes, but looked capable of a shock winner. Then they got it,and worthy of winning any match.

Another to add to our list of glorious failures.

Btw,what is it’s Slovak refs? Do they blame us for sending back their Gift From God wi a Glasgow accent,or summat? Or do they just blame us for sending them Snake Plissken?

  21. kdc - Tully's corner on

Ain’t it ironic that the guy with probably the biggest hand in getting us to the knockout stages had the biggest hand in knocking us out. Big hands Gordon.

    WITS out

P.s. I appreciate the dynamic was very different, but, did any one else think we looked more solid in the middle with efe and jason there than vvd?

P.p.s. Bitton, another kdc top tip scaling the heights now and getting appreciated now. SA player of the year next year if he can hold on to the coattails of the human dynamo joe hansen.

  23. Re the flare incident last night. A poster on Twitter could not have it put it any better by saying the reporting has gone from a flare, to flares, and is soon going to be like Sydney Harbour Bridge at New year. Make no mistake the idiot(s) responsible are clearly going to listen to no-one or take heed of UEFA punishments towards the club.

On a wider note though how does one or maybe a few idiots equate with thousands of people indulging in sectarian and racist chanting? That is exactly what the issue is here and the Scottish media reek of desperation. We can be sure that UEFA will be contacted today by several Scottish media outlets and by tomorrow the headlines will be about a stand or entire ground closure. In my view there is not a chance of that because UEFA can see this is not an endemic problem among the wider Celtic support although I’m sure another fine of a few grand is on its way.

Celtic’s detractors should look inwardly and be careful what they desperately wish for.

  24. Alfie n you can make sense when you want to. Totally agree about the snide remarks while roc help teams go out . Back on the stage. Haven’t seen the game but sounds like it was a Hunnish plain field. Good to see so many now in tune with Ronny. Let’s enjoy the roller coaster, treble is on and that is no mean feat. Hail hail

  25. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

IMO VVD ‘s second booking was justified ….his first wasn’t even a foul

The game however was littered with very poor refereeing decisions

Guarin’s booking is a red card in any league

Otherwise , we acquitted ourselves admirably….great to see big CG back to his best , Denayer was and is a special player , Bitton produced his best display in a CFC shirt ….

Sadly the Forrest experiment didn’t work …this young lad looks lost …I hope he regains his form soon

Guidetti ..,shameful diving …I’d chase him for that behaviour …not how we do things

Scepovic ….what’s the story ? , who signed him? Is he so bad as to be left out altogether ?… Puzzling

  26. Woke up, listened to the post match interview with RD, flicking through Newsnow Celtic and click on a report on RD. Turns out it was the Daily Record report (so unfortunately gave them my click through). Their report on RD’s press conference –

    “Deila slams ropey ref”

“Deila struggled to contain his anger”

“Deila blasted, the sending off of Virgil was cheap”

RD could not have been more composed in the press conference. He gave measured answers to questions, wasn’t led into saying anything controversial, didn’t ‘slam’ anyone, at no point appeared to be ‘containing anger’ nor did he ‘blast’ anyone about the sending off.

I just cannot understand why any supporter of Celtic FC would buy this rag.
