Internazionale 1-0 Celtic

800

Inter scored a breakaway goal from Guarin, who should have earlier received a red card for deliberately striking Stefan Johansen on the face, on the 88th minute to win this tie 4-3 on aggregate.  But despite playing for the majority of the game with 10 men, after Virgil van Dijk’s 36th minute red card, Celtic looked comfortable throughout.  Man of the match Nir Bitton dictated play for long periods.

The best actual chance of the game fell to Gary Mackay-Steven on the 7th minute when a cross-field pass from Emilio Izaguirre was misjudged by the Inter defence, allowing Mackay-Steven to control and nip clean through on Carrizo but the keeper spread himself to block.

Stuart Armstrong had a strong penalty claim denied on 14 minutes.  As he prepared to shoot, Santon grabbed him by the shoulder but the referee gave the first notice that he would give the home team the benefit of the doubt all night.

Inter took time to get into the game but Icardi almost connected to a blasted cross ball by Santon as the home team made their first chance, on 19 minutes.

Two minutes later Celtic had their second penalty claim on the evening when John Guidetti was held but again the referee was in no mood to award a decision against the home team.

Ultimately the red card may have determined the outcome of this game but if anyone expected Celtic to collapse afterwards, they were mistaken.  Inter enjoyed their best spell of the game between van Dijk’s 36th minute red and halftime, but the man advantage was not evident from the flow of play.  Craig Gordon made a stunning save from a header, which was ultimately found to be offside, on 38 minutes, and two minutes before the break Gordon saved again at his near post after Jason Denayer blocked an initial shot.

Needing a goal while a man down requires a difficult tactical balance.  Celtic decided to keep things tight until later in the second period.  Gordon saved twice, from Hernanes and Guarin, before the latter retaliated when Stefan Johansen nutmeged him but hitting the Celtic player with a forearm smash.

Ronny Deila sent Kris Commons on for the final 13 minutes and, with Celtic struggling to test the keeper, the midfielder tried his luck from 35 yards but Carrizo was untroubled.

With Celtic pressing for what would have been a winner, Inter broke with speed.  A Guarin shot from 25 yards thundered into the top corner, leaving Gordon with no chance.

The Green Brigade being debated, really some of you have too much time on your hands.

One numpty let off a flare – any time someone steps out of line are we always going to blame the Green Brigade?

Some of you are worse than the MSM – you’re doing the same job but least they’re getting paid.

At 0-2 at home to Inter the place was still bouncing. That wouldnt have happened before and helped drive the team on.

Not huge on the need for an ‘ultras’ group but as long as they dont behave like Ultras in Italy or Eastern Europe then we are fine.

In my view the whole stand should be rocking with support for the team – like the fans of San Lorenzo in Argentina.

We love all the platitudes about being great supporters but are we? The Green

Brigade are, but what % of the wider support actually deserve that praise?!

Its easy to support Celtic in the Champions League, the big glamour nights – instead of aiming your venom at the Green Brigade maybe those that don’t bother their erse when we’re playing Hamilton should be the real target.

    Sometimes you wonder.

  6. John Guidetti – has a 2 in 3 goal average but also 1 in 3 assist average. He’s involvement is roughly 1 goal a game.

Compare that with Leigh Griffiths who has recently been excellent for us. He has a 1 in 3 scoring rate, a 1 in 8 assist rate giving a not quite 1 in 2 goal involvement.

I think Guidetti is definitely good enough, certainly better than anyone we own. Is he consistent enough? When he’s not scoring he still provides. I’d say yes.

  7. Not impressed by Guidetti. Griffiths has better pace, workrate and timing. JG and VVD need to wise up to play in a higher league. Denayer will be better player than VVD because he’s still learning. Get Bitton on a long contract. Trust in Deila.

whenever I see the word ‘fatso’ I am reminded of one of the best spelling mistakes I ever saw in a letter. Pre-computer days when one spoke into a Dictaphone (reminds me of another joke…) passed the tape to the typing pool and then signed the paper copy and stuck it in the post. Also from the pre-Plain English era. So, anyway, my colleague had dictated that ole Latin phrase ‘ipso facto’. Unfortunately he didn’t check the letter before signing and posting and thought nothing more of it until the complaint landed on his desk – the typed version had “If so, fatso…”!

  18. traditionalist 88,

Everyone is , of course, entitled to what they consider is the best way to support the team. For me, the finest ever Celtic supporter I have known stood in what I presume you would call the Jungle, attended every match home and away for the best part of 60 years, never so much as sang a single song or wore a scarf but lived and breathed Celtic.

A real supporter in my eyes and there are many like him. In fact, he typifies for me the Jungle (or Hayshed I as know) supporter that I grew up with until about the mid 70s when a totally different type of youngster forced the older group out.

Those men had watched Celtic through the lean and very lean years and never stopped turning up. Oh, if you’re wondering about his name: it is John Kelly. I’m sure there are many folk from the Parkhead area, certainly among the grey brigade who will know him.

  19. traditionalist88 on

I’ve been at a couple of away games in the last 2 years where a group of young lads have been acting suspiciously in the vicinity, and sure enough it looked like it was their intention to let off a flare.

Fans around them told them in no uncertain terms where to go on both occasions.

On both occasions the youngsters involved ranged from about the ages of 9 to about 15. Not a joke btw – there were a couple of young bhoys in the groups not yet in double figures!

  23. So yet another shocking referee display against Italian opposition. At what point does this become more than just bad luck or human error. If I were in charge of Celtic the next time we face an Italian team I would consider contacting a discrete middleman to hire a private investigator and get him on to the referee’s case as soon as he was appointed.

  27. John Guidetti

Awkward, decent movement. Knows when to go down (sometimes a bit theatrical).

Eye for goal. Good at set pieces. Holds the ball up well.

Hard to judge when he hasn;t had a run of starts recently. Temprament is questionable.

Do we try and keep him? If he wants anything more than £20k a week I would tend to say no.

    Last night

Guidetti has a lack of pace. Might be lack of match sharpness.

Very hard to judge at the minute to be fair but my gut feeling is no considering LG is probably on around £10k a week and gives us a lot. I would prefer us to look at other options if he wants anything over £20k a week. Just my feeling at the moment. I may change my mind on that. LG was a big loss last night. Shame we gambled not taking Scepovic.

VVD may just have ruled himself out of a decent move last night. These are the games scouts and managers will judge him on. Yellows were harsh but positionally at the 2nd yellow he was caught wrong side of the ball. Just a wee bit lack of experience there.

We had a real lack of pace up front once GMS went off and realistically we were done at the red card. Frustrating because we looked the better side over the 90 mins and performed better than last week. Thought Efe done well when he came on which was a positive. Bitton looked one of the best players on the pitch. Our coaches have done a fine job with him this season and that is important. It shows they can develop good players to be better. That is massive for us.

Bring on the sheep. Hopefully we can get a solid victory and avoid injuries.

If Guidetti starts he needs to watch how he goes down because the whistlers will believe the media which will tout he is now a diver. The Hearts penalty earlier in the season was a marker and last night every non Celtic fan I know said that Guidetti is a diver. I expect he will get very little going forward from our referee’s.

Frustrating loss last night but the damage was done in the first leg it was always going to be tough. Progress is being made though. Deila is the real deal. Smart moves in the summer and we are looking good for next season. A trble would be a nice tonic to round off a work in progress season under the new gaffer.

  28. Scotland’s former head of referees, Hugh Dallas, has been urged by Panathinaikos president Giannis Alafouzos to make a shock refereeing comeback at the age of 57 after football in Greece was suspended entirely following violence at Sunday’s derby between his team and Olympiakos, as well as a brawl between club officials at a board meeting on Tuesday.

    Greeks have lost the plot!

    LB

  29. We are out of Europe because of 2 bad mistakes from Craig Gordon and some shocking defending at Celtic park, allied with naivity from VVD to get sent off for a second yellow card after being given the first, which was incorrectly given. Add to that a stunning strike, a great missed chance by GMS last night, a great missed chance by LG last Thursday.

The ref was poor and but we are a team from one of the lesser nations always up against it from teams from UEFA’s top nations.

I’d blame the ref if we hadn’t attributed to our own downfall.

As it stands we are out because we failed to defend properly over two legs as well as not converting 2 or 3 great chances.

That said I am more than happy with our overall perfomance over the two legs and I see much improvement from what we had shown in the first half of the season.

I look forward to and believe we will win the the trebble this season.

I find the topic quite fascinating and, at times, our attitudes towards it quite dismaying.

“Sectarian” is a term apt to confuse, and indeed, the definition of it seems to change according to the circumstances. It’s become a catch all for ‘unpleasant expression of traditional rivalry’ from what I can gather.

Nil By Mouth is permitted to act to address such unpleasantness, anti-social behaviour if you like, make the world a better place according to its own sense of purpose, and certainly within the context of the vocabulary of football rivalry in Scotland, “Hun” is part of the lexicon. It’s not very nice.

“Sectarianism” though has no legal definition, and indeed, isn’t unlawful in itself. It’s permissible to give expression to difference, to protest, provided such expression is not motivated by and does not display hostility towards those human characteristics protected at law.

The problem we have in Scotland I think may be seeded in the Law overtaking social attitudes. We might recognise antagonistic and aggressive behaviour as “sectarian” in terms of the tradition of such behaviour in our own experience, but in many cases, it is not unlawful.

For example, professing to “hate Rangers” might fall within the “sectarian” context, but it is not unlawful, and giving expression to “hating Rangers” is not a Hate Crime despite it being considered squarely within the “sectarian” domain.

On the contrary, giving expression to “hating Protestants” is unlawful in the same way as giving expression to hating disabled persons, Gypsies, transsexuals or any other protected human characteristic.

Our long experience has inured many of us to seek equivalence, when in fact, we should be protecting Equality and promoting Diversity.

It’s OK to support Rangers. It’s allowed. It’s OK not to like Rangers too. It’s not nice to demean or denigrate Rangers supporters, it may even be considered ‘sectarian’ within the context of our experience, but neither is it unlawful.

It is unlawful though to show hostility towards Rangers supporters based on a presumption of their religion, thus is “Orange bastard” both sectarian and unlawful, Orange being an exclusively Protestant identity, and religion being a protected characteristic. Conversely, “anti-Catholic bastard” may not be unlawful provided there were reasonable grounds to support such a contention.

The term “Hun” sits squarely within the “sectarian” lexicon, and I would agree with Nil By Mouth on that much, but NBM is not a legal authority.

On which point, I haven’t got the court record of the Devlin case, but I was under the impression that he pled guilty, and thus the ‘offence’ wasn’t tested by the court. If it was, and has been since, then I would be minded to concede that the law deems the term “hun” to be a religious aggravation, and thus would have to revise my own attitude accordingly.

  32. Just watched the game there now… good performance and pretty much happy with our displays over 2 legs.. some day we will get the so called rub of the green away in europe.

Ref ruined it for us no doubt…vvd didnt go through the man.. he stood his ground as attacker tried a failed dummy. 2nd yellow was equally as poor.. i dont think vvd made any other fouls so persistent fouling should be ruled out.

And the inter player who was telling the r3f to give vvd his 2nd yellow.. he should have been put into the 3rd row in the 90th minute. Absolute hate that .

Felt sorry for GMS..he looked dangerous but it was a tough decision for ronnie..i probably would have picked gms aswel at the time… armstrong looks great signing but needs to get involved more.

Izzy..again poor at this level..improved in 2nd half but wee man gave it away alot in first half.

Them performances over the 2legs should make us an attractive option for many players in the dutch..belgian. Scandinavian leagues.

Including a cracker at celtic park if I remember right when at hearts.

His mistakes are not unexpected to me at least.

that said he had an outstanding second half last Thursday and last night and it is true that it’s unlikely we’d have played in Europe aftre Christmas if it had not been for some of his saves before Christmas.

Not because of a dodgy ref or anything, but because the jinx that was my late father attended.

He didn’t go much due to work, but, that match, Dixie’s penalty v Inter, LC final v Thistle. . .yep, he made those, despite pleas from family and friends!
