Internazionale 1-0 Celtic

800

Inter scored a breakaway goal from Guarin, who should have earlier received a red card for deliberately striking Stefan Johansen on the face, on the 88th minute to win this tie 4-3 on aggregate.  But despite playing for the majority of the game with 10 men, after Virgil van Dijk’s 36th minute red card, Celtic looked comfortable throughout.  Man of the match Nir Bitton dictated play for long periods.

The best actual chance of the game fell to Gary Mackay-Steven on the 7th minute when a cross-field pass from Emilio Izaguirre was misjudged by the Inter defence, allowing Mackay-Steven to control and nip clean through on Carrizo but the keeper spread himself to block.

Stuart Armstrong had a strong penalty claim denied on 14 minutes.  As he prepared to shoot, Santon grabbed him by the shoulder but the referee gave the first notice that he would give the home team the benefit of the doubt all night.

Inter took time to get into the game but Icardi almost connected to a blasted cross ball by Santon as the home team made their first chance, on 19 minutes.

Two minutes later Celtic had their second penalty claim on the evening when John Guidetti was held but again the referee was in no mood to award a decision against the home team.

Ultimately the red card may have determined the outcome of this game but if anyone expected Celtic to collapse afterwards, they were mistaken.  Inter enjoyed their best spell of the game between van Dijk’s 36th minute red and halftime, but the man advantage was not evident from the flow of play.  Craig Gordon made a stunning save from a header, which was ultimately found to be offside, on 38 minutes, and two minutes before the break Gordon saved again at his near post after Jason Denayer blocked an initial shot.

Needing a goal while a man down requires a difficult tactical balance.  Celtic decided to keep things tight until later in the second period.  Gordon saved twice, from Hernanes and Guarin, before the latter retaliated when Stefan Johansen nutmeged him but hitting the Celtic player with a forearm smash.

Ronny Deila sent Kris Commons on for the final 13 minutes and, with Celtic struggling to test the keeper, the midfielder tried his luck from 35 yards but Carrizo was untroubled.

With Celtic pressing for what would have been a winner, Inter broke with speed.  A Guarin shot from 25 yards thundered into the top corner, leaving Gordon with no chance.

Englander teams didn’t do too well tonight

  3. We are downhearted after a superhuman effort, while the multi billionaires from the EPL lose two teams tonight, and their richest club in the world, plus Arsenal are also on the way out.Perspective.

  4. When I heard before the game that the referee was Slovakian, I was going to post that the ref in Seville was Slovakian and was weak. I hoped this one wouldn’t be.

    He was.

Bottled it for penalty on Armstrong as it was a red card challenge.

First booking for Virgil was ridiculous.

Emilio booked for a similar offence which went unpunished on Guidetti in the first half.

    Weak.

I don’t think we were physically exerted tonight. So we should be ready for Sunday. Plus VVD and GMS only played 40 mins each and LG will be fresh hopefully. I don’t think Ronny likes the sheep so i think we will give them a going over.

Sorry mate,no idea what game you were watching tonight.”Not seriously exerted”!!!!!!!!!

    Guarin not sent off.

    Shaqiri not booked for diving.

Van Dijk second booking from goal kick which should have been Celtic corner.

    Two penalties not given.

3 minutes injury time from 5 second half substitutions, an injury stoppage for Bitton and time-wasting from Craig Gordon.

Apart from that the ref was pretty decent……

  12. need to change slightly for aberdeen game. see if everyone is fit. Will LG make it? When wil ML be back?

  13. Enjoyed that game. No disgrace for the Bhoys. I thought they were a poor home team. Celtic took the game to them even with 10 men.

Watched the game with paddybhoy1888’s son – fine young fella. I’m getting him out to give me golf lesson now I know he’s a decent player!

In fairness to Inter it was a goal worthy of winning any game.

We’ll be a team others want to avoid next season.. Going in the right direction!

VVD has underscored Tom English’s recent assessment on BBC Sport. He has not looked comfortable on the european stage and is still good footballer in development.

  17. Bring on the next bunch of cheating diving swines on sunday. Aberdeen the kick and rush experts who fall down if you look at them, our Bhoys will be very stiff after tonight but will be looking for them to slaughter them.

There was no way that ref was going to let us go through tonight even the near side linesman never kept up with the play, thought they were offside on a few occasions.

Still very happy with Ronny’s setup, our Bhoys are turning into men, would liked to have heard the players after the game.

GMS was having a good game, the sending off was a shame, and unfortunately he is more a winger than a midfielder, the rest, Biton, Beown, Armstrong, and Johanson, are all natural midfield players, if you know anything about the game it’s a no brainier, the un natural player has to go, it’s the numbers game, and the way it goes, the balance of the team was good at the start, but when VVD went, we needed a centre half and thas that, so you have a natural back four, and keep your shape in midfield, and one up front, and try your best, everyone did and it didn’t come off, BUT, it wasent for the sake of trying, well done to every player who wore the hoops tonight, to a man I was proud of them.

    ……………………….

Touche. Guidetti wasn’t contributing much though. I would have been tempted to sub him and leave GMS on as a striker.

  24. As long as we replace VVD with a player who strolls the SPFL and is better than VVD in the CL I’ll be happy.

Baffled by RD ‘s decisions tonight. He took off our biggest threat, GMS and then went on to replace Guidetti with Forrest a poor man’s version of GMS. Ronnie’s come a long way but that was not his best night.

And what’s gone wrong with Forrest, his pace was his biggest weapon but he didn’t have the legs tonight.

    Treble please Ronnie.

  27. Interesting that of all our players VVD is probably the one whose reputation has taken the biggest beating over the 2 matches.

The Italian media were scathing about him after first game (though I though he was OK).

And whilst unlucky to be sent off tonight, I suspect the big-league scouts will mark him down as not cynical or clever enough at the moment.

I don’t think we should blame JF for tonight – obviously we shouldn’t.

But he does seem to be the one Celtic player who does not fit into Ronny’s style of play – relentless, energetic, crisp, pressing…

Don’t think he will last at CP sadly…

Dont think anyone is blaming Forrest except for his lack of effort.Wandered about like a lost boy.FFS,how hard is it to put yourself about for 30 minutes.Johansen was running by him to put pressure on.Looked like a struggle for him to run.Sad,because he has undoubted talent in my eyes.

  30. I can’t believe the calls for VVD to be sold at market, it’ took us quite some time to find a centre half. I hope and pray we can hold on to him the boy will only get better, like Bitton a class act..

I heard Bonner on the car radio this morning saying he was sure Celtic would get a result but maybe not a win.

What the 8888 did that mean.

    Any idea?

  32. ItaliaBhoy: “I don’t think we should blame JF for tonight – obviously we shouldn’t.”

I wouldn’t blame JF for the result tonight. He was only on the pitch for 30 minutes and made up just 10% of our team. And I don’t think he made any significant contribution either way to their goal.

If we are going to try to blame people for the result, we could blame GMS for not chipping the ‘keeper early on (as the KoK would have done), the referee for countless honest mistakes, VVD for his reckless challenge when already carrying a (wrongly awarded) yellow card, JG for getting in Broonie’s way when he attempted to run through on goal, and several Bhoys for not closing down Guarin or the player who passed to him at their goal.

I cannot in any way justify putting any blame whatsoever on JF for the result. But I can criticise his lack of effort, particularly when not one other Celtic player ran less than he.

Overall the team put up a gallant fight, with 10 v 12 for around an hour of the game. In the circumstances it was never going to be our night. But we van stand tall and proud that our team showed fans across Europe that we are no longer a pushover. Whoever draws us in the CL qualifiers (assumption!) next season will not be overly confident of winning the challenge ahead of them!
