Internazionale 1-0 Celtic

800

Inter scored a breakaway goal from Guarin, who should have earlier received a red card for deliberately striking Stefan Johansen on the face, on the 88th minute to win this tie 4-3 on aggregate.  But despite playing for the majority of the game with 10 men, after Virgil van Dijk’s 36th minute red card, Celtic looked comfortable throughout.  Man of the match Nir Bitton dictated play for long periods.

The best actual chance of the game fell to Gary Mackay-Steven on the 7th minute when a cross-field pass from Emilio Izaguirre was misjudged by the Inter defence, allowing Mackay-Steven to control and nip clean through on Carrizo but the keeper spread himself to block.

Stuart Armstrong had a strong penalty claim denied on 14 minutes.  As he prepared to shoot, Santon grabbed him by the shoulder but the referee gave the first notice that he would give the home team the benefit of the doubt all night.

Inter took time to get into the game but Icardi almost connected to a blasted cross ball by Santon as the home team made their first chance, on 19 minutes.

Two minutes later Celtic had their second penalty claim on the evening when John Guidetti was held but again the referee was in no mood to award a decision against the home team.

Ultimately the red card may have determined the outcome of this game but if anyone expected Celtic to collapse afterwards, they were mistaken.  Inter enjoyed their best spell of the game between van Dijk’s 36th minute red and halftime, but the man advantage was not evident from the flow of play.  Craig Gordon made a stunning save from a header, which was ultimately found to be offside, on 38 minutes, and two minutes before the break Gordon saved again at his near post after Jason Denayer blocked an initial shot.

Needing a goal while a man down requires a difficult tactical balance.  Celtic decided to keep things tight until later in the second period.  Gordon saved twice, from Hernanes and Guarin, before the latter retaliated when Stefan Johansen nutmeged him but hitting the Celtic player with a forearm smash.

Ronny Deila sent Kris Commons on for the final 13 minutes and, with Celtic struggling to test the keeper, the midfielder tried his luck from 35 yards but Carrizo was untroubled.

With Celtic pressing for what would have been a winner, Inter broke with speed.  A Guarin shot from 25 yards thundered into the top corner, leaving Gordon with no chance.

Last word on this Bhoys because I’d rather be talking about a Celtic performance to be proud of.

As I’ve said I’m not a fan of the smokes or flares but my original point was that I’ll wait and see if the picture was genuinely from tonight game.

I now know that two were set off in Milan.

    Absolutely stupid.

Can’t be bothered blaming the ref or the media.

Ronny, Biton and Johansen deserve an apology from those individuals who lambasted them.

PL must give funds to Ronny, alas I agree with Sydney tim. Lord help me.

There will be flares set off all over EL games today , the only difference is that their national channel will not be approaching UEFA!

    You’re missing the point.

We all know the GB are mostly weans who couldn’t fight sleep.

But they’re costing the club money and damaging its reputation.

    For what?

Seriously. One pathetic little pyro. What’s the point?

  5. Tonight was progress.

Even with 10 men we took the game to them. It took a wonder goal to settle it. Until that went in I was hopeful we could sneak it.

    No complaints….

Great effort from Celtic tonight and further proof Ronny Deila is up to the task.

I haven’t read back, but I’m sure some players are getting the scapegoat treatment – just the way it is for certain people.

But if anyone is having a go at our players tonight, try and remember none of them were even close to the referee in terms of a poor performance.

Hopefully we can win the treble now.

  9. It is hard to lay the blame for our exit on any hoop player tonight.

Ronnie also had to make a quick decision on who to bring off and decided that GMS coming off would not weaken the midfield too much, so a hard call for him, and despite Gary being our most effective attacker, I can see why RD hooked him.

We were all asking before the Inter ties, if we had really improved, and bhoy has that been answered emphatically.

I say to every Celtic supporter, if you are not enjoying watching this team, then you never will and should give it up.

I also believe that there is a lot more to come, and can’ t wait to get along to games now.

It has been a while since I felt that.

    It’s a problem, no doubt.

Just a wee thing I ain’t levelling my ire at the GB.

Agree with the passion they bring to the club.

I’ve been dismayed by their treatment, which has dragged the group down and ultimately seen them targeted.

I remember not to long ago, looking round the stadium at all the kids dancing to the GB’s repertoire. They were a draw and part of the experience.

I don’t think anyone could accuse the GB of lacking humour or passion.

    Just my opinion :-)

  14. Those questioning the substitution.. It was clearly a coaching team decision. I saw them all in puting to decision. No disrespect to CQN posters but I’d go with JK, JC and Rd judgement

    Genuine question.

Are the GB and the Celtic Ultras two seperate groups?

Whether they are or not, Celtic sold them tickets, therefore they must be registered with the club.

In my long ago schooldays, if an individual culprit could not be identified, the whole class got punished.

The result was that the offender suffered the wrath of his peers and did not sin again.

With the team on the park creating the excitement and interest, there is no longer any need for manufactured “atmosphere”.

  21. JFH @ 20:24 (on previous thread)

Love your posts, always, but on occasion on the football I find something I strongly disagree with.

“My opinion on VVD he got himself on the wrong side of the Inter player I think he might have thought he could nick the ball but that is fine in the SPL but at European level it was naive and then he proceeded to sprawl all over the player leaving the inter player waving an imaginary card at the ref.who was happy to oblige. He will grow out of this in years to come with experience but tonight he cost us dearly. H.H.”

Chris Sutton went on about this idea at length, and so did BBJ at one point. It was bizzarre for CS to say this when he’d already pointed out himself, that our fullbacks go forward leaving the central defence exposed. It’s a concessionary tactic, and it works when we’re scoring goals under fair refereeing.

We still managed to minimise their chances, bearing in mind that regardless of what has been said, this was a very very good attacking team. VVD and JD were always defending from both sides of themselves. VVD was the best player on the pitch until he was sent off, controlling the defence against a very clever and snappy attack-line, as well as going for the high balls, attacking in the corners. If I was a referee who had received a sub of £10,000 and the guarantee of another similar game, would I have conspired to send him off? No, because I believe strongly in fairness. Make of that what you will. Effe stepped in very well though into the middle, which is worth pointing out, as he can be another whipping bhoy. It was well organised, he was told not to clear the ball, but get it to Bitton or Broonie. Well organised.

Craig Gordon made at least two outstanding saves tonight, but they came from no where, as did Inter’s excellent goal.

There’s little we can fault in the way we played last week or tonight, against very very good Italian competiton, who didn’t feel the need to play the referee for decisions.

Usual shit, money-biased refereeing, but we were outstanding against a very very good football team, who I’d like to see win the Cup over any of the other pish. One thing I hate more than the huns, is a dirty cheating Juventus-esque team. Inter aren’t that at all.

  22. thomthethim for Oscar OK

Correct…..the whole class got punished when I dogged school….they missed my witty repartee .

  23. Sue the flare holders the amount of the fine. I like the flares but eufa don’t and they are the on,es that count. Really stupid to set it off

You would last 2 minutes in my local in Clydebank, before being fed to the fish in Loch Humphrey. North West of Clydebank. Hun Troll come on down here.

  25. Could at least one of you who are blaming the GB for setting off flares tonight provide a little bit of proof at least.

And if you can’t then why are you saying it.

Maybe the GB were all in Rotterdam

One of the problems with away euro games is that seat allocated numbers mean nought. You can wander to any seat you like, even remember at Barca the steward saying pick your seat. As for Udenise (spelling) pick any two thousand seat you like …..

  27. After the first leg that clown Mcmanaman stated ‘none of these poor 2 teams will be good enough in the next round to beat the teams left in the Europa league, the English teams etc. That’ll be team (Everton) in the singular then ya fud.

Also, after the CL round of 16 finishes there are likely to be 2 EPL teams (Chelsea and Everton) at best left of the 24 teams remaining in both competitions. Meanwhile of the 6 Italian teams who qualified fom that weak Italian league all the experts were keen to point out to us before our games, all 6 remain standing. Nuff said :-)
