Internecine strife, Regan, Ogilvie, Fifa and King

348

How many times have we warned against internecine strife over the years?  No one from outside a football club can really lay a glove on it, any real damage can only be done from the inside.  Yesterday was Internecine Strife Day for one of the world’s biggest West of Scotland clubs.

Following on from Stewart Regan’s assertion to the media on Wednesday that an unnamed member of Rangers senior management did not properly disclose the damaging Employee Benefit Trust arrangements to the company’s directors, one of those directors, Dave King, has lodged a £20m claim against the club to compensate for the £20m he invested in shares in 2000.

There are so many acts in play at the moment it is difficult to know exactly what outcome King is hoping for here.  The company is broke and at most will pay pennies in the pound to creditors, but Mr Regan’s assertion that some managers did not discharge their duties correctly opens up wide-ranging ramifications for those he referred to.

Regan excluded SFA president and former Rangers director, Campbell Ogilvie, from his allegations but it is unclear where his information came from.  Concern is that it may have been directly from Ogilvie and that Regan spoke without an independent investigation being conducted.  We hope that the SFA chief executive would not be so foolish as to attempt a cover-up of these matters.

Good corporate governance practices not only reassure the public, they protect chief executives from embarrassing resignations.

His silence on who conducted the inquiry that cleared Ogilvie and established that someone “higher up the chain” hid facts from Ogilvie, and perhaps King, is alarming.  The SFA is not an old boys club, we need to know, did they properly investigate Ogilvie’s role or is something more sinister underway?

Who at the SFA knows about the inquiry which cleared Ogilvie?  My previously-reliable sources at the Association were not aware the matter was investigated.  It would also be good to know if the SFA board received the report that allowed Mr Regan to clear Mr Ogilvie.  After all, the SFA are acutely aware of the dangers when important matters are kept “higher up the chain” from board members.  What a sorry mess that would be.

I could cynically guess at these answers but after hearing Stewart Regan, it’s perhaps better to establish the facts first.

Let’s hope someone asks Mr Regan and he is able to clear the matter up.  Better still, let’s hope someone keeps Fifa up to date with these developments and the ones we covered yesterday – don’t leave it to someone else, make sure they hear from you.

The Herald today listed charges including tax evasion, fraud, racketeering and money laundering against Dave King, but explains why he is crying foul play against the current, previous and potential future owner of Rangers.

In fairness to King, he has seen many obvious pitfalls in the Green proposition, perhaps a bit more internecine strife at the right times would have been better than blissful ignorance.

    Things that are certain…..

No player who has to have a transfer fee paid for him, will leave before the CVA vote.

Souness will not voluntarily explain why he was paid via an EBT and at many times the £30,000 the BBC reported *

Murray will never voluntarily explain why he put significant funds into the EBT for Souness and others not named , SO FAR, as beneficiaries *

Michael Johnston will never vote NO to Newco

    * applies where an explanation may one day not be voluntary , as Judges in Courts don’t accept “I’m no telling you” as a credible defence

Things that should be certain , but are unknown at this stage …….

    The CVA will be rejected

Newco will not be accepted into the SPL

Traynor and Young will be removed from he BBC for breaking the BBC’s charter commitment to impartiality

Campbell Ogilvie will resign before a motion of no confidence in him is passed

The FTT will reject Rangers appeal

The SPL will find Rangers guilty of deliberately illegally registering players since 2000, and will strip them of all titles won in this period

The SFA will determine Murray to be even more unfit than Whyte and ban him for life

Things that are uncertain, and unknown

Uefa will ban Rangers in whatever form for 3 years, regardless of Newco or Oldco

The SPL have instructed the fixture composition business to prepare 3 possible League fixture lists. With Rangers or Dunfermline or Dundee featuring in an option each

The FTT will report before the CVA vote

Rangers may not play anywhere at all next season

  3. What a peculiar irony that the mess they are in and the fact that they made it themselves (SDM singularly and collectively , well analysed by SOAL etc.) feeds perfectlyinto their sense of identity – they will die but it’ll convince them they were right all along.

Surely thet can’t simply put the money into a separate holding account.

If you or I owed the taxman money and then won the lottery we couldn’t claim that the money was set aside for a new car, house or a holiday and expect to be allowed to keep it.

  5. It’s +26 C now in Warsaw and very duffy. UEFA decided all games in Poland under covered roofs. Bad decision I think.

Ah, Vuvuzelas are prohibited. Nobody can take them inside the stadiums in Poland.

  6. Does anybody think those accounts will be signed off for next Friday, or will we see another deadline extension?

Split household tonight, wife (English) supporting Poland, me (Celt) supporting Greece (sorry Mr Z).

I am driven by the Sammi connection, the wife is driven by the total dislike of a Greek colleague ( I can’t stand the woman either).

I’m going for Russia in the second game, the wife is undecided as neither Russia or the Czech Republic have any Greeks playing for them ;-)

ToneLoc was a popular war dialing computer program for MS-DOS written in the early to mid-1990s by two programmers known by the pseudonyms Minor Threat (Chris Lamprecht) and Mucho Maas. The name ToneLoc was short for “Tone Locator” and was a word play on the name of the rap artist known as Tone Lōc. The utility was created for the purpose of scanning for dial tones or modem carriers in order to find PBXes, long distance carriers, or other modems.

On April 17, 2005, the source code for ToneLoc was released

Remember the sale of Craig Whyte’s shares to Charles Green is conditional upon the CVA being accepted by the creditors – a fairly safe bet that these shares will not transfer from Craig Whyte.

  15. bye bye rangers…

DUNDEE United chairman Stephen Thompson doubts whether Scottish Premier League clubs would at present vote a Rangers ‘newco’ into the league.

    • Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson casts doubt on whether SPL clubs would allow ‘newco’ Rangers back into SPL

    • Thompson says that legal action by Rangers has “hardened” views against club

    • Prospective Rangers owner Charles Green will use CVA route as first option, but will resort to ‘newco’ if necessary

Charles Green’s consortium are hoping to take the Ibrox club out of administration through a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) next Thursday but if that is unsuccessful the former Sheffield United chief executive would attempt to transfer the club’s assets to a newco, including Rangers’ share in the SPL.

The other 11 SPL clubs would decide whether the newco could replace the existing Rangers in the league.

Amid their bid for survival, Rangers have been fighting footballing sanctions handed out by the Scottish Football Association and successfully overturned a 12-month transfer embargo at the Court of Session, with the issue returning to the SFA’s appeal process.

Thompson believes that move has not helped the Govan club’s bid to ultimately remain in the SPL.

“I’d have my doubts whether they’d get sufficient votes to get back in,” he told BBC Scotland.

“It wouldn’t be just a simple yes or no vote, they’d have to negotiate their way back in again. That might not be easy for them.

“There’s been a lack of remorse shown. Views have hardened.

“Taking things to a court of law hasn’t helped. That’s certainly hardened views of people within the game.

“Next week the CVA will be decided. Next week will be the turning point and we’ll see where it goes from there.”

Thompson has received “emails and letters in the hundreds” from fans opposed to a Rangers newco being admitted to the SPL and he suspects the issue is already having an effect on season ticket sales.

“One or two are holding back, I’ve no doubt about that and that affects what I’m capable of doing with regard to bringing players in,” said Thompson who revealed he is in talks with manager Peter Houston’s agent about a new deal.

“It’s not just people who are 15, 16-years-old on message boards, I’m talking about people writing in who have been season ticket holders for 30 or 40 years with very, very strong feelings.

“It’s damaging for the game. Most fans of other clubs outside Rangers are fed up with the whole scenario.

“All we really want is clarity so that we can all move on.”

Houston has won the Scottish Cup and led United into Europe three seasons in a row since taking over during season 2009/10 and Thompson is hopeful of retaining his manager and adding to the current squad.

“We’re talking to him [Houston] and his agent about a possible new contract,” added Thompson.

“We’re not necessarily in any rush to do it. We’re getting on well. We’re very, very open about things.

“I’m very pleased with the way things are, there’s a bit of stability about the club. Peter’s now been at the club either as assistant manager or manager, for nearly six years.

“Stability to me is a big thing. You can develop players that way, you can put in place ideas that you actually can see through.

“I’m hoping that we can come to an agreement but time will tell.”

  16. Excellent article AGAIN Paul,

I was trying to take a break from all things CQN!! but having checked back in, I see the world of tax dodgers FC gets murkier and murkier by the day.

I doubt we will EVER get to know the FULL extent of their cheating but as long as enough is exposed to see them punished accordingly, then I will settle for that.

Just have to keep hoping the ‘authorities’ allow them to be punished ‘accordingly’, although there is only so much any organisation can ‘sweep under the carpet’!!! as the carpet couldn’t be THAT big!!!!!

Good luck to Cha Du Ri, who I see has moved to german football today, never gonna be near to a Celtic legend but gave the impression of always trying his best (although that best, might not have been very good) and he took us to heart, so that counts for something.

  23. The farce goes on and on . I cant understand europe,s football governing body not getting involved in the matters of rangers f.c . But i,ll tell you what , the orcs are becoming a side show here compared to the real scandal that is the SFA . The people who constitute the office bearers in this association have in effect ( as far as im concerned ) killed the game of football in this country , never again will it be viewed as a legitimate sport . The names of regan, doncaster , and ogilvie ., will be forever mentioned as the men who made a laughing stock of scottish football . Someone on here posted a wee while back that since the untimely death of paul mcbride , the swing in favour of the orcs getting off scot free has increased , as has the lengths some will go to making sure that this is the case , we have also seen fewer revelations from phil . the rtc and alex thompson ( where has he gone ) even our resident clever ghuys auldheed , and TBB have not imparted their wisdom on the affairs over govan way as often as before , maybe they have all realised that we are flogging a dead horse expecting justice to be done in this country .
