Inverness panic instead of asking for support

447

There has been an enormous amount of guff said and written during the last five months but last night’s statement by Inverness Caledonian Thistle chairman, Kenny Cameron, is surely is up there with the most bizarre.

“All clubs will now have to live with the repercussions of this decision. Scottish football was at a cross roads today in terms of what was on the table for all clubs regarding reorganisation, financial distribution and a road map that would have taken the game forward.

“But this has now been thrown in to disarray by this decision. This is a sad day for all clubs in Scotland.

“Certain clubs in the SFL have perceived the financial information they were receiving as a ‘big stick’ to beat them into accepting Newco in the First Division. This was definitely not the case, as far as I am concerned. What they were being told was the reality of the situation.

“We will be convening an emergency board meeting over the weekend to discuss the very serious financial implications for us as a club going forward.”

Instead of explaining to the people of Inverness that buying season tickets will prevent the club making non-football staff redundant he seems to be preparing the ground for significant cutbacks.

This is the reality for every club in the SPL and several in the SFL.  Fans, including Inverness fans, demanded that a sporting element was retained in their game.  Now they’ve gotten their way, Inverness and the rest should be putting out the clarion call for fans to buy tickets.

As football fans, this is our responsibility.  35 out of 42 clubs voted to reject Sevco into anything other than the bottom level of Scottish football.  Now we must step forward.

P.S. You don’t really need me to tell you, but buy a season ticket now!

Still a bit to go but, assuming Sevco do gain a licence and do manage to field a team in a league other than the SPL this coming season, it will be interesting to see the MI for sectarian assaults and compare to previous years – if the data exists?

  4. is it not a little disrespectful to be talking about walking away with the league before a ball has been kicked. lets see what happens over the coming season, lets not forget that rfc newco will play in the slp in a few years, anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves so you’ll get your competition soon enough.

changes to the league structure will improve the overall health of the league and for me one of the real problems with scottish football has been the old firm’s domination of income and league structure designed to underline the old firm monopoly i.e. 8 games against glasgows big 2 per season kills any potential competition and is one of the reason our game is in decline and all for 2.5 million of t.v money.

there are lots of problems in scottish football and a lot of the answers to these problems but it will take bottle and balls to take the actions needed. enjoy the next year hopefully we will see a radical overhaul of football in this country and people will desire to return to football every week, that is more than we have right now

You should take huge credit for your substantial role in achieving the current position.

There are many posters on here correctly pointing out that Sevco/Rangers/New Hun are exremely fortunate to find themselves potentially in SFL3 and dodging several other issues. While I agree, I think in terms of being realistic this is beyond my wildest dreams on February 14th.

I will be satisfied if trophies are stripped and CO, SR and ND find themselves without a job.

Assuming no more shenanigans on Monday (surely not) I will renew my season ticket after an 8 year hiatus.

I would also like to adopt a local (I live in ML8) SFL3 club who voted correctly. Any suggestions as to my best option. Any like minded individuals interested in going along to see some Saturday 3pm football, including having a giggle at Sevco?

Surely there isn’t any possible way the SPL teams could vote ‘again’ to allow Sevcohun FC into the SPL –is there?

    —————————-

The SPL voted not to allow the SPL share of Rangers FC PLC (in administration) to be transferred to Sevco. So, logically, it must still be in the possession of Rangers.

Now that former club is not in any sense entitled to hold a share. So SPL Article 14 (ii) should apply, and a general meeting should be called to decide who to pass that share to. And this requires 21 days notice to be given to clubs.

It is therefore possible that there is not now time to bring in a Club 12.

We should if bringing back the thunder is the idea be looking to fill the stadium and get fans into the habit of going to matches. Atmosphere is everything and as we live in times of austeriry fans may have to pay more money for CL or EL tickets.

What are the odds of drawing Rangers in one of the cups next season – i suspect it will happen.

I can’t see how Rangers can survive next season what with maintenance costs on that big half empty stadium. They badly need to draw Celtic in both cups!

  11. Call for heads of SFA, SPL to resign

    Neil White

Roger Mitchell, the former chief executive of the Scottish Premier League, last night called on Neil Doncaster and Stewart Regan to resign in the wake of their failed attempt to gain sufficient support for Rangers newco starting out in either the SPL or the first division.

“The body of clubs over the last two or three weeks have made very difficult and courageous decisions. I salute them,” Mitchell said. “They now need to make one more: they must recognise that Scottish football can only support a limited number of full-time clubs and together agree to find a formula, without self-interest.

“The Swiss FA did just that. It’s a case study that can be learnt from. They also have an excellent youth programme.

“The people at the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Premier League who said this was not viable must do the honourable thing and resign. Their members do not believe them.”

Surely the prospect of voting Sevco into the SPL would be a suicide pact – utter madness to even contemplate it.

There needs to be a serious re-appraisal on broadcasting rights.

Someone mentioned Scandinavia and other smaller European countries having better TV deals a few days ago. The big difference in my opinion is that each of these countries has autonomous national broadcasters and a clear cultural identity and well demarcated customer base.

Norway and Sweden are big football rivals – but if you are sitting having your very expensive “tea” in front of Norwegian telly, you aren’t watching a daily diatribe of how Sweden are getting on at the Euros – basically, they are just a.n.other team.

The BBC, ITV and subsequently SKY treat Scotland very badly in this respect – as just another local region within the network. It fosters petty irritations fueled by constant news on “Ingerlund” – but more importantly encourages this subservient attitude that anything local isn’t newsworthy, must be crap and that the EPL is the only thing really worth watching. Sadly, most people buy into all that like zombies.

Personally, I reckon that it would help Scotland greatly if there was genuine national broadcaster(s), regardless of whether independence occurs or not.

In the shorter term, would it make sense if SKY were encouraged to split the Sport subscription to actually allow people to buy Scottish content independent from EPL matches – or are we all really saying that the only thing that really matters to most punters is watching Balotelli and Rooney?

Personally, I wish that people didn’t subscribe to SKY at all and that we could find a realistic alternative. Surely this is the key issue to be resolved over the next 12 months?

  16. Another battle won, lets not take the eye of the ball and move on.

Henry McLeish on Off the Ball calling for “an end to the negativity surrounding Scottish football”. Apparently “no-one is blameless” in this situation, and he called for league reconstruction. For the good of Scottish football of course.

The subtext for me is a plea to draw a line under the situation – with the exception of league reconstruction to help the new club – no further investigations for dual contracts.

If you still want to see oldco stripped of the titles gained by cheating, this line cannot be drawn without conditions.

I sense this will be the new tactic, “that’s it all dealt with now forget about it”.

Why did ICT vote No to let newco into SPL then come away with this statement last night??

Has the SFL clubs called the SPL bluff with the No vote yesterday and saying they are for change, but only if all 42 clubs take part in the ‘change’……knocking SPL2 on the head then and there yesterday?

  23. The minute BDO pull the plug on the asset transfer to CG, Sevco Scotland Ltd will become the shortest lived club in Scottish football history.

RFC (corpus delicti) will actually survive longer than Sevco Scotland Ltd, just.

  24. When Livi were demoted to Div3 they had to provide a business plan plus £750K in an escrow account in order to prove they could complete their fixtures.

The SFA license should be unattainable for Sevco but given Regan’s behaviour , I suspect that

it will simply be nodded through. An accommodation, inspired by Regan, will allow the sins of the previous regime in relation to dual contracts NOT to be passed to Sevco.

When the FTT reports, the scandal of the Dignity behaviour will be laid bare and Regan’s deal with CO prompting / architecting these plans will be chased out of office.

They should have their license application rejected , primarily due to lack of sensible business plan and pending sanctions, however the SFA will acquiesce.

30-40% chance they will not be playing this year.

  28. Jelly And Gelato on

Haven’t posted for a long time, but need to get this off my chest just to clarify the latest state of affairs for my own understanding. If anyone believes any of the following rant is factually incorrect please shout.

What has changed after yesterday’s SFL vote? The game in Scotland is still in the sorry state it was in before Friday, or before February. Rangers might be dead, and Sevco might be out of the top flight but the game is still under threat from, of all people, those charged as guardians of the game.

What really happened since it became evident that Rangers would be liquidated?

The business cartel that is the SPL have pre-existing rules in place to deal with clubs going into liquidation. Neil Doncaster, proposed a change to those rules to purely ensure Sevco Rangers would play in the SPL in place of Rangers. The proposal would relax constraints to allow a liquidated club to transfer its share to a newly created company with no history of any sort: financial or sporting. The proposal also stipulated his own arbitrary vote ratio required to pass the proposal which I still find incredulous.

Thankfully, the fans put enough pressure on clubs and the rule change proposal was overwhelmingly opposed.

Having failed that attempt, the SPL then got together with the SFL and the SFA to propose two options change the existing rules of SFL membership (or just ignore – I’m still not sure which) The two proposals would allow Sevco- a company with no financial or sporting history, no SFA license, no evidence of ownership, of funding, of even a full playing squad. Yet the SFL clubs were asked to disregard all these unknowns and vote on the two proposals to allow this entity membership of the SFL:

    1) To change the rules of membership grotesquely to allow Sevco to start in Division 1

    2) To change the rules of membership significantly to allow Sevco to start at the bottom in Division 3

The clubs voted no to the first one but yes to the second.

The vote was perceived by the media as an ‘either/or’ scenario. It wasn’t it. The third option was, ‘Leave the rules as they stand.’

The governing bodies have tried to drive through rule changes to ensure Sevco as Newco Rangers were playing somewhere by proposing rule changes and issuing bribes, false promises, threatening, emotive and disingenuous communications to those who reluctantly had the decision-making responsibility thrust onto them by the same spineless governing bodies not prepared to be seen to be making a decision detrimental to the continuing existence of the most toxic brand in UK sport.

This morning those same governing bodies are still intact, with all the same officials that were in office on February 14th 2012, still in place. When Campbell Ogilvie refused to step down when Rangers were finally found to have a case to answer over EBTs, I thought it was down to pure establishment arrogance. It’s pretty obvious leading up to yesterday exactly how he was and still is filling his working day.

This was the opportunity for catharsis, to flush out the obsolete anachronistic attitudes and practices that have been laid bare so starkly in this episode, and to start to build up the game again on solid sporting foundations. The opportunity to change the game was seen by the fans, and the clubs. But for all the wrong reasons this was suppressed by the very people we entrust the game to: The executive bodies of the SPL, The SFA and the SFL.

So sadly, Scottish Football is not in a better state today.

  29. P67 @ 12:16

I have renewed at a cost of £1500 for the forthcoming season and if the product is right and I see that I am getting value for money I will no doubt renew again. However in these financially prudent times clubs are being totally irresponsible in playing the emotional card in trying to promote and sell their product to the supporter who may have fallen on harder times due to the economic recession.

Now imagine you are a well off Celtic pensioner who has supported the club and has had a season ticket for years and you now have a concession ticket

Now let your imagination wander a little bit further and you have a a family commitment and you are unable to attend an end of season meaningless game and you loan out your concession season ticket to a friend of your sonwho is 20 years younger and doesn’t get too many games. On entering the stadium the friends sons is challenged as to his possession of the concession season ticket, due to him being obviously 45 not 65,and it is seized by your friendly steward.

What he is really worried about though is new entrant Ross County usurping their Highland rivals. His comments are despicable though, as if the visit of four thousand fans of a former club are more important than the year round support of Caley’s own supporters. Cameron has let his club down.
