Invincible Sunday

338

You will be told by some that an invincible season holds less than it would have before Rangers liquidation in 2012, but that assertion overlooks the clear facts. Martin O’Neill’s then-record points hauling treble winners lost to Kilmarnock. The Lions lost to Dundee United, twice. We always lost games to someone other than Rangers. If invincibility was achieved by stopping only one opponent there would be nothing special to report from yesterday.

This is an astonishing achievement. Invincibility over an entire season is unlikely, no matter what your comparative strengths in relation to the rest of your league are, for mathematical reasons.

Football teams convert a small percentage of their attempts at goal. There will be occasions when a team scored three from three chances, but there will also be times when a team has 20 attempts and fails to score.

Over the course of a season, the random distribution of chances converted is likely to match one of Celtic’s highly unproductive striking days, with an opponent who happen to score with perhaps their only attempt at goal. This phenomenon explains most results when poor teams beat significantly better rivals.

Strong teams are also commonly drop points away from home to top half of the table opposition. Here, Celtic have been truly imperious. We won twice away to each team in the top half of the table, scoring 6 at Aberdeen, 7 at Newco, 9 at St Johnstone, 7 at Hearts and 9 at Patrick.

It would also be lax not to mention the style of football. This is not a brutal domination of the ball and physical area of the pitch, Celtic play a stylish, flowing, game, which entertains and succeeds in equal measure.

One more bridge to cross before the job is complete.

Thanks for all the encouragement, and especially the donations to Celtic FC Foundation, for the Stirling Marathon yesterday. Before going to bed on Saturday night I read through all the donations and couldn’t wait to get started.

It was an unforgettable experience. We’ll wait and see if it’s also unrepeatable.

Our good pals at Intelligent Car Leasing have offered two (£100 each) tickets for the Lisbon Lions night at The Hydro, on Thursday. You can win them by raffle in aid of Mary’s Meals.

The raffle is open less than 12 hours, closes at midnight tonight, so mathematics also suggests your chances are none too shabby. To enter, make a minimum of £5 here, then email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the word “Hydro” in the subject line to confirm your entry.

Good luck!

p.s. How did Dundee Utd beat us twice in 66/67?

*In the 1st game on Hogmanay we were twice in the lead, a wee Duntocher bhoy scored their 2nd equaliser. This was a very good arabs side who were due tae play Juve in the old Fair Cities Cup. Not only was it our 1st defeat of the season but also the first in 9 months.

In the second one, we were again twice in the lead but had a struggling and tired side out that night, nae Stevie or Ten Thirty and it was just days after winning the cup at hunden, again the wee Duntocher lhad scored the 2nd equaliser, I believe that Hainey who scored the 1st arab goal was also a wee Celtic mhan.

My da always maintained we were too busy celebrating beating the sheep and were still recovering, Nae big deal though as 3 days later we had the Jinky show in monsoon conditions over in Govan.

BTW that same night Inter beat CSKA Sofia in a play-off tae reach the big cup final, bet they wish the hudnae 22 days later.

As far as I can recall nae honest mistakes in both games, just a bogey side for us that season.

  3. We have the song book debate 3 or 4 times a year here, different views are expressed , after a few days we all get bored with it and it’s shelved till next time.

The problem yesterday was not the “song Book” debate, it was the TIMING of it.

We had just won the League without losing a game, something we had never done before and in all probability will never do again. It was a time for unbridled celebration but one or two guys had to have a moan.

Anyway I’m still soaking up the You Tube & Facebook videos & can'[t get the smile off my face.

Like to add my appreciation for RayMacs post, brilliant stuff, well done.

“A London based investment firm has taken their stake in Celtic up to 15.04%.

Westminster based Lindsell Train have been purchasing shares in the club since 2011 and have helped raise the market capitalisation of the club to £128m”

Hadn’t heard of the guy / company before so looked into when he invested back in 2011

‘The stock market value of Celtic is about £35 million. If you look at any football club that has changed hands over the last two years, all have changed hands at a value way more than £30 million,’ Train explained. ‘We think that one day, given the history, the passionate support, Celtic will be worth more than £30 million to £40 million.’

    http://citywire.co.uk/wealth-manager/news/why-has-nick-train-bought-a-6-stake-in-celtic-football-club/a537767

Not saying it is good or bad, I don’t think you would want an investment fund owning too much of the club, but the difference in value in less than 6 years is eye watering

My niece`s husband ( who sits beside me at the games) felt that most Celtic fans would prefer the Treble to the undefeated in the League achievement. I felt the opposite. What do CQNers feel?

    Treble beyond all doubt.

    All unbeaten records go sometime.

When you have won a trophy no one can take it from you.

And if you play in Scotland, even when you cheat, you get to keep your ill gotten gains.

Hope your good lady had a great day yesterday, like you, the aftermatch stuff is a must watch, from Brendan to our Leigh, Kolo to Lustig, still wondering how Kris Commons wasn’t greeting, his bottom lip trembled a few times……

Young KT orchestrating the GB was brilliant, you just know, if he wasn’t playing he would be in there with them ……. Roll on Saturday, a special, special season

I might phone SSB tonight to ask where the pundits think Lincoln Red Imps would be in the top 6 or the bottom 6 in the SPL, for me, they wouldn’t get relegated :-)

I haven’t seen the Scotland squad, but there seems to be an air of bewilderment/disappointment that Calum is not in it.

Personally, I would prefer if none of our players were selected.

The upcoming Internationals stretch the season a further two weeks.

That’s two weeks that our players should be resting for the imminent qualifiers.

Club managers are always saying that they are happy for their players to get caps, but I imagine that Brendan would be quite happy to have all his squad on the beach.

Perhaps Gordon is doing him a favour re Calum.

  9. 7-3 to the Trebs .

I have to say I am surprised. The Treble has been achieved TEN times ( hopefully eleven very soon). A 38 game season undefeated has been achieved ONCE. Hmmmm…..

Arsenal in talks over Nigerian striker we were in for in January, Henry Onyekuru…

  21. The week before we lost tae the arabs we were sent up tae the pen, Christmas Eve FGS, we tied that game 1-1 but worse than the dropped point was the loss of “side by side with Joe McBride we’ll kick doon derry’s walls”, for almost a year, 364 days exactly, as on his return, December 23, 1967 he scored a hat trick against Morton. Even so he still managed to be the country’s top goalscorer in that glorious season with 36 goals.

However, there was another tragedy either that Saturday or the next when one of our supporters busses, a Clydebank one, might have been the OK CSC, was involved in a MVA. One of the members lost his life, he was a wee porter at Singer’s Station who I would often see when getting off there for Duntiglennan or Clydebank Tech. I can still see him now standing at the top of the stairs collecting tickets.

Definitely an undefeated league campaign for me, what an achievement, not likely to be repeated in most of our lifetimes if any. We’ve already done the treble a couple of times and hopefully will do another one next weekend, but the undefeated league campaign – quite unique brilliant bragging rights probably forever!

  28. From the national broadcaster who some of you still pay to maintain “Jock Stein was told he wouldn’t be promoted at Celtic because he was non-Catholic.”

Now I believe the Big Mhan once said he left because he felt hat his religion may have been holding him back but I never read or heard of the club stating this.

There was another myth out there about nae non-Catholic directors and he would have been the first, hmmm.

John Thomson’s fiancé’s da John Finlay was general manager of Edinburgh Collieries Company Limited. He was a keen Celtic supporter and often took his children to Celtic Park, in 1927 he was invited to become a director of the club.

However, he refused the position because he was a non-Catholic and was an active member of the Church of Christ, a protestant evangelical church, which John was also a member of.

Key phrase here is he refused NOT the club.
