Anchoring to a distant geographical base is not intuitively how you would expect a football club to recruit but Celtic are clearly working their contacts in Israel these days. Beram Kayal has worked out well in the two and a half years since joining from Maccabi Haifa, as has Nigeria international, Efe Ambrose, who joined from Israeli club Ashdod in the summer.
Neil Lennon recently mentioned he needed cover for left back (despite right-footed Adam Matthews performing heroics there against Barcelona), so it is no surprise that Israel international Rami Gershon is in town today. Gershon has played less than a dozen games for Standard Liege since leaving Israel three years ago, although he was a regular pick for loan club Kortrijk. Should he sign he will be a low-risk addition to the squad but he has almost certainly received commendation from the same sources who recommended Kayal and Ambrose.
Best of luck to Rabiu Ibrahim, who left for Kilmarnock after promising much but delivering little as a prodigy at Sporting and PSV Eindhoven. He was the low-risk addition of last January. You’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs……

So,KEV,I gather from that comment that you exercise your right not to contribute to CFC,despite having no geographical problems?
And hopefully no financial problems to the extent that the ST would be beyond you-as it is for many.
So why are you here?
The Hands that do not go in your pocket would be better served by staying away from your laptop,IMO.
Or straying as usual towards your lap…..
Jooooooost saying,like.
Is this 2013?
Are Celtic in the last 16 of the Champions League?
Do we have a good lead at the top of the SPL?
Are we still in both domestic competitions?
I feel like I am reading a blog article from years ago with all this talk that we are a rubbish side that no one wants to go and see.
I really can’t understand some Celtic supporters, I think some people are never happy unless they have something to complain about.
Mort (who is very happy with the team we have, and the position we are in)

How many of the players scoring in the SPL are fouled constantly and are up against 11 players behind the ball? Not saying they are not good enough just that it’s a different game playing for Celtic.
Ntassoolla
Mort attendances are falling.
They are but why is the key question we need to be asking.
Is it because people are put off by the style of football we play?
If so, how does that tally with sold out stadia for Champs League games. Or are there some among the support who are glory hunters and only want to go to “big games”.
Are people more choosy now with when they want to go?
I’d say so. Most know they don’t need a season ticket any more as will get tickets for most games and so do pick and choose what games to see.
Do people have less money now to spend on football?
This recession has been hitting people hard and continues to do so, so there may be quite a number who cannot afford to go every game. I’d love to go every game but from Ireland it costs me almost £200 a go when you add in flights and more often than not an overnight stay.
Or the elephant that no-one really wants to talk about. Do we as a support in general miss Rangers?
I know the vast majority will say No way but overall with there being less competition this season, people may not feel they need to go to as many games and many may only have bought season tickets to guarantee them a seat when Rangers visited.

Agree, someone who has the money to pay, but chooses not to, then kinda gloats mentioning 20 to 30k empty seats.
Really sad.

They ask everyone the same question, if they say they miss them, it will be in the interview, if they say they don’t, they will omit the question and answer. Simples.

The expression that springs to mind is ‘Poverty of expectation’.
Winning the Big Cup was better.
Going to Seville was better.
Being in the last 16 of the Champions League is better.
20 – 30k cant be wrong??? I would say us who are in the majority that go to CP (the other 30k – 40k) and give the club our money are the ones who are right!
Not you who would prefer dipping your hand in your pocket to buy the DR!
When I see your name I think of Jonathon Watsons portrayal of a tim on only an excuse! You’ll say anything for attention.
Absolute clown
Mort,
Stop being so bloody reasonable, where’s the fun in that? The state of the economy is clearly Peter Lawwell’s fault and the wet weather was caused by the Board, sorry bored.
And we should not have lost a game all season, been 20 points ahead in the league and won our Champions League group.

I’m home from Tuesday the 8th-a convivial conversation on the 10th would be a pleasure,as Thursdays need livening up!
Let me know,I’ll organise the escape committee,haha……..
I had a mate in the 80’s and we often went to the football together, he told me once he would rather beat the orcs four times a year than win the the league!!
There’s nothing more to say when faced with that kind of logic..
Give me Euro nights any day of the week over the huns and all their hunnery…

So, 3 – 5 occasions(if ye count WGS’s 2 last 16’s) in our – 125 years – are better than humping the huns establishment etal – 4,5,6 times a season ?
Hmmmm
Kev
you should be aware of the crap that follows the orcs, it isn’t the game in itself it is the whole stench that comes with them..
I prefer to walk home safely…
The common factor in the transfers of Kayal, Ambrose and now Gershon is Israeli scout/agent Dudu Dahan. The latest rumour is of another nigerian defender called Juwon Oshaniwa who plays for Ambrose’ old club FC Ashdod. Read it here-

And here’s another one. A lot of t he current crowd got into season book ownership when the stadium was completed, and like me were in early to mid-20s at the time. Now, like me, they have families.
On 2nd I chose to spend the last day of my holiday with my kids, rather than go to the game. As you say with there’s no need to be a season ticket holder in order to go to all games, and that was true while Rangers were in the SPL.
As it is prior commitments meant that I couldn’t get to 3 games early season and being a ST holder has cost me more than buying tickets to matches I could have gone to would have.
I may not renew.
Everton’s annual report confirms a wage-turnover ratio of nearly 79%.
My Evertonian colleague just told me the main reason was that Everton didn’t feature on Sky enough times last season but that all will be well when the new TV deal kicks in next season.
I said this was like trying to cure a drug-addict by giving him more drugs while complaining that the drug-dealer hadn’t given him as many drugs as the other drug-addicts up till now.
I think he spat in my tea.

I’ll make it my new year’s resolution to make this change to be a bit more controversial.
I might even start picking on fellow posters to liven things up a bit, you speccy b. :-)

Do we have a good lead at the top of the SPL?
Are we still in both domestic competitions?
Mort, its very true what you say that we are still battling away on all fronts and in theory at least could still win 4 trophies. However attendance figures are still falling, (for whatever reason,) I was a home and away guy (not the aussie soap) for well over 20 years, and if I wont make the effort for regular SPL/Cup games I don’t think too many new folk will. So im now speaking as a fullah who often watches the games in the Pub, in my experience, the attendances in the pub are falling too. Attendances at CP have been falling since 2005.
I agree though that signing a new big name centre forward for example wont bring folks flocking back either. I thought about abut going up to CP to watch a game during the festive period there, but was put off by a few factors
£28 ticket / travel costs
Expecting an away side playing with 9 men at the back
Expecting Celtic to huff and puff before finally breaking them down
Baltic weather
Poor atmosphere
Talk of league reconstruction (ie changing the number of team and bugger all else) is futile and only serves to dilute the quality of opposition even further
Its time to be a bit more imaginative to try to bring folk back through the gates
Standing Areas (£15?)
Get a pint at CP although recent events at Dens might work against that idea
Playing during summer time
LC as a two week long KO tournament before the league opens
Although I have no idea how we improve the ambition/quality of the “wee diddy” teams to compete
We are not the first Scottish side to get to the last 16
We are not even the first celtic side to get to the last 16
Eck even got there before with 7 points
But it seems that last 16 is as high as our ambitions go, I guess there are reasons for that.
The fact that 60k fans will turn out for Celtic v Barca midweek at about £35 a skull, while only half that will turn out to see Celtic V St Mirren etc for £28 a skull. It seems to me that the Celtic fans crave higher quality opposition and maybe will pay even more to see that standard, but the current model of fans paying £30ish to see us play the likes of Killie is bust.
starry plough – 15:04 on 4 January, 2013
Used to hear similar when I worked in the TO. At the time when STs were basically sold out, guys would rather see no games, than take a special (with no Rangers) that put them up the queue for a full ST and guaranteed a seat to home Euro games etc.
I could never understand that.
as i thought
Torino .
Big city but accommodation can be hard to get ——– lots of trade fairs/ conferences / business travelers and that winter sports thing mean that many places are booked out.
I normally stay with a mate when I go but I went to a wedding in Torino last summer and stayed in a city centre hotel called Biancamano . It was very good , my memory says it cost 100 euros for a double room and a very good breakfast..
The City Council / Police will impose security restrictions for the Celtic game . That means that many bars etc will be shut .
If you are intending to stay in the city centre —–getting to the game will require you to take the metro and then a shuttle bus to the stadium.
Happy hunting—–
Canamalar,
Should be in Glasgow over the weekend, tho’ not feeling great. Where do you spend your drinking time?
PS sure I posted this already.
