Israeli recruiting anchor

965

Anchoring to a distant geographical base is not intuitively how you would expect a football club to recruit but Celtic are clearly working their contacts in Israel these days.  Beram Kayal has worked out well in the two and a half years since joining from Maccabi Haifa, as has Nigeria international, Efe Ambrose, who joined from Israeli club Ashdod in the summer.

Neil Lennon recently mentioned he needed cover for left back (despite right-footed Adam Matthews performing heroics there against Barcelona), so it is no surprise that Israel international Rami Gershon is in town today.  Gershon has played less than a dozen games for Standard Liege since leaving Israel three years ago, although he was a regular pick for loan club Kortrijk.  Should he sign he will be a low-risk addition to the squad but he has almost certainly received commendation from the same sources who recommended Kayal and Ambrose.

Best of luck to Rabiu Ibrahim, who left for Kilmarnock after promising much but delivering little as a prodigy at Sporting and PSV Eindhoven.  He was the low-risk addition of last January.  You’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs……

Can’t argue with that. I was off an age when just started going over to games when the stadium was renovated. First season I was regular we had the old temporary stand. Back then the club offered us special 10 match tickets to include one game against Rangers. All of us in the supporters club bought one and we even bougha couple extra for guests. We could fill a bus for every home game.

After a couple of years the Rangers game was removed and fewer of our members bought the tickets but as a club we kept up the total number we had and sold spares outside the ground, sometimes for very little. As habits changed fewer and fewer started going to games so it wasn’t worth our while financially to run the bus and so the 3 or 4 of us who were left would take a car over and then later cheap flights.

The need for the season ticket was no longer there as we only went half a dozen times a year and could always pick up a ticket as I got us all memberships of the huddle club (not even sure if that still exists) as this enabled us to get tickets a week before any public sale.

Now-a-days as you say we have all grown up and families have become more important and this is where spare money goes to. I haven’t been over since the end of last season and reckon if I get twice this season I’ll be happy.

With the greatest respect-and I mean that,honestly-beating Rangers was a victory in itself, but meaningless in the great scheme of things if we didn’t win the league.

Losing to them, then winning the league, was similar-great scheme,WIN THE LEAGUE!

BLANTYRE TIM is 100% correct, getting home after a game is paramount. It could never be guaranteed when we played that lot.

There are posters-a-plenty on here to testify to that, and also a fair few tragic tales of people who can’t.

I personally will miss the ativistic pleasure of hammering them, but I will NEVER miss anything else about them, and will never watch us having to face them again.

We are not defined by them,Kev.

Id have let them go bust. thats capitalism.

It would have been cheaper, more painful in the short term but necessary and less painful in the long.

In terms of bank bailouts the only cash invested by the government (wrongly as i state above) has resulted in the creation of an asset on the balance sheet. The loss ie cost to us the tax payer is the deficit in terms of the valuation of said assets now.

It is interesting that in the US – the only country which allowed a bank to fail – they have made substantial profits on thier financial asset investments.

  5. Seeing as we are talking about attendances, I just saw this on twitter (not sure if its true but it is interesting):

“Only Man Utd and Arsenal have had more fans through the gates this season in the UK than Celtic who so far have had 778,453 attend matches”

  10. To be fair on Henrik the Swedes have been hooked ever since they took that first live game featuring him and Johan both.

The Swedish media were not so enthused by that game. At least those in attendance. Our ship swaying in a storm press gantry apparently unnerved them and greatly affected their ability to do their jobs. Bricking it, as one Swedish-Scot told me. This added immensely to the enjoyment of the viewers back home.

  11. I'm Neil Lennon (tamrabam) on

Another point that I feel affected attendances was the situation of the old bus park when fans were held in the bus park for 45 minutes after the game was done.

The change in the away ticketing system, whereby individual ST holders got away game tickets as opposed to buses getting away game tickets, was a nail in the coffin for the supporters buses .

And as mort and weeminger mentioned, the season ticket fan base is aging and perhaps in the days of the waiting list, we alienated a few youngers fans who would normally take their turn but were not able to get/afford season tickets

  20. A.C. Milan player, Kevin-Price Boateng, receives wide-spread support from the football world after leaving the field due to racist chanting.

Any player in Scotland who suffers similar abuse due to their perceived ethnicity or religion, regardless of which division, will surely earn equal plaudits for their bravery if they decided to leave the pitch.

Please bring us a test case ; Boateng has shown us the way.

    as i thought..

Don’t think you would be able to get back to Milan after the game . Last train / bus would have gone by the time you travelled back into Torino Centro after the game…

Lots of good museums etc in Torino . The Egyptian Museum is excellent . Great food etc .

It will be very cold . It could be snowing . Torino is a great place for freezing driving rain..

I am going to the game with a Torino supporting mate . Hope to get Celtic tickets but that is probably unlikely ——- more likely we’ll pay 90 euros to sit in a ” safe ‘ part of the stadium .

I was a season ticket holder for 16 years. Now coming from Belfast for 25+ games a season was very expensive but I had no outlays.

Now, married, 2 kids and a mortgage I can’t afford to go over to more than 5 games a season.

I appreciate those games more than ever!
