Issue 7 of CQN Magazine out now!

Issue 7 of CQN Magazine is out now! We continue our campaigning focus on the crisis in Scottish football from recent weeks as well as delivering many great articles on Celtic.

You can get a glimpse of the magazine below but go to the dedicated magazine site here to read it properly (which you’ll not be able to do below). Nip to page 64 for my favourite article this month, comparing the age of the current Celtic team to some of our great teams from the past. It’s an eye opener.

A special word of thanks to Alex Thomson of Channel 4 News, who this morning got Uefa to confirm: “We are in contact with the Scottish FA and offering assistance”.

We have tons to talk about in the next couple of days, Brian Kennedy, Sailen Manna – don’t let me forget to talk about Sailen, Athletic (one of the most important cup ties in years?), Kenny Shiels (don’t underestimate this guy) and we have a Cup Final to look forward to! Struggling to fit it in but we’ll try.

We are now shipping hard copies of the magazine from the UK – and sold out last month (unlike Rangers tickets last week).  Order your copy by clicking on the link below.  If you want a copy shipped overseas (note, seas, not sees) email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com (for Britain and Ireland please use the link below).

Pay by card or Paypal – We don’t do clowns!

You can support the online edition by making a discretionary donation here.  Thanks to James, Bart, Bobby and David, all of whom are probably still asleep, and everyone who contributed.

The Rangers Trust think this blog and the tax case blog are being run, in the style of the Stasi, by ‘an individual’ at Celtic

    Benfica Vs Chelsea

    Milan Vs Barca

    Chesea/Benfica Vs Milan/barca in Semis

What price an all Spanish final ,perhaps Bayern might thwart this!

It seems most likely that their fans have been bombarding Mr Thomson with their fairy tales about Celtic – I wonder if the leaving the lights on to guide German planes to Glasgow during WW2 one made it in there (total nonsense).

However, behind closed doors none of us really know what goes on.

To state he has heard something is most unlike a journalist – there has to be a developing story there or they don’t comment and he must take heed of the law as you cannot talk about someone based on hearsay and rumour from internet bampots (according to Hugh Keevins).

Mr Thomson asked Rangers fans for their input – and of course they doubtless did what they always do, blame Celtic for their own actions.

I hope that is all this is. I would not like Celtic’s name dragged through the same mud that they operate in.

  9. Oooooooo, could be a Barca/Real final. Think i’d probably watch that.

Chelsea could get Barca in semi, oh i’d love that. Fair to say i’m not too fond of Chelsea.

Re; Alex Thomson’s latest tweet. What’s the panic about??

I thought we all wanted a complete and thorough impartial investigation into all proceedings. If he does that we have nothing to fear.

Legends’ game funds help Oxfam’s appeal

By: Newsroom Staff on 16 Mar, 2012 10:27

CELTIC were born of famine and, to this day, charity is still at the core of the club, and Celtic supporters are never slow to rally to the cause and raise much-needed funds for those who are truly in need.

The Celtic v Manchester United Legends match, held in August earlier this season, raised an incredible £336,345 for Oxfam´s East Africa Appeal and the charity has now provided the club with a breakdown of where that much-needed cash is going.

This money has enabled Oxfam to continue providing clean water, sanitation and food to thousands of people desperately in need.

Prolonged drought, poverty and conflict in the Horn of Africa have led to severe food and water shortages, spiralling food prices and the widespread loss of livestock across parts of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.

The October rains finally arrived, but this brings fresh concerns of flooding, the spread of water-borne diseases and difficulties in reaching rural areas.

In September, the United Nations confirmed famine had spread to a sixth area in Somalia, bringing the total number of people in desperate need of life-saving assistance to more than four million, with 750,000 at risk of dying of starvation in the following four months.

Many families do not have enough food or water to survive, and livestock have died due to lack of pasture, leaving pastoralists with no source of income.

Increased security within camps in Kenya and Somalia is affecting humanitarian access and response.

The money raised in the Celtic Legends match was enough to fund the Oxfam water and sanitation programme for the entire Lower and Middle Jubas in the South West of the country for 12 months.

That means providing more than 66,000 people with essential clean water from Oxfam hand-pumps and from rehabilitated shallow wells.

In addition to all this, the funds also enable Oxfam´s public health teams to conduct house-to-house visits to distribute soap and raise awareness around sanitation and promote good hygiene practices.

Thank you for raising such an incredible amount for Oxfam’s work in East Africa.

Without your support, we would not be able to reach those desperately in need

  15. “Rangers are expected to defend themselves at the hearing by claiming that any wrongdoing and breaches of SFA rules were down to their owner. That could minimise any punishment for the club.”

(From Michael Grant’s piece in The Herald)

Now this defence, if indeed it counts as a defence, leads to two interesting questions that are more than just philosophy: what exactly is a football club and who is responsible for running it?

The idea that the club is somehow not responsible for the actions of its own Board is a strange one. The Board of Directors runs the club on behalf of its shareholders, who elect them. The Directors have responsibility, and possibly liability, for the actions they take.

So what exactly is the club as a corporate entity? To me it is a company run according to its own rules and regulations, governed by the laws of the land and of football. So if its Board, its governing body, takes decisions or carries out actions or inactions that break either the law or football’s rules then the club itself is guilty.

And the huns’ favourite defence – it wasn’t us it was someone else – is a nonsense.

  16. Gordon_J backing Neil Lennon on 16 March, 2012 at 11:19

Gordon, do you know what the possible sanctions are? It seems to me lots of media have covered this, with the Scottish Sun even speculating that Craig Whyte could face a lifetime ban from football (later to be amended to career ban by Gordon Smith, perhaps), but no mention of what the SFA might impose on the club. No one else seems to have asked or thought about this obvious follow-up question.

    Do you know?

  17. Gordon_J

Correct, a football club, especially one that is a Plc is by the letter of the law a legal entity with legal personality and can sue and be sued. The Board of directors are given responsiblity for the day-to-day running of the club.

Also, resigning as a director does not allow you to walk away from problems that occurred while you were a director – you retain responsibility for things you did (and sometimes things that you did not do), or that happened, on your ‘watch’.

For example, if the company subsequently becomes insolvent, the official receiver (or administrator, etc) will look into the conduct of the directors over the previous three years.

  18. Great work on the magazines Paul.

I am going to Whitley Bay for a stag weekend, do any CQNers know of anyTim friendly pubs down there?

If the consortium led by Paul Murray includes Ticketus, does that not mean he is using future sales of RFC(IA) season tickets to fund his bid? Something our hero, the MBB, has been vilified for doing.

I think this is my longest ever CQN post, I might need a wee lie doon now!
