It all goes on the line at Hampden tomorrow

453

Games come thick and fast when you remain in all competitions in late October. The Allianz Arena got your heart beating on Wednesday, but much more is on the line at Hampden Park tomorrow: the first trophy of the season.

While our unbeaten domestic run goes on the line every game we play in Scotland, I wish we were not facing an occasion as important as a cup semi-final immediately after such a huge Champions League occasion. The timing of this game contributes towards Hibernian’s chances of success.

Neil Lennon’s Hibs have already won at Ibrox and drawn at Celtic Park this season. They genuinely have no fears about making the trip along the M8 to face Celtic at the national stadium. While Celtic players were draining every muscle of energy on Wednesday, Hibs players were resting in front of the television. They would have been tucked up in bed before Scott Brown and his team-mates got to Munich Airport and have enjoyed the benefit of a week’s uninterrupted training.

For Brendan Rodgers, the challenge is to pick a team with sufficient energy and ability to ensure a cup final appearance next month. He is able to make changes, which I expect to happen.

Moussa Dembele and Tom Rogic should start. Callum McGregor enjoys the Hamden stage and I would give him the nod ahead of Olivier Ntcham or Stuart Armstrong in the central mid berth, although Brendan will think otherwise.

We are the champions and treble winners for a reason: that we have unerringly raised our standards to meet every challenge presented. Tomorrow is another occasion when our deep reserved will be called upon.

Enjoy your day at Hampden.

  3. Without wanting to re-open old wounds …

Not on the site as often as I have been in the past so it would appear that I have missed some “street theatre”.

Huffs, bans, walkout, toys and prams …

    The usual interweb nonsense.

    Was amortisation involved?

    I would hope so.

Anyone care to spill the beans?

    I like that team !!!

But I think you have only 10 players listed

Maybe you had a case of “premature team sheet printing “…which in the circumstances is understandable

My interpretation is that Brendan Rodgers has a long term plan. He doesn’t speak in code, listening to him I thought his pre-match interview was far more insightful than post match. He told the players to go out and play in his style so they can learn the level they need to be at for that style of play to be competitive at this level. He was prepared to lose and if you are going to lose then the choice is really what is the best lesson to learn. He feels that he is in year 2 of a journey that will stretch years ahead (his words, not my interpretation) and that the players need to play their game and learn the level that they need to achieve to get close to Pot 1 and Pot 2 teams.

I totally get the argument that we should have adapted to recognise our limitations, park the bus perhaps, play the odds on a stoic draw etc. In fact I am not even going to argue that it isn’t just as valid. But if all goes well and we drop into the UEFA will we be in a better position to go away from home to a Europa League standard team with the lesson we got from Wednesday, would we be planning to park the bus every time we go away, or would we be playing our own game away from home in Europe for the first time.

He’s decided to take the defeat playing our own game, taking the longer term view that this is the greater lesson to learn.

What I find lamentable in the media coverage is any ability to analyse the choices that were available and debate them like adults. It’s actually a cracking talking point for folk genuinely interested in dissecting it with mates over a beer or a coffee or whatever. We just get hardened positions and everyone else is wrong, it’s pathetic.

Honestly speaking I find that openness against the big teams sore to take, it hurts your pride but I’m prepared to accept that Brendan’s position is more learned than mine and if it’s about the long game I look forward to it immensely. If 0-5 to PSG it’s what it takes to have the balls to go to Brussels and win 3-0 it’s a new era of highs and lows in a new era of elite football.

And I think we’ll win at Celtic Park v Bayern. 3-2. A real classic.

    WITS …

ha! obviously I was a bit distracted!

as for the ‘premature printing’, I am sure I read somewhere that I can take a little GREEN pill for that these days…

    :)

  15. Felt before the game started on Wednesday that Paddy Roberts might prove to be something of a luxury for such an occasion.

Thought JF offered more, and a good stint, and deserves a more prominent role tomorrow.

I thought that most of our defensive challenges actually started in midfield where we afforded Bayern too much time and space, especially the latter.

I’m not advocating a bus being parked. I actually think it could and should have been driven a bit better, albeit in chasing a Porsche!

    Stop McGinn, stop Hibs.

Then buy him and start grooming him to try to replace the near irreplaceable no8.

Sorry for delay in responding to your post.

Can’t be sure whether it’s the teaching (coaches) or the learning (players) that’s to blame.

Shouldn’t be beyond the management team to figure out what needs fixed though. Brendan kept on JK and brought in KT so he obviously values them as defensive coaches.

  19. Noticed that Cork are 4/1 away to ST Pat’s tonight, I know they wrapped up the league the other day, but FFS, Pat’s are brutal this season, seems to good to be true, but as ever, what do I know.
