It always stings a bit when we lose a good one, and there appears to be universal agreement that Victor Wanyama is a good one, but there are compensations. We lost him for the asking price (a club and Scottish record) and lost him early enough in the transfer window for the cash to be put to good use. Technical note, £12.5m and freeing up a very small wage will not provide £12.5m for transfers plus wages for either a £12.5m player or a collection of players at that value. It will free up a lesser transfer budget and provide a higher wage budget.
Victor goes with our best wishes. He joins a club who signed Celtic fringe player (I’m being generous), Jos Hooiveld, two years ago, and who also employ former Celtic misfit, Danny Fox. It’s not a sexy move but Victor will be as well compensated as Celtic by England’s bling. There could be claims about the move being about football, but it’s about the money, honey; not that there’s a problem with that, Victor didn’t pack his bags in Nairobi hoping to end his days in Glasgow.
He only became a first choice player after Beram Kayal was injured so comprehensively by Elbows McCulloch and played less than 30 games and was a first team choice for less than a year before declining a contract extension for a substantial wage increase (several times the wages he was on). This, when he had almost three years left on his existing deal. There’s a lesson there for future negotiations.
If you are feeling less than happy about this development, I could suggest a reason or two. Back in the 70s and 80s Macari, Hay, Dalglish, Nicholas and McClair were sold for competitive fees but the Cavalry of reinforcements didn’t arrive. Instead Celtic hoped a new generation of youths would fill the gap. Those of us from that generation were condition by the experience.
Things worked differently when Jock Brown was in charge (aye, you read right). Within a few months we lost the league for the ninth consecutive season and sold the Three Amigos for a substantial amount of money. In August 1997 I was distraught but 10 months later the penny dropped. The challenge now for Peter Lawwell, Neil Lennon and the Celtic scouts is to outperform Jock and Wim………….
Easy, right?

Neganon:
We might not like it too much, but as we kid ourselves on that we are contenders on the European stage, the reality is – at best – we are organ farmers – and to stay top of our own wee pile we don’t donate the organs we have nurtured, we sell them for the best price we can get just so we can stay top of our own wee, parochial pile; and if we can’t nurture them ourselves, we’ll make sure we weaken any viable competition by buying their lamb and prime, and forever we will beat the likes of Hibs and Dundee United and Aberdeen into submission and complete and utter boredom. (Something inside me tells me that just isn’t right)
Commercialism has corrupted the whole game, from the very top down. Now we can accept that and play on, cap in hand… because I personally can see no ceiling above ‘poor contender status’ (what with one rule for one association and another rule for another) but we’ll still romp the league, again and again,or we can look for alternatives to fill our lives and feed our souls.
If we don’t accept the latter we can go on bleating about how we just aren’t a big club in Europe, like Hibs Supporters do, only taking the domestic competition into consideration, just like Aberdeen Supporters do, like any clubs supporters do, but the difference between us and them – well they support their chosen club win, lose or draw, their whole seasons realistic ambition is to just get a result against Celtic, and if it does not happen… then there is always next year and next week against ICT and maybe they’ll get a point or three from that. Or the game in Scotland becomes so obvious from seasons end to season start who the winners will be and all the other teams supporters that Celtic play against just get quickly sick and tired of the monotony, they just drif away and with them too goes all interest and the sponsors.
What am I saying? I’m saying we have got to stop kidding ourselves about how great we are… because when it comes to results, we are pretty ordinary; ALL things considered. We have got to start putting our national game ahead of our own vainglories or we will….
We need other teams in our league to be competitive otherwise any glory is not tainted, it is just cheap, and boring.
Uruguay and France under 20 cup final tomorrow.
Uruguay got another crop coming through.
Wonder if JP and celtic scouts have been busy out there. Some tidy players. Been impressed with the Uruguay squad.
Good luck to Big Victor I hope the move works out for him, apart from being a good footballer he always came across as a really nice guy.
Players come and Players go, the Club and her Supporters will always be here with our unbroken history.
Onwards and upwards Berlin is calling.
Hail Hail

Interesting slant on the biggest transfer deal in Britain this year, and easily the biggest in Scotland ever.
Cynical Celtic fan that I am, I reckon we spent ‘the Wanyama money’ before we got it, with
£100 off your ticket, improvements at Celtic Park, Amido Balde, Virgil Van Dijk, plus a contract for Steven Mouyokolo, and an improved deal for Tony Stokes.
That’s all folks CSC
p.s. enjoy the summer only six weeks till the window shuts.
Sevcomedy fingers on the pulse:
“Duff or Phelps Responsible?
Can anyone tell me if any of these 2 clowns are still being investigated? Over the past year, more and more has come out the wash and I believe as many of my fellow bears do, that these 2 have dirty hands. Not seen anything in the media recently. Have they been cleared? I’ve heard Duff was the ring leader, but again this could be speculation. Still doesn’t sit right with me the way they handled things. ”
——
“They 2 guys that were in charge of the Admin process were Duff & Pheps.”
——
“Missing the point completely, these 2 have got away with things and it should be investigated. They had involvement with google eyes and everyone seems to have missed it”
——
“So you are trying to say that Duff and Phelps had nothing to do with the Admin process? and shouldn’t be investigated? Is that right? “
Happy £12m day!
What a great player
And what a great deal.
Still expect my prediction from early in the season to happen VW will move for £20m+ one day. So even Southampton have got a bargain.
So that’s £18m from the Premiership in twelve months plus all that CL revenue. WE are doing well.
Happy birthday to all our buffday bhoys
King Kenny Consolation
Who’s Viictor ?????

England 157/4. Lunch
In response to Celtic First commenting ‘Paul’s point was that guys who haven’t made it at Celtic have been first-picks for Southampton. Artur doesn’t come into that category.’
Check your facts mate, Boruc is first choice keeper, Fox wasn’t even first choice in the Championship!! Hoiveld only in due to injuries, no chance of first choice since signing Lovren.
Good ones by the very nature of things are rare so everybody wants one and those with the most disposable sheckles, even if they are not their own, will always attract those who suggest they will be good ones.
In Scotland Celtic enjoy being the top of the wage competitive league and so we come top of the Scottish league.
We all know that so why do we expect a different dynamic to take over in a UK or European context?
Being Celtic means nothing to other clubs or players in a wage driven environment.
We can only do what we can to minimise the advantage wages give to other clubs and that tales a lot of hard work just to stand still.
Ole Pattinson on fire
“Would like to wish Victor Wanyama the best in his future..he was a wonderful player for Celtic”
Neil Lennon
knibbsy
You read me wrong. The main point was they were not deemed to be players with much of a future at Celtic, whereas Artur was.
I still think thomthetim nailed it
Vic has a strategy he is working to
Gradually work his way up the ladder
He got a great start in Belgium
Celtic allowed him to step up one more level
I think Southampton is his next level were he will be playing in a more competitive competition week in week out.
If he continues to improve at the rate he has, the next step will be the final stage in his development, in with the big boys and a real crack at a CL trophy.
And good luck to him, I think the more money jibe was a cheap shot that should have been aimed at his agent rather than the boy himself.

Just arrived in Scotland and seen your message this morning. Thanks. I should have a runner on the 23rd in a mares only hurdle at Southwell.
She’s running well at home but just not seeing it through at the death. We had her scoped, and she was clear, but the vet thinks he knows whats wrong, and rather than bore ya with the detail, a tongue tie should do the trick. Will keep the blog informed on her chances.
Sky are linking Celtic, QPR and West Ham for a move for Malagas Javier Saviola.
I do agree with 70% of what you say Paul. But I do thing out CEO bonus should be split 50/50 to balance sheet and success. While you might be jumping up and down on last seasons football results. The previous 5 seasons have been poor we should be competing in CL during those years but were blindfolded on the park as too much concentration was put on balance sheet
Yes indeed we do not want our club being a pawn of the bank, but we all want to see success on the field of play
KPI of balance sheet of Pl over last 5 years 95% attainment
On the park 40%
We need a better balance
Looking forward to tonight’s game. Last night I had a Manhattan, tonight I’ll take Berlin.
Great keeping up with the news on here.

Greetings from a very warm, overcast and humid Granada.
Times change. The morning Paddy Crerand ( a near neighbour of mine on Crown Street, Gorbals )signed for Manchester United – he left Celtic- I was distraught. I knew of the rumours after his half time dressing room bust up at Ibrox but I hoped he wouldn’t go- but go he did. He left his and my beloved Celtic. Nothing would ever be the same again. Within a few short years I was standing on the pitch in Lisbon watching his pal, big Billy, lift the European Cup. Would Paddy have made the team, possibly, but we found replacements.
Now in different times Celtic have to find a way to survive and prosper and accept that players will gravitate to higher earnings and perceived glamorous leagues. I don’t believe Scottish football is for fixing, at least not in my lifetime, so we need to get used to the idea that players will come, make an impact and go. That is a tough call for us who are just fans. Yet we are more than that. We are the custodians of a very special club and it requires our unyielding support as we navigate to other different times- times yet to become clear.
Victor leaves with my blessing, and regrets. No feelings like the morning my Mum woke me and advised that Paddy had gone but still a lot of sadness that we do not compete on a level playing field.
When we do ………. there will be no holding Celtic.
Saviola is on a free transfer. Says next move not about finances.
To Los Diddyteams von Ecosse the League Cup is to the Ramsden’s Cup as the Champions League is to the Europa Cup for serious football teams.
Once again wee Charlize Theron will be nowhere near this afternoon’s draw, as she has ‘millions of better things’ to do.
The last time we were linked with Saviola and he went to Monaco on loan from Barca, he quickly regretted it and told the Spanish media, “I should have gone to Celtic.”
I think we might be in the driving seat on this one.
Paul67 et al
Don’t forget this is a club who tried to sell Jimmy McGrory to Arsenal, and succeeded in selling Willie Buchan to Blackpool for what was also a record fee between a Scottish and an English club back in 1937. And only recently did I discover the circumstances that led Willie Wallace, amongst others, to leaving Celtic. Hay and Macari were Scottish Internationalists and knew how much players earned down South, because Billy Bremner told them. Dalglish would have left in 1975, had it not been for the debt he owed Sean Fallon. Football debt that is, we are not talking Lou Macari here. In selling Victor to the Saints, we have at least upped the ante, and as others have pointed out, made it clear that if you do well at Celtic, or even at Hamilton Accies, there could be a well paid future just across the border. It works both ways.

Very good, the Leonard Cohen reference there. Chapeau.
On wee Saviola, we’ll all need to forgive and forget his red card at Celtic Park when we won 1-0 in 2004. This put Barcelona down to nine men.
Saviola to grace the 7 jersey ?
Javier Saviola?
According to Wiki his height is 2.22 metres, or 7 feet 3 1/2 inches!

That must be with his pal standing on his shoulders.

I don’t need Paul to sway my opinion. I know what Celtic are attempting to do and I am comfortable with it. Ajax have been operating this system since the late 70s – and they have won the big cup three times more than Celtic. Maybe they are realistic on their position the general scheme of things though.
I’m not sure what big prizes Celtic are missing out on to be honest. We are light years away from being European Champions again.
We are winning the prizes we have a realistic chance of winning. Getting into the Champions League knockout stages is as good as it is going to get.
Victor goes with all my best wishes and thanks for two fantastic years of service.
The bhoy gave 100% every time he donned the hoops and has left to further his career as I and many others in various jobs have done before.
If we can unearth another in his mould then fantastic, but players like him , KOK, Lubo, etc. are like diamonds in the sand, hard to find.
Anyway, bags packed and off to Santa Ponsa ra morra for a week of r&r with the wife.
Hail Hail
Wanyama Who Is Akbar, no more.
Big Vic – almost worth as much as Torre Andre Flo!
Happy glorious 12th, happy retard bigot day. Tomorrow morning I shall take my place at the kerbside for the local zombie walk and spend the passing of the bloated percussion monkeys with, shades on, my face in a book; it always confuses the bejesus out of those around.
Did it last year (‘Tropic of Cancer’ by Henry Miller; this year ‘The Second Coming by John Niven) while my kids puzzled over the ‘funny musical fat men’ (copyright 6 year-old ‘N’ who can twirl a baton better than them, too) and not a word was said to me. Interesting psychological juxtaposition for the hingers-oan – a reader at a walk. It’s a short-circuit.
My long failing memory seems to recall that we sold King Kenny and also lost danny mcgrain to a season long injury and not too far later were being knocked out the anglo Scottish cup by burnley
this is not to say don’t sell Victor, but just to say there is generally another side to the coin that accompanies the profit from the sale
