It always stings a bit when we lose a good one, and there appears to be universal agreement that Victor Wanyama is a good one, but there are compensations. We lost him for the asking price (a club and Scottish record) and lost him early enough in the transfer window for the cash to be put to good use. Technical note, £12.5m and freeing up a very small wage will not provide £12.5m for transfers plus wages for either a £12.5m player or a collection of players at that value. It will free up a lesser transfer budget and provide a higher wage budget.
Victor goes with our best wishes. He joins a club who signed Celtic fringe player (I’m being generous), Jos Hooiveld, two years ago, and who also employ former Celtic misfit, Danny Fox. It’s not a sexy move but Victor will be as well compensated as Celtic by England’s bling. There could be claims about the move being about football, but it’s about the money, honey; not that there’s a problem with that, Victor didn’t pack his bags in Nairobi hoping to end his days in Glasgow.
He only became a first choice player after Beram Kayal was injured so comprehensively by Elbows McCulloch and played less than 30 games and was a first team choice for less than a year before declining a contract extension for a substantial wage increase (several times the wages he was on). This, when he had almost three years left on his existing deal. There’s a lesson there for future negotiations.
If you are feeling less than happy about this development, I could suggest a reason or two. Back in the 70s and 80s Macari, Hay, Dalglish, Nicholas and McClair were sold for competitive fees but the Cavalry of reinforcements didn’t arrive. Instead Celtic hoped a new generation of youths would fill the gap. Those of us from that generation were condition by the experience.
Things worked differently when Jock Brown was in charge (aye, you read right). Within a few months we lost the league for the ninth consecutive season and sold the Three Amigos for a substantial amount of money. In August 1997 I was distraught but 10 months later the penny dropped. The challenge now for Peter Lawwell, Neil Lennon and the Celtic scouts is to outperform Jock and Wim………….
Easy, right?

Weeron. All those players we have let go have now Salarys that can free up extra funds for those players
Big vic money goes in bank to ensure our zero debt stays intact. Shame
As Wanyama or more correctly his agent refused to sign the extention we were right to snap up the offer from Southampton, although I feel we could have held off and got a bit more as clubs would become ever more desperate.
However I feel the bigger challenge is in moving on those who HAVE accepted an increased wage and show little signs of the form that made such an offer possible. Hence making them much harder to shift for profit. In particular we have both Kayal & Izzy, while I suspect others will similarly fail to reach such heights after gaining financial recognition of their efforts. Look at Stokes in the cup final, superb display but as I expect him to renew for a higher salary will we see similar determination in future seasons ??
It’s a tricky balancing act, although clubs like Porto, Ajax have been hugely successful in doing similar for quite a few years now.
We have sold far superior players to Wanyama and been successful, wether we can unearth another so cheaply / quickly remains to be seen. But we must keep players moving on, both to refresh the squad and provide high levels of competition for those who seek either higher wages within the club or elsewhere.
Also note the lack of support initially provided to Petrov and others when they first arrived which should surely have been attended to by now but seemingly not.
If we want to think big, then we have to act big and ensure all players are adequately taken care of…..we won’t always land lucky with our projects so should be aiming slightly higher each time.
Ole Mark Hately repotedly stated that having 12.5m in the bank is like a new signing.
See this Celtic Strategy thing,
it’s one more than they’ve got in sevconia.

True, – we don’t
But we’re surely not suggesting the move of Vic upsets his financial income
to the extent he’s that ambitious, and he’ll play for marginally better money at Southampton?
It’s all about money and the name Celtic ‘with it’s wonderful wordwide diaspora’ will suddenly disappear out the window, when the suits decide to sell.
Which they did, a long time ago.
From that Twitter.

Forthwith, St Roch’s FC play at James McGrory Park, Royston Road, Glasgow. We hope to announce an official re-opening game soon.

Stein our policy changed in 2003. Still waiting
———-
We’ve sold McGeady, Ki and Wanyama on excellent deals for the club while winning trophies and punching above our weight in Europe last season.
That’s not good enough for you. Each to their own.

I find it strange that saying Vic’s move to Southampton was strange. They were the only ones in for him and provided the first offer, which is usually the best offer to negotiate with. Celtic obviously had a price in mind which may have been in his contract or may not have been, his handlers were the ones who dragged this on not Vic or Celtic.
I wish him well and look forward to seeing hi replacement line up in the hoops

I had a lot of thoughts about Debbie Harry in the late 70s. I never paused to think of her age though.

Except for the money spent on Balde and Van Dyjk. So far……

Did we no make any money from Europe last year then ?
Seems a lot of people are forgetting about the euro cash, what happened to the euro cash if its the Vic money that’s paying for everything ?

Next time Sevconians start bleatin’ on about ‘being punished’, here’s a sobering tale from the BBC:
‘Thurrock’s relegation for fielding a player who had not paid a £16 fine has been confirmed after the Football Association rejected their appeal.
Their three-point deduction relegates them to Isthmian Division One North.
Joel Barnett was banned, having played for a team in Yorkshire that folded with unpaid fines, the cost of which was then spread throughout its staff.
Thurrock owner Tommy South told BBC Essex: “Joel should have told us but he never knew because he was in prison.”
The Fleet managed to secure safety in the Isthmian Premier Division by a single point, only to be told they would be docked three, almost a month after the season had ended.’
Paul
Trying to put context into matters Celtic seems to be a daily challenge for you.
As a club we have always sold some of our best players. We only held on to the likes of Jimmy McGrory & Paul McStay because they personally just refused to leave.
If players want to leave, for whatever reason, then there is no point in having a conflict over the issue. Victor refused a very lucrative contract because he wanted to leave, period. The club accepted this & did the only thing they could, which was to get the best possible deal for Celtic.
Does it show lack of ambition to sell good players? Ask Man Utd that question when they sold Ronaldo or Berbatov or perhaps even Rooney. I sense no lack of ambition from Celtic, merely an acceptance & exploitation of their real place in the football food chain. To continue to compete at a level that the club & the fans expect, our plan involves making a “profit” of 11 million on a developing talent like Victor. Celtic is many things, but it is a real continuum of players, fans, trophies, managers and more.
Consistently challenging in the Champions League is the trade off for “competing” on a lop sided domestic league. The down side of that league is that the television money is woeful. Would we rather have bumper TV money like…well… Southampton or strike a different balance & choose to compete in Europe every season? Players come to Celtic because of the name, the reputation AND the almost guaranteed chance to feature in the Champions League.
We are always evolving as a club & there are hungry & talented players who WANT to come & play for Celtic.
Thanks Victor & good luck. You were a credit to the club on & off the field.

Ha – “It wisnae me Green Brigade – it was ma devious Bank Manager that made me leave”
p.s. what time’s ma plane ? – where’s ma medical? – where do I sign?
If he was a passive ‘saint’ he cannot be a Garngad McGrory with Celtic running through his veins, he wouldn’t sign the massively improved contract Celtic offered, after he’d played two maybe, three great games.
Sorry but with the greatest of respect, he’s a Kenyan national that loved the Celtic, and us him, but only up to a point where any other mercenary footballer *with those money grabbing agents* would.
canamalar1….
Indeed. The thing is, folk tend to ‘ring fence’ money in their minds. All money in and all money out – it all counts.
Regardless of the source of funds, I suspect we’d have made a profit this year, allowing for CL money and a severe drop in attendance.
My hope is that we can get in the Group stages for 4 years in a row, invest wisely, sell strategically.
That way, we will have a club, strong in all areas.

This has to be excuse of the decade.
Not 1 to advertise or promote alcohol but 18tins Stella in morsns tenner.
Javier Saviola, the Argentinian Shaun Maloney. Promised so much for so long but even now in his 30s still fails to deliver.
No need for another striker at the moment unless Hooper or Stokes leave. If one of them does go then we need a young hungry goalscorer, not another Miku, Lassad, Brozek etc, etc, etc….
once we get our highspeed broadband we’ll be able to wander through Italian cyberspace at will.

Kayal,
I think Hooper will go

Celtic released a film charting the year to Lisbon in 1967 which showed the support running on to the pitch. I suppose, rather embarrassingly now, I was the guy who planted a flag on the centre circle, got down on my knees and bowed ( I was a young 19 year old however I did recognise the importance of what had just been achieved ).
I have written on this before but there is a couple George and Betty Shannon from Toryglen who have recently moved into sheltered accommodation in Rutherglen. They took a brand new Super 8mm hand held film recorder on that Lisbon trip and were both on the pitch with me, my late father and my two brothers ( Gordon the historian of this parish ). When I last met them at Old Trafford they talked of their filming which has not been seen by anyone and simply must contain new images of that day- probably even more embarrassing ones of my younger self. Ah, who cares- Celtic had just won the European Cup. I wonder what embarrassing capers CQN contributors might get up to if that was the prize?
bsr,
So he’s a liar then, fair enough.
weeron,
I also like the discussion about the reduced season ticket prices and where that money is coming from, when its very likely that was self financing through increased uptake.
As has been said earlier, it wasn’t that long ago we were being told that all money raised through transfers will go straight back into the team, so I expect we are still using the Ki money from his transfer.
The big omission IMO is what happens to money raised from competition and competing in Europe, that was neve really made clear now was it ?
C1ST- it’ll be Craig Whyte’s fault wee Joel ended up in chokey.
Craig is on the podium when it comes to carryin’ the ole can.

Good friend of mine (who I play Sunday League with) knows the guy. I have just asked him, and here is his reply:
I know him directly … He was born 10 km from my hometown and once we played a friendly match, about 10 years ago…
He is good, last season was the best one in his career and he’s been the best striker in serie B .

So do I but I want us to replace him with someone who will be equally as good just now and develop into a better player over next couple of years. Saviola would be another Miku, Ljungberg type signing and not a player who can improve with us
bsr,
I simply extended your argument, Mat McGlone said Celtic were satisfied Vic was not driving the agenda for a move, you are not.
Form your argument he must be a liar if he does not stay, no ?
So many people seem to hold Ajax up as a benchmark, can somebody actually explain to me why?
Kayal33,
I thought Chris Sutton proved given the opportunity players can redeem their form if they like where they are, if as Saviola like he says is not in it for the money then why not.

Doesn’t matter what the source of funds is. We still have electricity bills to pay.
We need to get off this ring-fencing mentality.

I think they’ve done better in Europe than us with homegrown players and made a right few bob in the process.

I’m sorry that you extended ‘my’ argument an inaccurate choice of word.
Matt McGlone says alot of things some true, – some mince, he is a Celtic fan
with no official connection to the club, much like like Owen Coyle’s Granny.
Nobody forged Victor’s signature for Southampton, otherwise he’d still be here, -unless
a big boy done it and ran away.
Last Word from me on the matter.
