It always stings when we lose a good one

1262

It always stings a bit when we lose a good one, and there appears to be universal agreement that Victor Wanyama is a good one, but there are compensations.  We lost him for the asking price (a club and Scottish record) and lost him early enough in the transfer window for the cash to be put to good use. Technical note, £12.5m and freeing up a very small wage will not provide £12.5m for transfers plus wages for either a £12.5m player or a collection of players at that value. It will free up a lesser transfer budget and provide a higher wage budget.

Victor goes with our best wishes.  He joins a club who signed Celtic fringe player (I’m being generous), Jos Hooiveld, two years ago, and who also employ former Celtic misfit, Danny Fox.  It’s not a sexy move but Victor will be as well compensated as Celtic by England’s bling.  There could be claims about the move being about football, but it’s about the money, honey; not that there’s a problem with that, Victor didn’t pack his bags in Nairobi hoping to end his days in Glasgow.

He only became a first choice player after Beram Kayal was injured so comprehensively by Elbows McCulloch and played less than 30 games and was a first team choice for less than a year before declining a contract extension for a substantial wage increase (several times the wages he was on).  This, when he had almost three years left on his existing deal.  There’s a lesson there for future negotiations.

If you are feeling less than happy about this development, I could suggest a reason or two.  Back in the 70s and 80s Macari, Hay, Dalglish, Nicholas and McClair were sold for competitive fees but the Cavalry of reinforcements didn’t arrive.  Instead Celtic hoped a new generation of youths would fill the gap.  Those of us from that generation were condition by the experience.

Things worked differently when Jock Brown was in charge (aye, you read right).  Within a few months we lost the league for the ninth consecutive season and sold the Three Amigos for a substantial amount of money.  In August 1997 I was distraught but 10 months later the penny dropped.  The challenge now for Peter Lawwell, Neil Lennon and the Celtic scouts is to outperform Jock and Wim………….

Easy, right?

We should blow the £12.5m on Juan Roman Riquelme, c’mon live a little…

  2. Can’t argue with that article, Paul67, except to say that I think we let Victor go too cheaply. He is, imo, one of the best. Whether we can replace him, I very much doubt. Here’s hoping we get through to the Champions League. Imo, it has become just that bit more difficult.

  3. I’ve been out all day (and am shortly off oot again). Can anyone tell me if there has been any trouble in Belfast. Radio Scotland’s resident “expert” there was full of doom and gloom this morning.

That was the way of the world back then, Celtic, like most Scottish (and English clubs) filled the gaps from within their own structures. How many players did Jock Stein actually buy in to win ‘nine in a row’?

Times are changing I know, now instead of having a sing song before the game Celtic have installed a stadium wide Wi-Fi system, is that a good thing? I don’t know if it is good for Celtic but I don’t think it is good for the club as far as atmosphere goes.

I was only ever twice in the Rangers end at Parkhead, once against Hearts and the other for the Hillsbourgh game against Liverpool, most of my growing up was done in the Jungle and then up the Celtic end. For those that can remember, after the game was over if you tried to make your way around the back of the ground at the Celtic end, after the game was over, you didn’t have to worry about the rain because you were under cover; however, you were nimble, and alert, to the cascading urine that poured down on you.

I know I’m talking from a distance but I don’t see how stadium wide Wi-Fi enhances the match-day experience. I’d have thought a gallus Glasgow winger, or a fearless but streetwise midfielder who could see a pass, playing in the first team would enhance the experience all the more. I mean if I want to go on the internet… why leave the house?

Off the top of my head I can’t remember the number of players that Celtic have appealed to government to for a work visa for a targeted player, but it is more than a few. Much more than a few. If my memory serves even Pele himself gave our government a personal reference on Rafael Felipe Scheidt.

    From the Daily Mash

NORTHERN Ireland’s protestants are yet again commemorating a 17th Century battle by poncing around in their bowler hats.

King William and his horse, Ian

The annual Twelfth of July parades see thousands of men marching through the streets, many of them playing dainty flutes that make them look like angry little pixies.

But the parades are set to cause tension for the 323rd year in a row because the protestant dildos like to prance around in front of Catholics who, for some reason, do not find them utterly ridiculous.

Julian Cook, professor of religious wind instruments at Roehampton University, said: “This all goes back to the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 when King William of Orange defeated the Catholic King James II by outplaying him on the recorder.

“The victorious William then took James’s bowler hat and skipped around like a tosspot while waving his orange sash in the air, like some kind of Dutch morris dancer.

“Then they had a massive battle because they had all come a long way and it seemed daft not to.”

Professor Cook added: “And so the protestants commemorate this every year to remind the world that they are mentally ill.”

Bill McKay, an ‘Orange Man’, from Belfast, marches at the front of the parade and bangs a drum as a reward for being the biggest dildo in his street.

He said: “I’m really proud of my heritage so I painted a massive bowler hat on a wall.”

  9. Not many Jimmy McGrory’s in Celtic’s history – probably Billy McNeill, Bobby Lennox and Paul McStay would have made a lot more from the game had they settled for something less than Celtic but a bigger wage in compensation.

Apparently my late father and my brothers are all on the film cavorting on the pitch. My late uncle mistimed the moat jump and was carted off on a stretcher so missed the cup presentation. I have never seen this privately held footage and am a bit too far away from Rutherglen ( prompt to older brother: your job was to track down the sheltered accommodation before the camera and film disappear. The couple have no children ) to pursue. I too would make a large donation- probably to CQN- if we successfully track it down.

Someone mentioned earlier Celtic sell players when they can. Heart of a Lion was another eye opener about Celtic transfers – they happen, and when Willie went to Crystal Palace, – Jock Stein was oblivious and not amused.

Even if Peter Lawell said he was ring-fencing certain funds, he can’t.

Perhaps you could share his quote.

Members of the management team can intend to dedicate a certain budget for player acquisition. Some of these costs are costs outwith the public eye.

Trying to trace certain revenues to certain expenditures is pretty well impossible. Especially when transfer fees and salaries and agent’s cuts and sell-on fees are very often not disclosed publicly.

    But carry on.

Fr Gary Donegan says the statue was quickly removed by community leaders.

A statue of the Virgin Mary that was placed on a bonfire has been handed in to a north Belfast church.

Fr Gary Donegan, rector of Holy Cross Church in the Ardoyne area, welcomed the return of the statue.

It had been placed on a bonfire in the neighbouring loyalist Shankill district.

He said the statue had been removed from the bonfire by community leaders “who did not want to cause offence to ordinary Catholics”.

Bonfires are traditionally lit by loyalists across Northern Ireland on the eve of the 12 July Orange Order parades celebrating the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

Fr Donegan said it appeared that the statue had only been on the bonfire in Lanark Way for 10 minutes before it was removed.

“This incredibly responsible act proves that there are leaders within our communities who remain committed to taking positive steps for peace,”
