It doesn’t look good, Guardian. It doesn’t look good at all

Last week’s advert in the Tribune de Geneve was in English, despite the predominant local language being French. The primary target audience were Uefa representatives and functionaries, who are not drawn from the local Nyon catchment area, and will most likely speak English, with secondary target audiences in the UK. I hear both targets were reached.

There was a short-lived chat about which language to run with in Switzerland, but consensus was quickly reached that English was appropriate and sufficient. No translation was ever made.

Very much related to this subject…….

There was an incident when I was at school (many years ago). Two boys had exactly the same maths homework. This would have been fine had the work been correct, but the made exactly the same mistakes, so the teacher had sufficient proof to establish that he didn’t have two independently produced pieces of work.

The class lesson that day was, if you’re going to coordinate a response, you better get your facts right, or you’ll get caught.

Shortly after the Tribune de Geneve advert ran it was brought to my attention that some regularly-hostile-to-Celtic online loons were running with a line that an English advert had been sent to Switzerland and a French advert had been sent to an English newspaper by mistake.

This was fanciful, but not worthy of attention, because as you now know, there was never a French translation of the advert.

You can imagine my utter astonishment, therefore, that The Guardian claimed they didn’t run the advert because it was submitted to them in French, despite, as surely the world now knows, no French language version of the advert ever existing!

“If you’re going to coordinate a response, get your facts right.” It doesn’t look good, Guardian. It doesn’t look good at all. You’ve been caught in PR vice.

You know how PR works in Scottish football. Celtic and most clubs play with a straight bat: “This is the news relating to our games and events”, but there are clubs, personalities and organisations which are only tenable because of expensive and persuasive PR.

You remember the Poppy banner issue, which became news a full two days after a game, by which time PR could persuade journalists to run with a story which until then had no news value. You are only too familiar with some of the vacuous characters ushered into the game by newspapers demanding Lloyds Bank approve a takeover, while PR spun incredible lies about finance and probity.

The next time Celtic, or their manager, is vulnerable on a subject, look out for this Malign Influence.  It battered Ronny Deila when he lost games, and recently went for Peter Lawwell.

My thanks to The Guardian advertising people, who confirmed to us this morning that the advert they received was in English. That’s the other thing about coordinating a Malign Influence, you need to get buy-in from a lot of people!

you do have a point but I also understand BMCUW and Taurangabhoy.

I see some news outlets are pushing a radicalist agenda but the more balanced ones seem to be of the opinion that this was a very intolerant person. Angry with a very short fuse.

Unfortunately these events are becoming so common that the shock and anger one should feel are now so muted that others might mistake it for apathy.

my thoughts and condolences to all those caught up in this and also to the wider LBGT community who will see this as a personal attack on every one of them

“Homicide rates are now at their lowest levels since recording began; this means fewer victims, fewer families who have suffered the loss of a loved one through violence and fewer communities affected by the aftershocks of a murder.”

Yes,it was. But the initial reports that I referred to would not have made it so.

And that is an example of my whole point-we are inured to,say, six deaths because they are so common. Barely worth comment, sad as it is to type that.

And so sickened by the frequency of such events,so powerless in the face of them, that I genuinely believe most people will have “skimmed” reports on it.

We all condemn such events, mate. But a fat lot of use that is.

I don’t think anyone in their right mind could be anything but shocked and horrified at the outrage in Orlando.

Baciscally just young people enjoying a night out in a club, looking for love, maybe just looking for fun…to be brutally murdered by a madman..

However because its in America when I heard the first reports of a mass shooting I thought…”feckin loony yanks and their bloody guns, when are they going to ban the bloody things.”

So personally I can say that my initial lack of outrage was caused by the fact that it was America …

God help the victims and their families

I don’t sleep great and am usually up with the larks.

I followed the story from the moment it broke on non bbc/itv channels.

I felt as I always do when these story’s break, horror, sadness, helplessness.

I have prayed a number of times since for those who perished and for their devastated families who have to deal with their terrible loss.

I didn’t feel the need to post.

And you and I know it will happen again and probably soon and nothing will be done to prevent further mass murders.

I’m sure the bereaved will feel a lot better after Obama’s words of comfort.

Yep. As somebody said after Sandyhook (and I paraphrase), if they can’t legislate gun control after little kids are slaughtered, they never will.

  8. Charlton Heston famously held a rifle over his head at an NRA convention following the Columbine High School massacre and told gun control advocates they would have to take it “from my cold, dead hands”.

    As ever

  9. I read that there are around 200 million illegal guns on the streets of America. If you make guns illegal, only the “Bad guys”would have them.To say “Ban guns”is all very well, and we would all love to live in a world where they are not a factor, but I am afraid those days are long gone. With illegal arms smuggling it would be impossible.Banning them and paying some lip service to the idea, will not work. The answer?.Who knows.

  10. Just saw the “Hand ball goal”in the Brazil game.Good God,how blatant can it be?.The Linesman flagged it,yet the Ref overuled him.Horrendous decision that I dont think Brazil will let go easilt.

Dreadful events in Orlando, the scale and profanity of which defeat my ability to express my thoughts.

Factually, 50 people were murdered by a guy with a history of mental ill-health, who held deeply prejudiced views, and who worked for G4S as an armed security guard.

I don’t know which is more screwed up: The Killer or the Society he lived in.

Perhaps it wouldn’t end mas shootings, these people after all have an intent to kill, and will find a way.

That said perhaps this guy wouldn’t have had the contacts, or the money(which would be a lot more) to get black market guns. As it was, despite being marked as a person of concern by the FBI, he was legally able to a buy a handgun and an assault rifle.

It was easy for him to carry out this slaughter. It shouldn’t have been.

  17. Moonbeams, first of all may God bless all who died in the shooting in Orlando and also the NI supporter who died in France. These people went out to enjoy themselves and return to families and loved ones.

Lack of comments on CQN about the shooting is,I believe, is where the shooting occurred and not about the victims. Everyone gets sort of immune to shooting in the States that another one does not register as much as elsewhere. I am sure everyone on here feels for the victims and families but until the gun lobby is brought to heel and laws changed in the USA then apathy will continue.
