It takes more than just ability to be a Celtic player

294

Erik Sviatchenko made an instant impact on Celtic’s defensive performances when he arrived in January 2016, six months after the departure of Virgil van Dijk and Jason Denayer.  He was our top central defender for the remainder of Ronny Deila’s tenure and for the first six months of Brendan Rodgers’ time.

Then came a game at Ibrox on Hogmanay 2016.  Celtic were rattled for much of the opening period and Erik looked most out of sorts.  His assured touch was replaced by a need to get rid of the ball early.  Fortunately things turned out well that day but I wondered if the manager’s faith in the defender was shaken.  Some of us doubted his temperament.

The season just ended started badly for Erik as he picked up an injury early in the Champions League qualification rounds.  A loan for former club, Midtjylland, confirmed where he was in Brendan’s plans.

Midtjylland returned most of the money we paid for him and the player is in an environment, and at a level, which suits him.  It takes a lot to be a Celtic player, more than just ability or experience elsewhere.

  1. What about Odsonne Edouard. Rumoured last week to have signed a 4 year deal and then we hear nothing. Similar to the way Tom Rogic signed, only this time a longer gap between report and deal being announced. Has anyone heard any news?

I have heard it rumoured that we are saving “something up” to coincide with the Blessed Steven, father of Lourdes, taking up his appointment as the Manager of the deadybears bears on Friday.

I fully expect tomorrows statement to be delivered by King with a pencil up each nostril, and to consist of one word only.

Maybe if King spoke to his CEO (& SPFL board member) instead of sending him on wild goose chases to speak with players he knows they can’t afford, and perhaps if his PR guru was on top of his brief rather than getting his lapdogs (Jack, Ralston etc) to churn drivel to keep the bigots happy, then he wouldn’t have made a complete dick of himself, again, today.

Would I be upset if the situation were reversed ? If I am being honest, probably would.

MacLennan is a well -known media guy…. which is a good thing in these days of media rights being so important in football …. but, in what other way was he qualified to run a football league

Not sure what happened with Erik. Seemed to start off quite well then quietly disappeared. Wasn’t there a bid from Leicester at one point? Maybe just rumour.

Not too sure about McGinn. Decent enough player right enough, although I think he would be best suited to a 4-3-3 or 3-5-2 system.

  12. BMCUWP it’s almost like life imitating art! As a piece of satire it would have been widely applauded; however, as an actual statement from a Chairman of any company it is astonishing! It is also inaccurate; there was complete disclosure at the time of the appointment!

Delighted to see Dave King demanding transparency.

Presumably this applies to all correspondence between the “same club” and HMRC and the Strong Rangers Association in 2011.

It’s a perfectly normal business practice and in a smallish country like the UK it is no surprise that these guys move about and have interests in multiple companies and fields where there will be overlap. If we look at the business interests of all those involved in Scottish football then we will surely see a web that links senior businessmen with football clubs.

I don’t see the problem; we have lived with “Rangers Men” from the business world and football world running the game for more than a century.

Delaney’s , two former St Peter the Apostle pupils in Celtic’s first team squad , would be very aggreable to you. I have finally stopped calling it St Columba’s.

If we did sign John, I think in time he would be a replacement for Stuart Armstrong. John like Stuart likes to run with the ball but is not as good a goalscorer as Stuart plus Stuart can use each foot comfortably . I’m sure those two issues would be rectified with better coaching.

Time for Celtic to go for the Carotid Artery and and demand action on decades of cheating. Demand a judicial review and insist on stripping of ‘honours’ that were acquired by cheating.

Also demand that the SFA investigate the suitability of having Glibby at the helm of any Club – though I’m quite happy the lying tosser is at sevco.

Totally agree. Years of us ‘keeping our powder dry’ and ‘playing the long game’. Why bother? There’s a constant barage of propaganda drivel emanating from a convicted criminal. Getting beyond a joke now

  23. Erik Sviatchenko leaves with the ole Teuchters best wishes.

  24. Things seemingly very bad at Sevco Rangers at the moment. There seems to be a lot of straws being clutched…

Another Scottish Football executive being targeted for the most dubious of Celtic connections.

The thing for me is once again the SMSM letting themselves, our sport and our country down by giving credence to this nonsense.

This is the same media who ignored the complicity of the “heavily conflicted” Campbell Ogilvie and who also ignored the whistle blowing of ex-Rangers Director Hugh Adams.

While Scotland’s Football Reporters were ignoring these things, it was up to an English Channel 4 Journalist, who had the small matter of reporting on a major war in the middle-east, to do their job for them.

Now Murdoch MacLennan, who has no conflict of interest issues, has no non-disclosure issues is at the heart of a media witch hunt.

    Absolutely deplorable.

It seems like Dave King and his PR cronies are behind this abhorrent attack. This convicted criminal, who runs Sevco Rangers despite failing football’s fit and proper test has the audacity to tarnished another man’s reputation without any grounds whatsoever.

Stewart Regan was a disaster for Scottish Football and his rancid legacy continues to pollute our National Game.

As for Celtic Supporters who suggest we should get involved in this Old Firm Sleaze…

    Why would we??

Do Sevco Rangers look good to you??
